Former Goalkeepers

Being a newbee, I'd like to add my frustration with the GK position. To me Bentley has always been a poor keeper, never given me or more importantly the defence confidence, maybe why the defence as a whole has been poor for so long. If you have no confidence in your GK and have to constantly predict what he's going to do next. Showing my age, but does he even look like a GK? When and who was the last decent keeper we had?
That Knob that was on loan from Arsenal ? He's done well for himself.

Im not sure I can remember us having a really dodgy keeper since poor old Ashley Bayes. Even Ashley had a respectable career once he had matured as a keeper.
I think we have been blessed with decent keepers.
Benno was my all time favourite.

He was there on Saturday in The Braemar stand

I don't think we've had an outstanding keeper, apart from Wojech, since McKellar nearly four decades ago. We have had some good, solid keepers though. I think Daniels offers a reasonable level of competency as Bonham probably would. I am sorry for Dan but he needs to be rested and reassessed, his time will come again.

Paul Smith was a very good keeper

Some of those tweets are good goals by the opposition than goalkeeping mistakes, sometimes you see what you want to see....

Agree, there are 4-5 Howlers in there but 3 at least are nothing to do with him.

On another note why is everyone ganging up on judge. All he did was shout and stampni frustration and an appalling mistake that cost us the game. If he was asked I bet he would say we are all in it together, he is a great keeper etc etc.

I also don’t get this thing about bonham being one of England best young prospects....really? Does anyone remember his first game at Watford and the string of clangers that followed. I am sure he has improved but where is the evidence a bloke who has only played a few loan games is better than the two first choice ones.

I suppose it’s the old adage, you always become a better player when you are not playing.

I couldn't agree more, which basically means he is short of confidence. You have more knowledge than me of training sessions, accepted; but it doesn't take much to get in a keeper's head and it could just be the way certain basic skills are being covered. Speculation, sure, but you can't ignore the dramatic downturn in form has happened since the change of coach, so that must be the first place to look.

Bentley made 4-5 howlers last season too, remember Leeds at home.

It isn’t something new, this season they seem to have come in a short space of time, I am sure it happens to most keepers but I can’t remember one costing us so many goals in one season and keeping their place.

McKellar was the first goalie I can remember seeing at the bees as a kid.

You've forgotten the completely mad Icelander we had on loan for one game who went bonkers when we scored a last minute winner at GP in his only game. I've forgotten his name lol.

Remember when Woijech was in goal and when we conceded thinking how has he not saved it, he was very good.

Sczheney is the best GK I have seen in my long years watching BFC. He saved us around 12 points or more in his time with us. Bentley will end up costing us that many. Sure we need some more firepower up front but first and foremost we need a reliable keeper who will stop gifting the opposition soft goals. Sadly for a GK Supporters remember rolling out the ball straight into the path of Andre Gray in the Watford friendly or a ball falling over his head one evening and then blaming the lights over routine saves, need I go on. Enough is enough.

the problem with Dearden was that he'd pull off world class saves but only due to the fact he'd be reacting to an absolute howler he'd made where he'd dropped the ball at the oppositons feet

Huddersfield in the home PO semi as a prime example.

Out of that list I'd describe only McKellar and Szczesny as excellent, though several others were very good and one or two quite amusing, including Dearden and Olafur Gottskalksson.

I always remember Tony Parks who in the first minute of our massive FA cup QF at Anfield (#inflatable #42 coaches) ended up on the half way line! I remember looking thinking "what on earth are you doing"??!!

I honestly don't remember 4-5 last year but in any case he seemed more secure and less edgy last season.

He was very good indeed until they got rid of back passes that keepers could pick up!

Former Goalkeepers

I'd say that Gottskalksson definitely came near to being one of our top keepers. But a number of those mentioned were at best good. You might as well praise Paddy Roche and Petar Borota. There was also a young keeper we had from Glasgow Rangers for about 4 games who I was quite impressed with, but his career flopped after he went back to Ibrox.

The Flying Pig (Dearden) and All Talk (Lee) ? You're having a laugh.

Dearden wasn't a bad keeper, yes everyone remembers the howler against Huddersfield and the Phantom whistle at Bristol Rovers but maybe we should remember his inspired performance in the Play off Final against Crewe. We lost 1-0 and it could have been 4 or 5 goals but for him. Problem was he wasn't the tallest and to be polite was a big boned lad, gave us good service though.

Richard Lee was an excellent shot stopper though if you read his autobiography always seemed to suffer from confidence issues and was never 'in love' with goalkeeping regarding as a career rather than a passion. Recovered from a terrible start to his Bees career - Fulham friendly- to be decent enough for us and occasionally inspired - Everton Pen Shoot out. For me Nelson was a far worse keeper than both.

Szczęsny was easily the best GK I've every seen, technically brilliant and with a confidence and swagger way beyond his teenage years. Hamer was no slouch either but seems to have spent most of his career content as a very well paid No.2 for Premiership clubs. Such is the life of a Goalkeeper.

Colin Scott?

Former Goalkeepers

I’m getting forgetful but who was Lee?
Dearden and Nelson were nowhere near excellent and Peyton was way past his best

Dearden was really really good for 3 years 1994/7. Nelson was also consistent for 2 seasons and Peyton despite his age and Fulham heritage was quite brilliantvwhen he came in in loan.

Former Goalkeepers

All goalkeepers have bad games. Chesney was appalling against MK Dons and threw in all three goals. It’s about consistency.

Mckellar tops the list for me.

Former Goalkeepers

Worst I have seen are Bates, Nelson, Parks, Roche and Bentley. Dearden could be considered for selection also.
The best were McKellar, Swinburne and Smith. When playing well, Hamer was decent enough.

This mention of Gottskalksson sent me to wikipedia to see what happened to him: 'In March 2010 Ólafur was sentenced to a ten months prison term in Iceland for housebreaking, robbery and violent attack. In October 2011 he was sentenced to additional four months in prison for similar charges, including serious violence.'

I didn't think they had crime in Iceland.

Let's agree to disagree, Dearden was decent for a little fat bloke but not excellent IMHO, Nelson was always erratic and his distribution was dire. Peyton was in goal on that day in Bristol and didn't care enough for me, I saw him as the Putney keeper so maybe I'm being harsh on him.

And it goes on to read "On 25 July 2016, he was arrested after a police chase for driving under influences with his five-year-old son in the backseat. He checked into rehab on 4 August but was rushed to the National University Hospital of Iceland two days later due to internal bleeding and broken ribs, injuries he claimed he sustained when the police arrested him."

Looks like like he turned out to be a model human being post football!

Well, goalkeepers are supposed to be mad!

I thought Clark Masters would go on to do well although didn't it go to his head a bit? Still only 31
