Footballers In Trouble

Footballers In Trouble

Played at the same time and in the same league but a different division. Horrible moment.
If I remember correctly, I think a GPGer (or former one) was playing in that game, I don't want to name them in case I dreamt it up, it was a long time ago.

Footballers In Trouble

I had a pre season friendly with the wardens at Ashford remand Centre. One of our players was sent off in the first five minutes. Turned out he was a former inmate.

A laugh as long as no one was hurt.

[Carragher] was probably persuaded by some chancer to invest in a tax avoidance scheme that wasn’t legal, so has ended up with a huge tax bill. Surprised he hasn’t come to a payment schedule agreement with HMRC.
Yeah, article in The Athletic (paywalled) states that he was one of a whole group of footballers who were persuaded to "invest" in a government tax incentive scheme designed to boost the UK film industry in the 90's/00's. Except that some industry figures set up a lot of dodgy schemes which were solely designed to get tax breaks (i.e. not to make genuine, commercial films), which the Revenue later declared to be illegal. All of which was made worse by dodgy financial "advisers" latching on to footballers, even putting them into (otherwise valid) schemes in such a way as was never going to be legal either.

This the scheme that Danny Murphy got caught up in?

Yep - as the link mentions:
Hundreds of footballers are believed to have invested with Kingsbridge Asset Management, some lost their homes and were made bankrupt.
Former England international Murphy believes he lost roughly £5m. Meanwhile former Leeds striker [Rod] Wallace was declared bankrupt in 2024.
Tommy Johnson, Sean Davis and Craig Short are other members of the V11 group who have spoken publicly.
City of London Police opened an investigation into the case in 2018 and told the players they were "victims of crime".
But the case was later closed, with the force concluding there was "insufficient evidence to support a realistic prospect of conviction".

Also Brian Deane, Michael Thomas and Andrew Cole, amongst (many) others.

Very sad tbh.

I think Davis had many demons in his life because of it. Doing window cleaning or something similar.

Do you have a link to the Athletic article?

Beyond football. How has the Serbia tennis player got away with clear fraud on this matter.

Footballers In Trouble

Surely its fraud, no? Travelling under false documentation etc. etc.

Xhaka admits fake covid certificate, and have as such A: Been withdrawn from the Swiss national team, and B: Should expect to be charged with it, since now it's a fairly open-and-shut case with a direct admission of illegality, which as such would likely carry a heavy fine as soon as the prosecutor gets through the paperwork surrounding the rest of the case-complex

Hmmm

On a serious note about our squad, the overseas registered vehicles thing is risky. Met police have a special seize as many expensive cars that should not be on the road as they can day every summer, usually August and focusing on Kensington, Westminster etc It is their fun thing. Would not like to see a Bee in trouble for a silly reason

It's Cardiff that are doing the alleging.

"Cardiff City Football Club has, with immediate effect, terminated the contract of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing."

My suspicion is that this will be a drug issue as otherwise the club would simply sell him - after all the window is open. They obviously can't sell him as he will be on a ban and they have sacked him in order to avoid paying his wages. Plus you can only terminate employments "with immediate effect" (i.e. without notice) for gross misconduct...
Might be purely coincidental, but another contract coming to an end early... replies suggest a court appearance
