Leeds Away - Wed 21st August

I have never been able to make this fixture before, but a quirk in my diary means this time I will be able to fork out £40 or whatever they mug away end fans for these days.

I am thinking of basing myself in one of the nicer villages or towns around Leeds and taking two days off work. Any suggestions for which one to choose?

I live just outside of Skipton, direct train into Leeds in 35 mins. Skipton itself is a quiet market town with a few decent pubs and a brilliantly preserved castle. Leeds/Liverpool canal goes through it, but main draw is your at the edge of the dales with stunning scenery a few miles away.

I went to school in Ilkley, a bit of a twee town, but nice countryside. 30 minutes to Leeds by train

We had a nice couple of days in Knaresborough a few years ago. About 20 miles from Leeds. Remember a good pub/restaurant right next to the station.

No doubt northern based fans will have ideas for you.

Knaresborough/Harrogate is a good shout. Plenty of touristy things to do.

Ilkley nice place too. Just stay north of Leeds and you’ve got great little places a plenty. Otleys a nice wee town too but no train station in the town, Menston or Guisely closest a couple of miles away.

Yeah, beautiful countryside, but I couldn’t wait to get out and down to London. That’s what comes of growing up in a claustrophobic farming village.

But yes you are right, there’s plenty of places worth visiting.

I love living where I do now, but I’d have been bored out of my mind growing up here.

Leeds Away - Wed 21st August

Plus an award winning butchers with great pies, almost opposite the castle.

Yup, that’s why sometimes I have such a negative view of the place. I’m coming up for this match and will visit family so I’ll be visiting some of those lovely villages that i’ve now learned to appreciate in my old age.

I’d recommend anywhere on the ilkley - Leeds train route for a visit, and agree with Chorlton. Skipton is nice and the castle is great.

Best pork pies are from Hebden bridge. Travelled all over North Yorkshire savouring them, when I lived up there.
Nice place Hebden Bridge too.
We used to live in Rainton, near Thirsk.
Harrogate nice place

Sorry, not IT literate but our lot stayed in a B&B for a tenner a night first time we had Leeds........

If it helps to balance the books there is a cheap B&B on the Dewsbury Road within walking distance or cheapo taxi ride of the town centre which has a rate of £10 a night and to give you an idea of the quality of room, the breakfast is alright to be fair. It's directly opposite a boozer which has a newspaper article reporting that this 'problem boozer reopens' framed by the bar. Get involved Brentford.

Chspeltown is very cheap, you can get rooms by the hour and the women are very accommodating

I would love to do a pilgrimage to Harrogate, home of Sam Smiths Brewery. I’ve got cousins in Leeds. Seems to hold on to traffic pollution as badly as London. Perhaps it’s because of the Pennines and the prevailing wind.

Sam Smiths brewery is and has always been in Tadcaster, about 20 miles South East of Harrogate, across the road is the brewery of Sam Smiths uncle, John Smith.

Tadcaster again is a fairly non-descript but pleasant small market town, but does have a lot of pubs, only ever passed through it so no idea if they’re any cop.

If you're into beer production then I’d suggest a visit to Masham (pronounced Massum) further up the A1 near Ripon, which is home to the Black Sheep & Theakstons breweries, really quaint pretty little village, the tours are supposed to be very good. Better beer than Sam or John Smiths for a kick off!!

Of course. Not been to either. Tadcaster for me then.

Family in Harrogate. Lovely town.
Strangely, we used to spend more time in Leeds before Bees started playing them every season. It may be an age thing, but just goes to show perhaps how their exorbitant footie prices can put someone off the whole city.

Don’t forget there is also a brothel immediately opposite the B&B - so every chap need catered for if your into that thing

Dead right. Beat me to it. Been out all day on booze cruise to Calais.

Does you accent return and your wallet tighten when you're back in the home land.

Accent gets stronger. Always have a tight grip on my wallet these days, although not the vice-like one demanded by hersel'.

If your on the Dewsbury Road you're pointing in the right direction (on your way back to the b & b).

If you are a walker you could pitch up in Grassington on Wednesday evening. Several nice pubs with good food and rooms. Then spend Thursday walking to Ilkley via Bolton Abbey which is a very nice walk taking in a lot of very nice pubs. Lots of places to stay in Ilkley and lots of good pubs in the town. Then walk to Leeds along the river via Otley (reputed to have the highest pub density of any English town) then route along the Meanwood Valley trail which takes you into central Leeds without seeing anything vaguely urban until you’re half a mile away. Then enjoy Friday night in the city centre.

Cracking idea, Gromit. Recommend The Craven Arms at Appletreewick for a pint of Old Peculiar.

One of my cousins lives in Otley. Can't believe it has more pubs per capita than Brentford?

Appletreewick spoils you for choice with pubs. The main problem with my route here is that the pubs are front loaded at the early end of each day’s route. A better way to sample them would be to start at Leeds the morning after the match and walk the route in reverse. Otherwise you leave Appletreewick at 11.30am four or five pints in (and end your adventure by failing to do the stepping stones at Bolton Abbey).

Otley is much less densely populated than Brentford but I think pub density is heavily contested- on other ways of counting it Cambridge or York lay claim to the title of most pubs.

Is going to very interesting now. Might be worth paying their price for a ticket just to hear their comments when Pontus comes on the pitch.

Leeds Away - Wed 21st August

Was undecided about this match, will definitely be attending now. Worth the £40 to hear the greeting PJ gets ( although i’m still not 100% convinced we won’t get outbid ).

As for Otley and pubs, I spent many a Saturday in my youth doing pub crawls in all of the towns in this area. Anyone still standing after doing all the pubs in town was usually down to them spilling pints to avoid drinking them. Probably one of the reasons why I don’t drink now.

Doubt the game will be on . Probably postponed due to a waterlogged pitch with all the tears of the crying Leeds fans.

Leeds Away - Wed 21st August

Probably going now, was a bit 'maybe' earlier but the fact that it's midweek has made my mind up in a good way. Hopefully we can come away with something, the last few occasions, plus today's news, will make this an interesting atmosphere.

Tempted to attend this game. What's easier coach/train on a mid-week back to London?

Last time I checked it looked impossible to do by train (unless you don't work normal hours).

Brentford still not selling tickets

They should be selling at least 3 weeks before every away game
