There was something in the air pre match, like a first day at school, people were happy and the buzz was in the stands as old acquaintances were renewed. Season 6 in the Premier League seemed different, the unknown seemed not so hesitant but more exciting combined with the general shrug of who knows what the footballing gods will bring. The flags waved and the atmosphere was like an early home game in PL Season 1, we had reset on and off the pitch and were ready and pre match pitched it perfect.
Spurs strutted like the Harlem Globetrotters pre match but Brentford opened as they did 7 days before with the same XI with an intensity that left Capt Archie Grey after 30 minutes blinking like a lost child looking for his mother at the school gate. His team mates all looked at the grass and adjusted their quiffs and styles.
We opened with panache, KLP full of Yorkshire bounce chuckled as Mikey Moore was passed round and through as Schade full of speed and guile forced the Bees 10 yards forward and then some more as Grey scurried and hurried as the Brentford cavalry charged past him.
Sangare buzzed and passed and moved that made Tonali look at Gallagher and then behind him, our Malian was here then gone, like the Pimpernel, a sumptuous passage of play and a give and go and a cutback and KLP slotted home. Like kids at the playground our boys jumped for joy, and we celebrated and shouted sheer footballing joy, we were home and the football was jumpers for goalposts but at the highest elite level.
Sangare allowed Jensen the freedom to breathe jostle and hassle and he went though the powder puff Bergvall winning a 60/40 tackle. Pontus would have spat his pint out at the Spurs tackling, Matti pinged and Kinsky parried weakly and Vitaly bundled the rebound home. 2 nil down and 200 million spent with little heart had De Zerbi checking his receipts.
Thiago bounced a header off the bar and held the ball up confidently and differently, a chest off and a back heel, he continually pulled wide and looked for the onrushing Dango and Kev. We were the masters of speed and Van Hecke and Senesi were left in the backdraft. Two minutes into the second half, a pinpoint set piece, the high hanger from a Vitaly corner, Collins headed back setting Mamadou to volley superbly goal bound, Kinsky down parried again and Kayode smashed one into the roof of the net. The smiles the togetherness as the players leapt on each other in front of the West Stand was there for us all to see, we were a team taking apart expensive individuals, we were playing special stuff and Spurs and us knew it.
Thiago rolled a penalty off the inside of the post and Kelleher made two great stops from Moore look routine. The excellent now becomes ordinary, the levels have risen. Dams came on and gave us brains with Yarmo new bulked up brawn and together with Jaidon Anthony who looked a suitable contender for a joust with Dango for that right wing place.
Ajer played like a man who knows he’s at a different level to before, a good World Cup gives a man confidence and together with Nathan they look a strong oak pairing.
The whistle blew and we all cheered and grinned at each other, that was something special. Keith waved confidently at us all and Sangare did an impressive induction FFD jig in front of the West Stand. There are some grey days, ordinary days and then some very good days, playing football in the highest league, to the highest level in a way and manner you want your team to play, is the Holy Grail. Yesterday we achieved a level of football that not many Brentford sides have reached in the past 80 years, the beauty about this side is there is no ceiling and they, Keith and us have no idea where this journey takes us and that’s a fantastic feeling.
A famous politician once said, ‘Most of our people have never had it so good’. Footballing wise we are living those days, only one game in, but we can all secretly think between us, this could be a history making season.
