A typical first day cricket in the sub-continent.

Anderson just defies logic! His figures today just amazing.

SL made batting look easy towards the later part of their innings.

So weve been 2 down for nowt in all 3 innings so far - doesnt bode well for India. Sibley is a huge concern for me - personally would drop him for Burns as he looks like he has no idea against spin in sub continent

Even if he had an idea I can't see how his technique will keep out a good left arm spinner.

Those two openers can’t handle spin. Shame. Loads to learn for them.....

Root (now on 50) and Bairstow have that experience and are showing it.

Superb bowling by Anderson. Incredible by a seamer on this pitch.

Our spinners, like our openers, lack the guile on these pitches. SL’s Embuldeniya is proving it.

Decision to rest Bairstow for the first two tests in India looking ridiculous now. As Nasser Hussain said on commentary, at least start the series with your strongest side and then if players are struggling then give them a break.

Test cricket
A marvellous effort that by Johnny and Rooty. Made it look like a different game compared with the Crawley&Sibley shambles.
Gutted that this is the last we'll see of cricket on conventionally available channels for the foreseeable. Oliver Dowden MP cough up please to get India vs England&Wales on BBC :sorted:
Arise Sir Jim!

Yep. Lost his England contract - probably deserved - but, in this series, has proved his worth in SL. Those picked in front of him have to prove their worth now.

Good to see Root jump above Boycott in the England all time batting list!! 😁

Root has Pietersen and Gower in his sights, on the all time leading run scorers list.

What a great email from a legend of the game. Loved watching Dravid play spin.

Equally, they can watch Root play spin and take advice from him. Makes it look so easy.
Agreed, that was a brilliant innings from Root and should get another hundred tomorrow. Root vs Ashwin will be a great contest.

Pretty cool that he went out of his way to give extensive advice to a contemporaneous rival from an opposing team. Has that ever happened in footyball???

Excellent response by Root and Bairstow but you cant help feeling that an early wicket tomorrow will result in a big lead for Sri Lanka. Serious issues with the opening pair against spin heading into the toughest series around right now.

Can we clone Jimmy please - what a miss he will be in the coming years when he retires.

Really was a fascinating insight reading that from Dravid. I loved the advice playing spin in the nets without pads.

Ah....4 down now, Lawrence gone for 3. Reckon Sri Lanka will get a 150 run lead and try and bowl us out on the final day

Great start for SL, with two early wickets for Embuldeniya, who has all four wickets, but has also bowled three no balls, which is criminal for a spinner.

Another 43 to avoid the follow on.

We really are pretty lucky to have Root, Anderson and Broad all playing in the same era, 3 very special players.

Lose Curran last ball before tea - 252-6. Need to grind it out as new ball taken and turning sharply

Root goes passed KP in the all-time Test run scoring list, and is closing in on Gower.

Im not a fan of his bowling but Bess has done great job supporting Root and helping close the gap considerably on the SL first innings score

Next target 198* for average restoration to where it belongs.
Unbelievable to score that many runs at that average. I don’t think any major England batsman has in the last 50 years?

Umpires looking at the light, and have told SL "if you use a fast bowler we will suspend play"

We go on

Just read on the sky sports update app that Joe Root has been on the field for 93% of this test series.

Damn. Wood now gone.

Embuldeniya is a special bowler on these wickets.
