European Competitions Match Updates 2026-27

Although I'd expect most PL teams to beat Milan
That may be the case but you have to be in the competition first. Expectations are fine, but nothing beats the real experience. Not having experienced any European nights i can only imagine it would great, who ever you beat. You can probably say the same about beating MU or Spurs these days but it doesnt take anything away from the occasion imo.

Anyone jealous of the Cherries tonight then? 🍒
Yes, though if it had been us it would have been 24 hours respite from weeks of messageboard wailing anguish that we were flushing our PL status down the drain for the folly of pursuing some European fun!! Because they've obviously not been doing great in the league so far this season. I imagine some of their fans are pushing that point even now.

But yes well done to them. Hopefully it will be us one day soon.

Some people on social media are arguing this in particular shows why European football is broken, if little old Bournemouth can beat Milan. I sense there's a bit of a "stay in your lane" feeling here, little clubs like Bournemouth and Brentford shouldn't be entitled to this sort of opportunity. Plenty have remarked on the financial imbalances but I didn't hear too many people saying European football was broken when Villa beat a team with a much lower wage bill in the Europa league final. "Big clubs like Villa are entitled to succeed, little teams like Bournemouth aren't?"

Great post. The problem i have with this type of statement is its often based on what was happening 20 to 50 years ago. So it suits the arguement of today of the mighty Leeds, Nottm For, AC Milan etc etc, and reference to Brentford, Como and Muff as little teams. We all know that the football of today is different and requires i would say more smarter solutions, so for instance its not so dependant on the size of the clubs ground, or the number of supporters you have. I would argue those so called bigger clubs had a major head start on us but have been unable to change their approach to what is important in football today, allowing us to sneak up on the rails. Spurs being a prime example of this (throwing money at the issue solves all problems). Despite many of the so called bigger clubs living in denial it may take another 20 or 30 years for the penny to drop.

Somewhere in Italy, there's a fan suggesting: "I'd expect most Serie A teams to beat Manchester Utd" - and they'd probably be right! ;)

Anyhow, on checking their league table, Milan are fourth and unbeaten in seven (4 wins, 3 draws), so I wouldn't dismiss B'mouth's result too easily.

Even against 10 men, that was quite a performance (imo).

Like you...I have a sense that the football landscape will change in the coming years....it would only take a sustained period of global economic downturn/austerity for this to happen... notwithstanding the outcome of the MCFC investigation......and dare I say it....'clubs like' BFC and the other clubs you mention who already operate a sustainability model...will be very well placed to compete with the recognised 'big' clubs in all competitions....we don't have to change what we are currently doing..... but the big spenders will... our time will come.

Very good post.

For as I pointed out to a younger football fan the other day, the Premier League was originally formed when the (then) Big Five determined to break away from the EFL, with those five being Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs and... ... Everton!

Milan being good in Italy would only fuel some other's feelings of an imbalance "even the 4th best team in Italy can't keep up with the English dominance"

But it's not even really one of those situations where the numbers tell you the "big club" is actually the other one.

24/25 Turnover: Bournemouth £181m, Milan £416m
Wages: Bournemouth £158m, Milan £154m. Bournemouth's had also jumped over £20m from the previous season.

Sometimes teams just play badly on the night, and you have to give credit to the winners?
It's funny that they got to chant "Ruben Amorim it's happened again"

Bournemouth probably pay higher wages then Milan and also are smarter in the transfer market. I mean they spent £65m or so on goncalo Ramos who is pretty ordinary

Well as you can see wage bill is very similar. So yes they probably do have a smaller squad and pay more to key players.

Some clubs have an endless list of mistakes in the transfer market and a churn of new managers who want their own thing, too (hello Manchester United), so a smart transfer strategy (as you say) and less chaos also makes the money go further. Bournemouth won't have many players rotting in the reserves on £100k+ a week, same as us.

Curiously enough, last night Milan fielded more English players in their starting XI (three) than Bournemouth (two).

Meanwhile, further evidence of English domination in Europe:

English clubs played nine games in Europe this week, losing just once.
In fact, Premier League clubs have lost just four of 26 games played across the three continental competitions so far this season. Manchester United are responsible for two of them.
In the five seasons since the Conference League was introduced, no league has yet won all three, but in three different seasons Premier League clubs have won two of them.
Over the past two seasons, Premier League clubs have played 21 knockout ties against European opposition in the Conference League and Europa League - and won all 21. (The only two ties they have lost have been to other English teams.)

Aston Villa vs Barcelona and Villarreal vs PSG (who are 4 up already) gift the opposition goals with the keeper playing “that pass” straightish to the midfielder just outside the box putting him under pressure. Elite playing out from the back badly.

Actually it's rather sad. There was a time when I'd always support an English club in Europe and in my case particularly Utd. Now though we have cheating , diving Liverpool whose arse of a manager is on record as saying he's going to encourage it!
Then we have Utd who are an absolute joke atm, City who are guilty of cheating for years and Arsenal well words fail me where they're concerned. Doesn't say much for English football.

Goes from bad to worse for Man Utd. Baleba has done his hammy. Likely to be out for our game on 28 Nov.

I looked away for a minute, what did he do to get sent off?
Late challenge.

But then came back on to the pitch at the end to celebrate and Carrick appeared to tell him to go back in and he starts throwing a hissy fit.
