Team and Club Captain

I think club Captain is more of a PR type role, whereas team captain is the leader on the pitch so as to speak...

Team and Club Captain

We've had separate Club and Team Captains on previous occasions - Ronnie Fenton was Team Captain and Bobby Ross Club Captain for example. Worked OK then it seemed

Team and Club Captain

Good for Nelson as well, say what you like about his keeping de-fish-in-the-seas, but he is one of the more vocal players (re-fan interaction) before, during and after the game, as far as support goes....

Team and Club Captain

So KOC is Captain and also has the best two sponsers in the world. Add that to playing for The Mighty Bees and this lad doesnt really know how lucky he is

Team and Club Captain

Agreed - Kev will make an Excellent Captain on the field. Not so sure about Stuart as Club captain but let's see...

Team and Club Captain

Only the O'Connor one really matters

No other choice as far as I can see

Team and Club Captain

Good decisions all round.

Team and Club Captain

Seeing as neither KOC and Framps have signed contract yet, maybe Leroy has done this to increase their worth in the transfer market????

Team and Club Captain

Kev and Framps i agree with. Nelson our club captain! No, dont agree or understand that one.

Cheers for that:sorted: Nelly will be good at that, he certainly speaks loud and clear on the pitch !! lol

Team and Club Captain

if its a PR 'perception of Brentford as a team' i cant think of anyone worse than Nelson!

Team and Club Captain

The team captain is the important role - and Kevin O'Connor is an excellent choice.

The others are more a recognition of their status at the club.

Why? He'll just have to do some photo calls, shake hands and smile :D

Or to try to influence their thinking?

Team and Club Captain

Wasn't Dobbo Club Captain last season while Newman was Team Captain? Similarly Bates was effectively Club Captain while we had Herman and Powell keeping him out of the first team even before Evo arrived as team Captain.

Goalkeeping (even more that the striker's role) is all about confidence. If this is Leroy standing up publicly and saying he thinks Nels is a good keeper then that can only add to Nelson's confidence on the pitch. A confident keeper will be able to tell his defence what he wants them to clear up and what he's going to come for. A keeper without confidence wont TELL his defence what he wants, but will try to do it all himself - to prove himself to them if you like.

I think it is a sound move.

Team and Club Captain

Good choice Leroy, Kev could make a good leader on the pitch and Nelson's passion and loyalty to the club is being rewarded.

The ladies might disagree with you there.....!

Good luck to him I say, gets too many knockers for my liking...

Team and Club Captain

Nelson, O'Connor and Frampton have been in the team the longest of all we have.

Team and Club Captain

Just one example,

End of last season on the pitch after Swansea game, all our players gutted shake hands with theres. Nelson refuses to except Leon Knights handshake and runs away from him, only for Martin Allen to have to haul him back and make him like a naughty schoolboy. Sore loser. Thats the bloke we got as 'club captain', Terrific!

Team and Club Captain

After a tremendously emotional experience, I don't know how I'd respond either. Suggests in fact just how powerfully disappointed he was. Not classy, but I definitely cut him slack on this.

Can't really see what the Nelson bashers are all about. All keepers (ALL keepers) are going to have mistakes, but on the whole he's been excellent for Brentford.

As far as I could see Dobbo was made captain before he might 'naturally' have been because he was the only reasonably long-serving player we definitely knew we'd keep at the time. When he lost his place in the team it seemed like the cub captain role was created to avoid completely demoting him. Not sure its neccessary now, but after Kev and Framps Nelson must be the longest serving player so no objection to him taking the role.

Team and Club Captain

Remember Leon Knight got Nelson sent off at Swansea.

Team and Club Captain

Im taking his performances as a keeper to one side on this. Regardless of what i think of his ability i dont like the blokes attitude or conduct wearing our jersey.

What about the Doncaster fan ( i think it was) coming on here saying Nelson ruined his little boys day at brentford by swearing and shouting stuff at him at the Ealing road end. Think he was no more than a toddler and was in tears.

Team and Club Captain

O'Connor - 227 apps (36 as sub)
Frampton - 124 apps (15 as sub)
Nelson - 118 apps (1 as sub)

Makes sense as well. We shouldn't have named Newman captain last year in my opinion. I'd have had Kev or Turner doing it full time

Wouldn’t that be a rather stupid and desperate move for a new manager to make? I take the news of these appointments to imply that O’Connor and Frampton are happy to be with us at least until January.

Team and Club Captain

Kev is a good choice for Captain and Framps is a good choice for second in command. I would have chosen these 2 even if they weren't the longest serving players.

Nelson will always get stick as he's the keeper, and it's easy to have a go at the keeper. I think he's done a fantastic job over the last 2 seasons. He can't have been that bad can he, if we managed to finish where we did in the League and get to round 5 of the FA Cup two years running?? He's passionate about the club, and is vocal on the pitch and deserves some kind of recognition for all the effort he has put in.

Good on you Leroy...

Team and Club Captain

If a certain person we dont talk about anymore had stayed we could have had Jamie Smith as Captain. Good choices Leroy - well done!

with wit like that, people on here are really a joy. How can you have a one word abusive reply and still manage to spell that wrong! There have been times Nelson has even made his smark remarks and gestures to Brentford fans behind Brook road, the bloke has that attitude about him that you would maybe put up with if he was actually a good keeper with it but he isnt.

Still as people have said his title seems to mean nothing but will keep him happy i suppose. The main two choices in Kev and Framps were spot on, as there attitudes as players do Brentford proud.

If you're going to complain about someone's spelling, perhaps you should check your own first?

Team and Club Captain

People should cut Nelson slack, he is an excellent shot stopper, particularly reflex saves. At Swansea away we should have been hammered 5/6-1, Nelson pulled out some blinding stops. Agree he has been found wanting on crosses and timing on judgements leaving his area. However tie this in with the news from various sources that Nelson had very little coaching under MA, the main thrust of his training being goal kicking and this becomes understandable. His judgement on crosses etc can be improved by good coaching and growing experience, he is still young.

As for his temperament, I would rather a gobby keeper versus a shy retiring violet, having played "in the sticks myself" for 12 years or so I always took it as a personal afront when I conceded a goal, even if we were winning at the time. It's what motivates keepers.

I spelt it like that in case it got blocked.

Tell you what mate, why don't you go and support another team? Your support for Nelson and our new managers decision to make him club captain is sh1t and in all honesty isn't needed. By the way, I realise you don't spell a word with the digit 1 in.

With a number of our better players gone in the summer, the current squad of players and manager need our support more than ever. Either get behind them or feck off. Again spelt incorrectly to avoid the word getting blocked. :sorted:

Team and Club Captain

So because i dont like our goalkeeper i should go support another team? No thanks. All the people on here who didnt like Andy Woodman and still slag him off now, should they go away and support someone else? Of course not, they were entitled to that opinion as i am. I just thought to respond to my post with the word 'pratt' rather than a reasoned arguement was a bit pathetic.

Anyway here is hoping the goalie on saturday Masters or a new loanee however it may be plays a blinder.

Team and Club Captain

Right, Nelson and Woodman are currently completely comparable.

What's the reasoned argument to your extreme dislike of our keeper? I'll go out on a limb and say that, mistakes and all, Nelson's one of the better and more liked player amongst Brentford fans.

I stand in Brooks Road and my experience is that he's always friendly and responsive to us; have never seen or (despite reading and writing here too, too frequently) read about anything different than that on the GPG. I'll take your word on that.

Think you should get behind him. He's our goalkeeper.

Team and Club Captain

Two schools of thought on this one.

1) Totally committed 100% Brentford and expresses his feelings, winds up the oppo players and fans and is therfore popular when things going well.

2) Cocky, over confident stirrer who isn't a good role model as regularly deliberately goads oppo fans.

I for one think he's a character and getting better as a keeper although nowhere near the finished article and that being regarded as as a senior player will hopefully develop him as a player and a person.

If he wsn't popular with the players I'm sure that LR wouldn't have appointed him as club captain and I suspect that he's also making sure that there is contingency should the appointed team captain and vice not stay.

Still praying it's not to late to find a recognised keeper in time!

.................but wasn't his first club Doncaster.....perhaps he has some feelings against them after they let him drift out of League football??(consider/discuss)

Team and Club Captain

Last nights performance was one of the best I've seen Nels play. Two main possibilities on that one.

1. The Masters threat
2. Leroy's decision paying dividends

Team and Club Captain

Personally I would have had Owusu(when he is fit) as captain, he works hard and is very vocal. Kev leads by example and is still a good choice.

Lloyd's not going to be fit for a couple of months and will need to concentrate on his footbal as soon as he comes back.
