Final Score Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

Exactly this. I felt oddly optimistic at HT, but there was a worrying lack of urgency and cohesion in the second half when the game was still there for the taking.
....I think it was jlove who hit the nail on the head with his comments last night... along the lines of....we need a settled team who are used to playing in a system they understand....a lack of cohesion was evident last night...as it was at Hull.... chopping and changing a team brings with it problems....so hopefully...now that this competition is gone....KA can focus on creating a settled side for the forthcoming PL games.

Wilson/Thiago doesn't work leaves us vulnerable from the wing, PL wingers would have a field day,
Hakon and Diouf had a nightmare, Diouf seemingly proving what WH fans have said, we dont make many mistakes on signings but he concerns me.
Schuster and Ajer looked good, Thiago still looks way off, although his goal was very good, most of the rest ok.

We do have an age you know that young man? When you’ll get to our age oh boy your prostrate will be your worse enemy 😂

I spent 4 days in hospital in August due to my prostate, 6 weeks with a catheter weeing myself, but my bed sheets are still drier than half the posters on here after a mickey mouse cup defeat.

Wilson off and Thiago stays on? Hope to eat my word but it looks like Andrews wants to die on the hill of rebuilding Thiago’s confidence in the detriment of I don’t know having an attacking threat?

I think we can agree it was great management and coaching then, we looked much better last 20 and Thiago scores.

I am sure he will accept the apology. ;)

I can only dream of what Le Bris could do with our talented squad.

About 20-30% of what Keith can do with it.

We put out a weakened team, the keeper and the defence had a mare for 20 mins, that does not mean Sunderland's coach is better than ours, come on, that is a stupid take.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

We were schooled last night. We should have been ahead but couldn't make the chances count then once behind, Sunderland were more than happy to let us have the ball. We are packed full of talented players but we seem to have lost our quick forward passing patterns of play. Side to side and backwards against effective pressing by a young side willing and able to run and run all night.
You can't afford to make the horrific defensive mistakes at anytime but to concede three in such a short period of time is inexcusable and left us far too much to do. I was disappointed by the lack of urgency in the second half, we didn't lay a glove on them until too late in the game. An early second goal following half time would have created the "chaos" that KA desires but we were passive and careless with the ball.
Not our night, feel sorry for the travelling fans who deserved a better performance and our confidence would have taken a knock before an important home game on Saturday. KA and his team have urgent work to do. We are a team in need of a rock solid performance to get our mo jo back.
Struggle with this, we weren't schooled at all. Schooled is a term i'd use when the opposition has a brilliant plan and does everything to the book. What I saw was Sunderland literally couldn't believe their luck that our keeper made 3 mistakes, our LB made 2 and we kept missing chances. It wasn't a schooling, i'm not even sure they wanted to go through tbh. We did it to ourselves.

It is almost as if you have never seen a team play against a low block before. This is the [pattern of play in 99.9% of games nowadays, we missed chance after chance, that isn't being schooled. Sorry, but this is just nonsense.

Agree.... last night was...on reflection... actually morbidly amusing... their supporters were visibility a bit meh about the whole occasion...up until they scored as a result of errors from our players...then all of a sudden they woke up not believing their luck... I'm not sure many of them believed before that game started last night that they would go through to the next round... given the team they put out.... it's kind of by default that they now have... it's a funny ol' game.... being a supporter.

Agreed, and now they have away to Palace, an extra game and a long trip down south mid week. I still think they woulda taken the loss, even now  Brentford, init

I know right...they didn't really want it..

Just because it’s different to yours doesn’t make it stupid.

Christ I can be negative at times but massive overreaction to the past few games…. 8 changes yesterday, we beat liverpool if YY doesn’t get sent off and there was only going to be one winner v Hull. I’m confident we will be celebrating come Saturday evening!
We are turning into the online fans of the big 6 :ROFLMAO:

I think this would still only have worked with Kelleher in goal
Think the No 1 keeper should play all cup games beyond the first couple of rounds. If the No 2 keeper doesn't want to stay on that basis, there's the door. There will be a long line wanting to take his place.

Do we still need that thread “Signs we’re a big club” if we consider the league cup, a trophy that we won so many times, a Mickey Mouse cup?

Asking for a yellow peeling friend

Okay, I accept that perhaps "schooling" was the incorrect word on this occasion, however given all of the factors surrounding the schedule, availability, selection and tactics we were not up for this in the way I expected. Given the mare of a first half performance I believed that the second half would be very different in the way we approached our way back into the game. Yes a low block is common and effective if done well, Sunderland were good at it and we couldn't find another way of playing. Like others my sense of frustration is borne out of the missed opportunity again of progressing in a competition that we could have gone further

Sunderland are bottom of the PL and were bottom of the Justice League last season. I don’t want Le Bris anywhere near our squad.
They were also the best team to play us at home this season by a mile

Half the GPG objects to complex newfangled terms like low block. Footy fans init. “Kick it forward”. “Take his legs”.

We were not that sharp enough last night. Second balls. Some sloppy passes. I’m liking Keith’s more aggressive tactics. And the players are humans who had an off night. It’s the cup. Teams go out. Like Brighton, Arsenal and Brentford.

I can’t recall any prem season where we have excelled when dominating possession. Happy to be corrected. Given they were 3 goals up they just let us have the ball in our own half. We didn’t properly work out how to use that possession to score. Given we top the league in direct attacks you can see why. Our scoring threat is fast breaks from turnovers.

Maybe that’s why we kept giving them the ball back 🤦‍♂️

You need players who will take a risk to carry a ball through a deep defence with skill. We've had serial dreadful luck with the sort of players needed to break down a low block, from Josh Dasilva onwards.

This is the mentality that means we might as well not be in this league.
I used to compare us to Crystal Palace. Seemingly happy to keep our nose in this festering trough, but they’ve won stuff now.
These cups are our only chance of winning something, other than the right to participate in a League we can’t win.
Last night was totally unacceptable.
The “formation” was bonkers. Nobody in an attacking role seemed to have any idea what we were trying to do with two up top.
Igor and Callum looked like they just been introduced to each other in a pub car park half an hour before kick off.
Compare us to Sunderland who made 11 changes yet were organised and disciplined.
I can only dream of what Le Bris could do with our talented squad.
You missed the subtle touch of sarcasm!

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

I think we've suffered the last two games partly because of the red cards vs Liverpool and the suspensions.
Other games we've been wide open to counter attacks and attacks down the wings, Brighton last season at GTec springs to mind.
We still could have won yesterday, there's another game in two days time.

Sunderland 3 - 2 (Wilson, Thiago) Brentford - EFL Cup R4

For all the moaning about the Hull performance, and "yet another draw", yesterday night was a reminder that in previous years, we used to lost that kind of games, and that we can still do the same this one.
Unfortunate not to get a longer cup run, at least now, unlike previous years, we try harder. You could see that in the lineup, and in the sense of urgency towards the end of the players, to keep pushing.
Let's hope the FA cup run is better

Funny how it becomes a Mickey mouse competition once we are out
It's a low key competition whether we're in or out. Teams routinely rotate most of their usual starting eleven, even in the later rounds. I think that tells you all you need to know about priorities versus PL games.

You wot? Any competition without Brentford in it is obviously Mickey Mouse.
