Things Others Say About Brentford FC

I think we are PL savvy now. In our first couple of seasons we’re bullied off the ball, but have now hardened up and fight fire with fire when we need to. We are not a dirty side and have had relatively few players sent off unlike Arsenal used to have when Aren Wenger was in charge.
Spoke too soon.

Merse has always been very complimentary about us tbf
When i used to play criclet for Phoenicians, his brothers team played football at our ground, he was there and a really nice bloke, happy to chat to everyone about Arsenal or Brentford - he definitely has a soft spot for us

Played for a local pub team for a while (imagine turning up on a Sunday and Merson is in the opposition midfield 😂). Heard he's just a down to earth, top guy.

33 mins on. The first lad speaking says Brentford are the equivalent of Wigan a few years ago as, to paraphrase, we are a place where "local middle class folk who want to see Prem football come along".
Is he wrong though ?

He was on the stand of a firm at a trade show I was at at the NEC this summer, had a goal set up taking pens etc, obviously he’s being paid but not for one moment throughout the day did he stop, constant chats/selfies etc, either a top actor or genuinely enjoying himself and the interaction.

I also remember him being on the Sky soccer panel for a game in our first championship season and being flabbergasted at the football we were playing “WHAT A TEAM THIS LOT ARE!!” as we took someone apart.

We all know the game's roots lie in working class culture, but basically every PL football club's fanbase in 2026 represents a large cross section of society (yes, through gritted teeth, even Fulham). Obviously there are subtle variations from region to region and club to club, but to attribute any one class to any one club is a reductive, lazy intellectual cop out in my opinion.

Reminds me of a funny story. By most measures I grew up middle class, but as a kid I was taken to Griffin Park for the very first time by our neighbour who was a builder and as working class as they come. I remember as we left, my mum said "don't let him swear!" He replied "oh come on can't he at least say piss flaps?"

To this day as a 34-year-old man I still mutter "piss flaps" under my breath as I walk to my seat.

Telegraph Sport claims "Brentford have the worst disciplinary record in the Premier League, while Hull rank joint-second.

The Bees have collected 18 yellow cards and two reds".

I would have thought it was Chelsea, not us.

😞

Quite an incredible stat if true as we are not a dirty team. Strong? Yes. Physically imposing? Yes. But dirty? I can’t think of a tackle I have seen this season by a bees player where I have muttered under my breath ‘that was a bit out of order’ but I have seen a significant number from other sides

Exactly.
Aston Villa fans kept going on about how bad we were, quoting foul counts.
But a lot of that was because we got fouls against us for walking on the pitch whilst McGinn and co were allowed to do whatever.
Same v Liverpool to be fair.

I agree but I guess we wear the same tinted glass

While it's true, and we're just about starting, Brighton have done it for longer than the 4 years of difference in our otherwise mostly similar path, note for an obvious example MacAllister being signed by them back in 2019

Brentford and Brighton have been doing this a long, long time before 2019, probably nearly 10 years before. I wouldn't pin that up as an example.

Simon Garner of Blackburn record scorer fame used to play Sunday morning round here, he left Wycombe Wanderers and became a postie.

Meaningless, we know half the free kicks against us and most of the yellows have been for people like Mcginn sticking his arse out and flopping over, and refs never book players who tactically foul us and kick the ball away.

Also, havent at least 4 yellows been for dissent?
Hardly putting us in the same bracket as hatchet men....

If so he would be doing it against all teams, not just us, so why do we get caught out and receive yellows

With the Forest game coming up I think this thread is going to be quite busy, with that lot having plenty to say.

Fascinating article on ESPN about points per Pound spent. We come out as the top club and it makes the claim that we would top the Premier League if we had spent what Man City has due to our efficiency and effectiveness https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_...teams-money-spent-per-point-man-city-cheating

Interesting reading.

Thought this line was stating the bleeding obvious however

So, this is what it all comes down to: If Brentford had been allowed to spend as much money as, say, Manchester City, they'd be Premier League champions by now.

Sorry, that can't be right!
We're "set-piece" FC arent we??
Even the commentators are having to correct themselves these days. The one the other night against Sunderland said we were "dangerous from set pieces" then, when we didn't take a long throw, he said "they seem to be taking less of the long throws they brought into fashion. In fact, all clubs have been doing them less." You could practically hear his brain working it real-time.

Saying that, and partly in reference to the article about crosses, "set piece goals" by Opta standards are more than just the chance converted directly from a throw or dead ball whipped in from a corner or FK. The whole "phase" of play is counted as the set piece. So if the first ball is headed away and then we score from a recycled cross or resulting long range shot (rare I know, unless you're name Ghoddos or Janelt), it's still considered a goal from a set piece.

Other data provider might consider this an open play goal but usually there is an expectation that a number of passes, distance the ball is carried or meaningful possession from the other team (other than a clearance) before it's consider a new phase of play from a set piece.

Indeed.

Opta has us as 17th best club in the world, but the lowest ranked of the 3 Bs. Brighton in 8th and Bournemouth in 12th.
Were it not for Spurs, believe we’d be the highest ranked team not playing in European competitions this season.
