“Investment group”...aren’t these types of organisation typically interested in skimming profits rather than sustainability? And how profitable is an English club ever likely to be

Actually, providing the owners don't somehow piss it all up against a wall, Premier League clubs can be very profitable. With strong broadcast revenues and Financial Fair Play rules keeping wages in check to a degree, England's top-flight clubs also posted a record operating profit -- total revenues minus wages and other costs, apart from transfer fees, - of £1 billion, double the figure for the previous season.

Even Burnley have proven to be consistently profitable, albeit at low levels:

Burnley Football Club announce a net profit for the third-successive season

The club’s annual accounts for Burnley FC Holdings Ltd show a surplus of £4.3m (£5m pre-tax) after Sean Dyche’s side secured a fourth successive season of top-flight football for the first time in almost half a century.

That figure is down on the record profit of £36.6m (£45m pre-tax) recorded for the previous 12 months,

Wasn't it QPR who were the only club in recent years to show a loss whilst in the PL?
