For the life of me I can't understand how he starts.
Frank is the man that picks the side, Canos needs taking out of the picture for a couple of months. Our head coach is doing him no favours at all.

Yep- really showed up how much pace he seems to have lost since the injury. Looked like he was running in treacle.
That is the issue, post injury worryingly just not the same player, no spark, confidence gone.

I feel desperately sad and sorry to watch Sergi clearly struggling from being the player he was now become a former shadow of himself, TF is doing him and the team no favors at all by continually playing him, if this carries on it could destroy him long term, perhaps back down to basics with a few games with the B team to keep him fit and regain his confidence, because that's whats missing from his game, he's a good bright lad, and I would hate to see him go downhill.

Dreadful performance from a player who has been very poor overall this season. I would rather have Dom Thompson our there currently tbh, at least we might get a couple of crosses into the box (and no I don’t really want DT playing left wing either but it shows how bad the situation is with Sergi at the moment)
I'd give Joe Adams from the B team a run! The thing with Sergi is he is a victim of the disastrous changes to the rules about loaning players. If this was 5-6 years ago, we could've sent him out for a month to get some confidence back at a lower level.

At one point he got into a great position on the left he took it to the byline, he puts his foot on the ball before crossing it. That gave the defender enough time to be so close he had almost no chance of avoiding the block. Why oh why, just cross it. I dont care what would have happened, we may have had nobody about to run onto it but having got there for once in the last 6 games or so just cross it. Nothing to lose, he cant let fear stop him from playing.

Pretty painful to watch. He’s an emotional guy and the battering he gets on Twitter every week from the mob of morons can’t be helping.

He needs taking out of the firing line but I’m not sure Fosu will be much better.

I do wonder if we should just play Canos on the right and Mbuemo on the left. It’s not like we’re getting any joy from them cutting in.

Really horrible to watch him at the moment.

He was such a crowd favourite, we loved him and he loved us.

Needsa taking out of the firing line, as others have said.

Hopefully a break will do him some good, as I would love to see a fully firing Sergi again.

Agree it's awful watching the lads lack of confidence in his own ability at the moment. He's not playing his natural game at all, an instinctive attacking player at his best he seems shackled and hesitant at the moment. You do begin to wonder if the vitriol poured out on twitter as well is getting to him, he can't be unaware of it. I do think that maybe a rest will benefit him or a different role in a changed formation. He desperately want to do well but needs to find his smile and love for the game again and TF needs to help him find that.

That is a big part of the problem. Neither of them seem capable atm of beating a man on the outside. Teams just double up on them especially on BM who cant use his right foot. Put them on their natural wing to give them some confidence.

Tough times for young Sergi. It's obvious what TF should do in the very short term, but the longer term looks pretty worrying. He never had trickery or guile like Saïd, it was just one-dimensional "head down and go" and now that he's lost the pace it's hard to see where he does go. He doesn't have the tactical brain to move into midfield, ditto full back (in spades because of the pace issue). Maybe the best thing we could do is send him off for a month or two's speed/sprint training to see what can be salvaged, but obviously that won't happen. Longer term, centre forward at a lower level/overseas? Must admit I woke up feeling quite sorry for the lad.

We do needs some pace in the wide areas in Jan. The only player capable of beating a man and drifting passed players with the ball is Dasilva. Mbeumo has been sussed and full backs just show him on his right. And Canos well he looks like he's running in wellies slow and very predictable. I'd like to see Fosu given a run of games and then we will make a better judgement with him.

re work him as a right back IMO. lost his pace for a winger. Could do a job as RB.

He cannot defend as a wide/midfield player let alone as a right back or wing back.

I would just like to add that Canos is not the only reason we are not firing, too many players are off the boil and the confidence seems shot.

A pretty big reason though.

The most potent left side in the division and our main attacking threat has been replaced by someone who not only is not scoring or making goals but his looseness in possession is making the best attacking left back in the division reluctant to bomb forward as much as he used to. Its a massive problem.

In that case its down to Thomas to drop him, been reading about his performances for weeks. The manager need to act.

Terrible again and can't keep making excuses for him. He just should not be starting at the minute. Out Forss there anyone but it is pointless playing Sergi there. Offers little support to Rico in defence, no option as an out ball, always wants the ball over the top but hasn't got the pace to beat the defender. When the ball is worked out to him he either dithers and wastes the opportunity or just makes a complete hash of it.

Hate to say it I think he is a bit of a stupid footballer in that he lacks the ability to see what the easy option is. Tries to flick it over defenders when a simple pass back or lay off is the right option.

Cant even agree playing him on the right is the correct option as with him and Daslagaard on the same side the distribution would be shocking and every attack would just break down or end up with us just giving the other team the ball back

To those saying the battering he is getting onTwitter is destroying his confidence - read this thread.

To be fair, most negative posts on here have been with a heavy heart and with some respect and concern for a good person going through a tough time.
He’s not playing well and TF needs to find a solution that’s good for BFC but also doesn’t destroy Sergi. Not easy.

If he's lost his pace permanently post injury then I fear for his future career prospects. Any amount of B team games won't resolve anything it would just be a case of him failing at a lower level. Very worrying for the lad.

Not sure he has lost his pace to be honest more his confidence it seems to me which stops him taking on players and has affected his composure. He had a decent game a few games back so maybe not all his lost. He would be less under pressure coming off the bench so maybe that is what he needs for the immediate future to get back the Sergi we know.

I'm going to be blunt, despite the fact that Sergi had some credit in the bank, and state he's not contributing in any shape nor form and should be nowhere near the starting 11.

No excuses, this is the harsh reality of professional football. At present we are playing with 10 men from the start.

Our performance levels are not good enough overall at present, but Sergi is so out of form that Thomas cannot justify starting him, and IMO even bringing him on as a sub.

Fixing the left wing will be a big step to solving one of a couple of issues right now. Ghoddos or Fosu have to start.

What options do you think he has available to him?
Get someone in from the b team, from what i am reading on here, he is a nightmare. And you could also switch Bryan over. Surely, there is something that can be done with our personel, switch Bryan over to the left. If Canos is as bad as most are saying on here, and should not even be in the squad, not my words but he needs protecting as it is doing him no good at all. What do you suggest keep playing him, let his confidence drain away completely, and get more sh*t on here?

I was asking for your options on the basis that Canós is dropped, so they are: get someone from the B Team (but I have no idea if there is a suitable player there) or move Mbeumo to the left without an option on the right. I agree that Sergi should not start but, myself, I can't see what options Frank has.

He looks like a hard grafter from league 2. The saddest part about it is there’s been no glimpses of light to suggest that he’s going to turn it around, at all. I don’t believe he’s played well all season, that’s the harsh reality.

We were so spoilt last season and to see the level of performance at this moment, you can’t help but feel that Canos is one of the biggest issues. I’ve read comments above saying “what are the alternatives?”, well the alternative at this moment quite frankly is anything or anyone else, it doesn’t get much worse. Forss wide, Marcondes wide, Fosu, Stevens as a forward, I don’t mind anything just give the lad a rest and get him out of the firing line. We’re living in a time right now where players stock goes up whilst they’re NOT playing, and maybe that would help him here too.

Feels dirty saying this because everyone loves him at the football club, as a person and a professional, but I’m stunned at the level of performance, which is only exaggerated by him playing in the position of the leagues best player last season. Poor fella!

Sorry I genuinely feel that some of the views are here are a long way wide of the mark. Canos wasn't even the worst Bees player yesterday.

Short of confidence and form I agree with and I do think Frank should take him out of the firing line. Canos is completely a confidence player and he has none at the moment, he is an instinctive attacker who at his best can be creative, yesterday he was hesitant and apart from a couple of glimpses of the old Sergi was often out muscled and lost possession too easily. He started the season well without ever hitting the heights and as the Twitter criticism has mounted and his confidence further eroded we have seen a decline in his performances especially over the last 3-4 matches.

Yet for all this he has been nowhere near as bad as some have opined on here, it feels like he is a convenient scapegoat for some pretty average team performances lately, maybe it's the post Benrahma legacy & an unfavourable comparison. For those suggesting his poor form is neutering Rico's forays forward I would respectfully suggest you look at Dalsgaard and Mbeumo's performances on the right as being more of an issue. Canos has certainly given Rico more cover than Mbeumo has Dalsgaard in my opinion.

He's still a youngish player struggling for form and confidence following a lengthy lay-off. He's always been inconsistent and maybe hasn't developed as many would have hoped but a series of niggling and bad injuries and lack of confidence have all taken their toll. However the level of opprobrium aimed at him on Twitter and even some of those on here writing him off completely doesn't sit easily with me.

I hope Frank takes him to one side and gets him to work on his game on the training pitch and B team and gives him the support and confidence to find the joie de vivre in his game and that he comes back the player we know he has the potential to be. I really hope some of his more vociferous and strident critics on this thread have the good grace to eat their words.

That’s the thing mate, we all want to eat our words... in fact we’re dying to eat our words 😂.
I certainly think your response is more fair than mine and probably the ones above, but it’s part and parcel of the game, and his performances this season have been very poor, there’s no glossing over that.
Btw I personally hate the scapegoat thing, Marcondes, Bryan, Henrik and even Pontus have copped it all this season due to poor performances. No ones scapegoating him whatsoever, but calling it as they see it. I’m certainly with you though, I’d love to eat my words.

It's nothing to do with being fair and I disagree that he has been particularly poor this season either. I think he started the season relatively well but his form has dipped significantly of late - a significant difference of opinion from your viewpoint but I can live with it.

I also disagree that he hasn't been a scapegoat, go and read some of the abuse he's suffered on Twitter and tell me that's not scapegoating. However I'm not a great fan of slagging any Brentford players off full stop as I'm sure you aren't. Constructive criticism and debate is fine what Canos has suffered is certainly not that.

The one point that we certainly do agree on is that we both hope you are made to eat your words;)

I think we've been watching 2 different players, but agree to disagree and I also do not like to any abuse he's been getting on twitter, that's deplorable. :sorted:

even in his most productive season his best goal return was 7 so he's never going to be a Benrahma replacement.I think he's a decent squad player but nothing more.

His best performances have often come off the bench and that maybe is the best place for him currently. Agree he needs to be taken out of the firing line for a bit.

We desperately miss the spark Said gave us. We just don’t look dangerous or likely to score unless Toney puts away one of his chances.

Norgaard back allowing Jensen to play more attacking may also help things slightly I suppose in terms of through balls from the middle.

If we need more creativity then I would look at playing Ghoddos out side and bring in Marcondes into the central role that Ghoddos was playing in.

The saddest thing is that the 'Brentford Twitter' mob had made their mind up that they didn't want him team before a ball was even kicked this season. There's no denying he's been poor but the knives were out for someone who hadn't played in nearly a year purely because TF had the audacity to suggest he might be able to fill the void left by Said.

It's pathetic.

I'm not sure where we go from here. He can't continue to start because he's getting worse as the games go by and Fosu isn't the answer. Ghoddos or Marcondes seems the only viable option at the moment.

I totally agree that some of the stuff posted directly on his Twitter page is horrible.

Discussing how well or poorly a player is performing on here is more than acceptable though IMO, otherwise what would we discuss on any player thread?

I try and be objective, albeit I accept we all have a different view, but I think he's adding ZERO to the side at the moment either offensively nor defensively. I hate to type it because he comes across as a great lad with a genuine affection for the club but his contribution in terms of assists/goals is very very low, and for a wide player we cannot afford to carry someone in a position which is so fundamental to the success of our attacking play.

I think Valgeirsson is having more impact at the moment for the B team and is high confidence. Wouldn't mind him getting a sub place

Do you think he should be given better instructions before each game. Yes he is low on confidence but it is his decision making that is my biggest gripe with him since the Luton game when he played well

How do you know what instructions he’s been given?
