An inevitable departure having hardly played in the league last season, but one still tinged with sadness.

A club legend, one of our best ever signings and one of, if not the greatest centre back to have played for our club.

One of the few downsides of our success is always having to move on players who have done so well and achieved so much for us. Part of that 2019 summer where our recruitment took us to the next level, and for £3 million it will arguably be the biggest bargain of a transfer deal.

My overriding memory of Ethan will be sitting at Wembley in the second half of the playoff final against Swansea, I was a bag of nerves, watching the clock tick excruciatingly slowly towards full time. Yet every time the ball went into our box he would head it away and I'd feel just that little bit calmer. We were not losing that game with him on the pitch and I maintain he was our man of the match that famous day, despite the attacking players getting all the plaudits.

His contributions to our club will never be forgotten.

Very pleased for him, but have to say I’m a bit moist around the eyeballs about him going. Such an essential part of our journey, a joy to watch, and a top bloke into the bargain. He had already written plenty of his story before joining Brentford, but then added another whole volume with us, and now it’s time to write the next chapters. Best of luck to him, and he’ll get a big cheer from me whoever he plays for.

Sad day. I hate it when we can't say goodbye to players, hope Ethan knows how much we love him.

Was only reading an interview with Michael Caulfield the other day and he said the following about Ethan: 'Anything that Ethan achieves, he’s earned. He was rejected as a teenager and he’s been rejected a number of times since. He’s brought up a family, studied for a degree and done part-time coaching. Ethan’s story is the very essence of everything a good society should stand for.'

Both leaving the club without the send off the likes of Pontus got makes me incredibly sad.

It was money not earned but gifted by the club from the gate money. It was no doubt welcomed by the player receiving it but probably deeming especially in the time of a maximum wage. Before freedom of contract. Those days are long gone and just as well.

I can see this being Rico’s last season with us if he doesn’t maintain fitness. He’s been brilliant but ravaged by injuries in his time and I’m sure succession plans are in place whether we sign someone now or next summer who knows.

Few rumours doing the rounds that we’re in for Ethan Pinnock. I know he hasn’t played much recently but was always held in high regard by you. Has anyone heard anything your end and would it be a good signing?

Big Eth, Air Marshall Pinnock. Right right up there among my all time favourite Bees. An incredible servant to the shirt. A huge part, in every way, of our journey.

I had the privilege of chatting to him a few times when my eldest had 8 weeks at the academy and his boy was already there. Such a genuine great guy.

He said (this was maybe end of 2023 ) at that time his favourite ever Bee’s game was the 4-1 away at Chelsea.

I think he just wants to play some more footy. If he moves on then I wish him nothing but success.

Totally agree . There are times when the PL is a bit of a cynical exercise , and Ethan was the complete opposite of that . A real player bought up in the lower leagues , as we were . Loved having him , Rico , IT and Raya when we first burst onto the PL scene - all lower league schooled. Wish him all the best .

You said "handouts from supporters" in your first post rather than a gift the club. That was what I was referencing.

The word "handout" has been weaponised by certain groups in recent times so I was inferring some begging implication the reference to raising money for an ex-player. I now understand what you meant so thanks for clarifying.

Agreed.....lets say it is £30k a week (I have bo idea) thats £4.5m for him over the 3 years (less agent fees and tax). Nice send off for a player reaching their mid 30's.
