West Stand - A Call to Arms

I tried to take a flag on a 6ft stick in to the South Stand but couldn’t disguise it in my A4 bag.

I admit to being a bit dismissive of the idea of flags, thinking it would seem too forced, but the way it’s been implemented, with the variety of designs and sizes, and the past badges, has changed my mind. It looked cracking v Spurs, and with the North involved too it looked even better yesterday.

Completely agree and very excited now to see what’s in store for our next home game - a Friday night game under the lights against Chelsea could be very special…

I do think the comms need to be better about not taking the flags home with you. I heard it mentioned once, waaaay before kick off when the ground was still largely empty, and on my way out, I saw loads and loads being taken away, beyond the last point where the flag bins were.

I tried to tell people to leave them for next time. If they knew me they did. I was friendly about it. One woman I didn’t recognise just let her kid keep it, and said to me she had been given one last week, which she clearly hadn’t even brought to the game again. Saw loads of others take them

I recommend a trusty label printer and a message to leave them on the handle and at least that way I can point to the handle and shame people into leaving them with a bit more success

All the kids really enjoyed waving then where I was in North

Saturday was proof that waving silly flags has nothing to do with raising the atmosphere in the stadium. It’s the players performance that does this.
😂 welcome back!

Straight in Gary the gooner aka TW8 Casuals’ back pocket. Unbelievable he’s doing this in plain sight and everyone is falling for it. Was die-hard Arsenal fan until we started winning games.

As soon as it gets cold this will die a deserved death.
give over mate, clearly improved the atmosphere against spurs- and even though sunderland was quiet, it was way louder than drab games last season.

Have you raised these concerns with anybody in an official nature?

Its such a shame that anyone would take this view, and indeed particularly dangerous to publicly accuse someone of pocketing funds raised by others. Gary should be congratulated for his efforts, supported by many, to try and improve the atmosphere generated by our fans. Knowing Gary as I have done for a number of years (as indeed I know many who may have come on board since our upturn in fortunes) I have total faith in this initiative and its funding. Whilst not previously having been a fan of flag waving generally at football matches, if this helps getting fans more supportive than usual, I`m all for it.

Surely this is slander accusing Gary off pocketing the funds from the go fund me page for the flag waiving initiative.i would suggest Gary takes court procedings or at the least a gpg ban is incoming

Exactly this. Just seems like a nasty & vindictive post without offering any proof. Previous history of this? Hope it's the last one this site...

What's it got to do with the GPG?

My firm held belief is that it won’t improve the atmosphere. That was quite clear from Saturday where at 3.01pm, all flags were down and the moaning then started.

It might prove some visual colour pre-match but that’s it. The fans were brilliant against Spurs because the team were.

I assume the head of sustainability is handing in his notice having seen our green credentials ripped to shreds by constantly buying these flags, of which most get taken home. At least we’ve got venison in the pies now I guess.

It all feels forced fun at the company away day.

He’s now set up a Brentford supporters’ association (why?) which alongside your membership there will no doubt be links to all the tat he sells. It smells like a data collection exercise.

I can’t take seriously an initiative pushed by someone who owns a flag selling company that the club should have flags in the stadium is a good idea. Conflict of interest doesn’t even cover it.

He was Arsenal through and though when I first met Gary 20 years ago and he never supported the club until we started rising up the leagues recently in tandem with his business ventures. It’s all very convenient, smells fishy, and I’m not having it.

Fans were brilliant against Spurs before the team were. The two can go hand in hand, but this onus on the players to give a performance for the fans to cheer about is boring. First game of the season possibly had a bigger "effect" than the flags, but giving reason to get people in early and create an atmosphere before the game starts is a great initiative regardless of not liking the flags.

I don't understand the trying to bash someone for "only getting on board when we started winning" whilst also claiming that an atmosphere can only be good if the team are winning?

This thread, along with Gary's initiative, is about backing the boys and making noise whether we're winning, drawing or losing.

If you have an initiative that you think will work, feel free to speak up / put some time and effort into making it happen. Bitching and whining about what other people are trying to do is just sour and no help at all.

It’s easy. I use my mouth to sing and don’t moan when it’s going wrong.

No one’s going in especially early to wave a flag, pal - especially with yellow on it! You’ve been watching too much Bundesliga.

These are very serious allegations and important for people (and the players) to know if they want to get behind the initiative financially.

Again, have you, will you make this official?

Otherwise, it's a terrible look.

To get this straight you appear to be telling us this chap is committing fraud , is that right? I ask because I wanted to donate and obviously will not do so if it is a scam.

I've asked him twice whether he has or is willing to make this allegation official and he's conveniently dodged it (so far).

The fact that Peter G and the players have endorsed it, seems to suggest not, but for the very reason you mention, this kind of thing is very damaging to just throw out there.

West Stand - A Call to Arms

Would clappers detract from the atmosphere? Let’s use those as well then.
You seriously want to get a life Chapman, the players have donated and are happy with the arrangement, others, especially our younger fans are happy.
Knocking Gary in public is a disgrace and as far as his "Tat" goes, I have bought from his shop and have been very happy with service and quality.
Like I said, get a life before you get a slap!!

I think its typical Rebus bitter bs.
I 100% back any initiative to improve the atmosphere, especially prematch. If the players want it then lets give it to them. Happy to donate
Moaners are going to moan, nothing you can do about that

Obviously quite a sad individual that's looking for these sort of responses. Think I'll just ignore him from now on. Thanks for making me aware

West Stand - A Call to Arms

I'm not keen on the flag thing,it all felt a bit forced and Fulhamish.I even checked under my seat to make sure there weren't any clappers issued too.If people enjoyed it though that's fine i'm happy for them.

The flags themselves were weird and when i looked at the west stand it looked like people were waving different national flags, the black and yellow ones looked German .I know we're into diversity these days but just stick to one flag with the red and white stripes and club badge if this is going to be a regular thing.

No doubt, but he's not just moaning though, to publically accuse someone of fraud is a low, even for him.

Sounds like a very bitter person with a huge chip on his shoulders and not happy with his life so he has to belittle others.

West Stand - A Call to Arms

I agree that the players performance plays a huge role in the atmosphere, however the flags do not hamper it at all. If the players are going into their own pocket to help fund it then the club clearly is aware of it and potentially encourage it?? (could be wrong)

The flags also engage younger fans as other posters on this board have spoken personally about their own kids. Getting them involved will carry on the fanbase In the next 10-15 years #Yoof

To throw around accusations and shoot down the idea because you don't like is distasteful at best, do better.

The different shapes and designs are so it dosent look forced and 'Fulhamish' funnily enough but I see what you mean.

If you put the accusation to one side for a moment, it's perfectly reasonable for someone to dislike the idea of flags.

Absolutely, but to shoot it down in the way he has while not providing anything constructive or ideas isn't exactly the best way to go about things.

No problem whatsoever to people who don't like the idea but they need to suck it up as the overwhelming majority do like it, and the atmosphere has been good.

I think @rebus failed his interview for the diplomatic corps. 😉

Are these flags at cost price or is a profit being made? Maybe that is the angle Rebus is getting at?

Well done to you. So do I. But plenty of us in the stadium do not.
People with young kids definitely will get in that bit earlier to get a flag for them. Which is besides
the point anyway, because I didn't say people are going early to wave a flag. Part of the initiative is people getting inside, at the seats, and creating an atmosphere as the players finish their warm up.
Guess we can't wave a flag with our badge on it then, since that contains yellow too? Not to mention the numerous kits over the years. Another sour, catty comment.
Never watched a Bundesliga game either 👍

For me I am happy to accept that someone who organises and delivers something I really appreciate and like may make a profit.
What does it matter?
The club shop is full of merchandise from which many businesses make a profit.
