Stewarding At BFC - (plus moribee's latest whinge about smoking)
Following a number of stewarding related issues last season, BIAS, along with Bees United (David Hawes), Jon Gosling (Supporter Director) and Keith Dickens (BFC MD) met last month to discuss stewarding at the club, how it could be improved, and agree a process by which any issues can be dealt with. At the meeting, Keith shared with us a three pronged approach that the club has been developing:
- An increase in the number of BFC employed stewards and reduction of the number of agency from what is close to 50% down to somewhere like 25%. This will both reduce costs and help to improve the overall standard of stewarding. Having more BFC employed Stewards will allow better training, developing stewards with better knowledge of the ground and the overall ethos of the club.
- Encourage the stewards, through training, improved briefing and leadership (from the new Stadium Manager) to steward to the spirit of the club not the letter of the rules. The new, BFC employed, stewards will report to A Hill's replacement who will be responsible for their leadership and overall performance. Advice on training and development is being sought from local clubs that will help both spread the cost burden but also ensure the best training is available.
- Develop a system that will allow people to commend good stewarding, and also report problems. In a similar vein to the Back the Bees txt number, the club want to have a txt system that is available during matchdays that will allow the fans to report both good, and bad, examples of stewarding. It is hoped that this will be developed to allow a broader range of matchday interaction later on.
BIAS welcomes these initiatives and there was a strong consensus that there were additional elements to stewarding that can be taken into account:
- There needs to be a clear escalation process for the stewards to deal with issues on matchdays.
- Dependent upon budget available, agency stewards could be buddied with BFC stewards so that they will always have someone close to them who will know the ground
- Focus in stewards briefing and training that they are there to serve BFC's customers and not just act as police/traffic wardens.(See above re management by the spirit of Brentford rather than rules and regulations).
- BIAS to be advised of any stewarding complaints, and the complainant will be offered the chance to have BIAS representation at any investigation
With regards to the smoking ban, the club have made it clear that this is something that has come down from the Football League regarding matchdays and there is little room to maneuver within "no smoking within the confines of the stadium" given Griffin Park's tight location and ground design. On matchday there will be no smoking allowed anywhere inside the perimeter. This will be applied to everyone; staff, directors and hospitality patrons alike, and no pass outs will be allowed. BFC have taken the advice of the Police, Hounslow Council and the local Residents' Association on this matter. On non matchday events, they may provide a smoking area in the Braemar forecourt although this has not be decided yet. Following the Club's communication via website and Programme at the end of last season, a reminder will be communicated closer to the start of the new season.
The club will be providing specific briefings to stewards in dealing with the introduction of the ban, and BIAS would urge supporters not to confront or challenge stewards who will only be doing the job asked of them.
BIAS will be studying closely the performance of the stewards in the coming season, and would ask anyone who has issues with stewarding to contact both the club and BIAS so that any problems can be followed up on. We trust that each of us will play our part in (sensitively) guiding any likely or accidental offenders to keep Griffin Park smoke free.
