Jon Gosling confirms that he is standing for election as Supporter Director.

Hi everyone,

Having recovered from my 50th birthday and regained my faculties, today I have confirmed that I will be standing in the election. You will see in my statement below that I state that I am 49. This is not a deliberate lie designed to mislead but due to the fact it was true when I wrote it! I understand that the statements cannot be changed once submitted.

If you have any questions once you have read my statement you can chose to; post these below, send me a pm or email me at [email protected]. I will then answer these by the same method they have been submitted to me.

Regards

Jon

Election Statement

I am 49 years old, married with two grown-up children and have supported Brentford FC since 1969. I work for a large multinational company, in a senior management position, leading a team responsible for enabling business improvement across Europe. Since November last year I have been a Bees United board member and prior to this been an active member of Bees United launching the Bee Green recycling scheme, organising a supporter marketing “think-tank”, participating in the Fundraising and Marketing meetings and I am still bucket collecting, mainly at Brook Road (where I am a season ticket holder).

My election statement to support my candidacy to the Bees United board stated:

“… whilst recognising the need for speedy decisions and confidentiality it is my observation (and those of fellow supporters) that:

· The workings of the Board have not been as open as they could be

· The governance to ensure that all Bees United Brentford FC directors are accountable to Bees United is weak

· Communication concerning key issues to supporters could be improved significantly”

Since my election I have facilitated the creation and publication of the following:

· The guidelines on matters requiring consultation by the Bees United nominated members of the BFC Ltd board with the Bees United board

· The Bees United board meeting agenda and summarised minutes

· The Bees United Openness Policy and Bees United Board Meeting Attendance Guidelines for those not on the Bees United board

· The review of the relationships between the Bees United and Brentford Football Club boards and Bees United nominated directors

I have been actively involved in the Bees United strategic review, drafting a Bees United communication plan and co-ordinating communication on behalf of Bees United.

All these actions set about strengthening the controls that we have over the running of our Trust and making it more accountable to our members.

These controls are all well and good but the true strength of them is dependent on whether they are used. To date I have witnessed a constant battle with our nominated and elected directors on the Football Club Board to make their work transparent and indeed adopt the principle of accountability to the membership.

This has to change if Bees United is serious about being a supporters led organisation.

I will change this. As a Bees United board member I have delivered on my election commitments whilst achieving successful results at board level in my professional life.

The Club continues to be in a perilous financial position and I want to work to ensure that the Club’s future is safeguarded for future generations. As your representative on the Football Club board I will communicate with you on a regular basis and enable you to be informed about what is actually happening at your Club. By voting for me you will be voting for someone you trust to deliver on their promises.

Thank you :)

I'm looking forward to some open and honest endeavour. I'm sick to the back teeth with the Animal Farm approach. I dont believe that the others are able to deliever this. I'm also amazed that David Merritt could so misunderstand the Barclays Loan. Not sure he is suitable for a Directors positon on that basis alone.

I'm with Brickie on this one.

Gosling gets my vote...:sorted:

I would never attempt to try and sway an individual, and although I hope to win I think the most important thing is a thorough debate of the issues and a range of candidates offering different skills, but I just want to come back on this point.

Please don't think that I would be anything other than completely honest and open were I to win, it's the whole basis of my candidacy.
I have absolutely no involvement with the current set-up and no loyalty to anyone on the board of BFC or BU. I am completely independent and would act as such.

As I said I don't expect people to suddenly switch to backing me, but please don't think I am involved in this election just to get my nose in the trough.

Sorry I didnt mean to imply you wouldnt be honest, poorly worded on my behalf.

Don't the BU guidelines that were issues with the nomination forms prevent you from doing such? I don't have them in front of me so may be wrong.....

No problem.

No offence meant to any of the candidates but I won't be voting this time.

I'm sure all the candidates have thier own strengths and qualities but I feel so badly let down by the last incumbent that my faith in the system of directly elected directors has been shattered. :(

It states that the candidate should 'represent the BU board's current policies and positions on all matters', so I guess in general you are right.

However, I read this to be their overarching goals, maintaining a sensible budget, staying at GP until a new stadium is ready etc.

No one can expect the BU board to have opinions on every minute detail that crops up during a meeting or discussion, that is where my independence can be an advantage.

That is a shame, I also felt let down but decided to be pro-active and put myself forward.

IMHO these three candidates are about as far removed from Graham Hall as is possible.

Please vote and make your voice heard.

There are literally billions of people around the world that would love to participate in a democratic vote, don't be so blase about yours.

Correct. In Australia it is compulsory. It should be here too.

But is there not a box "none of the above" ?
Because if not and you force people to vote for people they do not want, how is that a democracy? :fishing:

An interesting point West Ealing and one that I look forward to debating tomorrow:sorted:
