England v Pakistan Test Series (Aug and Sep)

1st Test • Headingley, August 19 - 23 Weds start
2nd Test • Lord's, August 27 - 31
3rd Test • Edgbaston, September 09 - 13 Weds start

Stephen Fleming has been appointed England men's new Test head coach with Joe Root taking the unprecedented step of returning as full-time captain having relinquished the role in 2022

However, the 53-year old will not be in post for the upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan, which starts at Headingley on August 19, with Marcus Trescothick taking charge as interim coach.

Gower , Illingworth ?
Brearley and Gower certainly count.

Gubby Allen and plenty pre-war.

There's plenty more if you count stand-ins rather than official captains.

So what makes this "unprecedented" @Judio1999 ?

It's the first time Joe Root has done this......except for last month.

All rounder?

The big question was who was going to replace Ben Stokes as the all-rounder but that much isn't entirely obvious.

There is no place for Sam Curran, James Coles or Rehan Ahmed, who is dropped, which means Lawrence, if selected, might find his part-time spin plays a significant role.

Looking at that squad it is odd that Rehan Ahmed hasn't been included as there is no proper all-rounder 🤔 I could also make a case for Sam Curran as well.

No Craig Overton? Good news for Somerset.

Cricinfo has more detail
Jordan Cox will bat at No. 3 for England in their upcoming Test series against Pakistan after Jacob Bethell was ruled out of the three-match series with a right knee injury.

Dan Lawrence has been recalled after two years and will bat at No. 6, rewarded for a strong start to the County Championship season. His offspin is likely to see him occupy the allrounder spot vacated by Ben Stokes

Root stopped short of naming an XI for the first Test on Tuesday, but England are expected to pick Surrey all-rounder Dan Lawrence in Stokes' position at number six and rely on him to provide their spin-bowling option.

They will then choose between Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer, Josh Tongue, Gus Atkinson, Sam Cook, Brydon Carse and Matt Fisher for a four-man pace attack.

Joe Root is a better spin option than Dan Lawrence, although he has an entertaining action.

I don't follow cricket but their VAR equivalent is refreshingly quick. :hat:

Both teams have now list a review.
England wasted theirs really, as the impact was clearly outside.

With Tongue and Robinson both getting five-for's yesterday, an interesting solution as to which of them gets to keep the match ball:

57 ahead with 4 down, got to be looking at minimum 350 and a lead that is probably match winning

Radio 5 said at the start of the 1st day it was a 350 track
