Bees Vs Stockport County Match Reports

Am probably the first back seeing as I live only a 20minute drive from Stockports ground.

Looked like a typical end of season game with nobody really outstanding. Stockport looked a bit sharper but this is probably as they have they playoffs to come whereas our season has obviously petered out into a comfortable mid table finish.

I thought we defended reasonably well, and apart from their goal which was a header from a corner, I don;t think Stockport created a great deal of chances. We should have equalised at the very end with their goalkeeper making a good double save and Shakes missing with a free header from the resulting corner.

A few improvements as discussed in length elsewhere and I think we can be reasonably optimistic about next season.

Sounded seriously boring.
Shakes sounded like the best player to me with his running and tackling, with Osborne solid most of the time.
Smith unlucky towards the end.
Did anyone at the ground fall asleep?

Shakes is at least consistent and has improved slightly, gets more crosses in and very rarely shirks except when it snows. He's also relatively inexpensive. I'd keep him on for definite, but never play him as a striker, because he's not one. Would develop his ball control, as with all the players. Keep them there for 2 hours just stopping a ball and passing it, or passing first touch with someone running onto them until they get it right. Pre-season training needs to be really intensive and focus on the basics.

Why? Do you think any of the top 7 teams this year would have had Ricky Shakes in them? No sentiments - a lot of the players we have are nowhere near good enough.

I aint being funny mate, I run an under thirteens football team.thats what I am doing to them. teaching them how to trap, cross the ball and how to pass the ball. If professional footballers do not know how to do it. Then you cannot be surprised to see we are where we are in the league.

We were shockingly poor IMHO. I left 20 minutes from the end - the lad from Foolam bottled his first 3 tackles and that did it for me. We wouldnt have scored if the game lasted 4 or 5 hours, unbelievably powder puff all over the pitch against a pretty mediocre Stockport X1 ( i gather they rested a few).

Last week i thought a max of 4-5 players were good enough for us for next year, i think that was a generous appraisal.

The word post-match was that AS was as hacked off as the fans so i truly hope and pray he can somehow rid us of all the dross and assemble a team we can have some pride in next season.
We have too many fairies, not enough bottle, not enough players proud to wear our shirt and not enough ability to warrant representing BFC. We need hungry players with desire and commitment who show pride in our badge and respect for the clubs supporters. The present rabble are an embarrassment bar the odd exception.

Good day out apart from the match though :sorted: :wave:

God it was booooring...and I am sick and tired of them pussyfooting around outside the box and not taking a punt on goal, when we can see from sitting directly behind the goal, only the keeper to beat. Time and again approached goal, one pass, then another, then backwards, then backwards...it was just downright frustrating.

Only two possibilties were from Smith, one immediately after another and a clear cut header by Shakes which went way over.

Some lazy play from a few players but KOC battled like a good un

Had a fab day, meeting some more lovely GPG'ers..seeing my fave GPG'ers...and the extremely entertaining journey home with Cockney Man U fans :eek:

Sounded like a generous response to the walkers from the home fans and SCFC (which is also fan owned and has also had its share of tough times). I was sat in one of the home stands with a mate who's a County fan. They were playing a side with a lot of fringe players to let them stake their claim for places in the play-offs and for next season. Goalscorer was a debutant. Pretty dull game with County not really getting going and Bees not looking threatening. Livened up in the last 10 minutes, possibly due to Stockport No 9 coming on and wanting to have a go.

Can't really name a MoM as no-one really looked worthy and no-one really looked especially poor. Ultimately both sides seemed to approach it like a friendly.

Just got home now, was really dull game, nothing to be exicted about at all, shakes wasnt the best player on the pitch worked hard tho, no one stood out on either team.
Just a very boring game.
Walkers got a good reception good to see =]
However by that performance we looked doomed to be mid table team in this league for many seasons to come just wasnt good enough!

Maybe he should look at his skills as a manager.

To even suggest he is looking "for better things" beggars belief if he thinks Shakes is a player. FFS!

Give him to Christmas, then see. I'd rather get in a new decent manager now.

and Walker, Greenholme Etc... What do you make of our last few games?

We cant keep changing managers doesnt help the club finacially or on the pitch!
Give AS time and it might turn out we dont go up next year but maybe we need to stick with him and build our team over some seasons and marched on up!
I know all Brentfords dont deserve the sh*te we are watching and how loyal Brentford fans really are but believe we need to stick by As and Tb

13 points from a possible 45. Let's not fool ourselves - save from Scott's early run, we would have been struggling against relegation this season, big time. There has been nothing in the last two months that suggests we are going to be promotion challengers next season unless there is a massive turn around. Any optimism I might have felt when Scott took over has been replaced by apprehension.

I don't agree.

You tried to play football, was eager coming forward, just lacked a little bit of a killer pass or a positive player who'd have a pop from the edge of the area. When you did, you rattled the post. (Boy that ball moved). Shakes looked a decent player, as did Connell and Poole.

I keep my eye on Glenn Poole as he's notched a fair few this season, but you were better than half the teams that have come to EP this season, so you CAN take heart for next season.

Mid table? I don't think so, you'll be top ten at least I feel

Yes we did, we were met by a Stockport County offical as soon as we got there. They took us into the ground to get some pictures taken in the ground, before seeing if AS and the players had arrived. (they hadnt!!)

We then went into hospitality and had an enjoyable 3 course meal and thank you to PaulUSA for buying us drinks!!

We went onto the pitch just before the game kicked off and a presentation was made. We recieved a standing ovation for all parts of the ground.

Everyone at Stockport County were brilliant and helped us as much as they could. even the stewards allowing to get from one part of the ground to the other.

The only think that did disappoint Pedro and I, was when we went into the Away end about 25 mins to kick off, we had some time to spare before out presentation so we decided so spend it with some fellow fans....we walked into the Away end shouting you reds.....(we wanted to make an impact) and the fans just looked as us wondering what we were doing!
Oh and we were also mentioned in the Stockport programme!

One consolation though. Gillingham got relegated and we have a score to settle with those cheating bastards.Remember how they got our goalie sent off last season?
God, how I hate those pikey ****s. Might get up an hour earlier tommorow just to hate them for an hour longer.

im not saying we played well but what exactly were you hoping for. we have such a limited squad that scott has to keep playing the same players, even if they can't be arsed. we've seen that they CAN play well and from what i'm reading today he's getting rid of brown, pead and ide. nothing less than i'd expect (though i may have been tempted to keep ide). if he had put out the youth team for the last games chances are we would have lost by even more and everyone would be complaining about how our future was looking grim because we couldn't develop our own players. 5 years was, imo, a mistake by the board. my understanding was that he had a contract for next season anyway, so there was no great rush.
he's a rookie manager in his first (half) season, he is GOING to make mistakes. everyone harks on about how results don't come over night and then seems to forget it straight away. next season this league will be even weaker than it was this time. with some good buys we could easily challenge, staying up will of course be the problem.
scott has my backing for next season, and unless more people are prepared to get behind the team (and i know many people are prepared to) GP will become just as hostile for our own players as it will for the opposition.
bar one signing (moses) we have no idea who scott is bringing in, and yet people are already almost writing us off!!! i know things have been bad the last few seasons, but if it wasn't for scott we would probably be playing conference football next season. for that alone he deserves another season in charge imo.
people may say i have rose tinted specs, but i see no point at all in constantly moaning and putting down our players... thats not what i thought 'support' meant

The 5 year deal is a risk, but it does send out the message to any players that the club have invested a lot more faith in the manager and that underperformance is not likely to be immediately blamed on AS- it'll generally now be easier and cheaper to get rid of bad apple players than to take the option of blaming the manager and shifting him.

Hopefully he has done enough to repay their faith that he can develop as a manager over that period. Yesterday we played a team which had done a similar thing (don't know about contract length) and put faith in an ex-player to slowly build them up. I remember the frustration and conflicted opinions around Stockport fans when we last played them in the FA Cup (if only DJ hadn't played so well that day we might have been in the Championship now!) - they wanted to give him a chance but also were worried that the team wasn't much good and he didn't seem to have got enough of an improvement out of them. Similarly, there were initially question marks at Southend over the appointment of Tilson as an untried manager with the club at a low ebb. However, he also demonstrated the talent combined with a feeling for the club and the fans which has transformed their fortunes (even after making the poor decision that Kightly was too small and weak for league football).

If we are a more competitive and consistent club next season with a developing core of talent so that the season after we have the momentum to go up easily then keep moving up (a la Southend, Brighton, Plymouth and any number of other clubs which have done double promotions) AS will have done a good job. If he does that but we get on his back mid way through next season so as to make his position untenable we will only drift downwards.

AB, I get the impression that there are adequate get out clauses so the risk is minimal. Ed already knows this but instead of pointing this out he has chosen a different path :(

I must be first back! God, that was awful. Stockport were cruising and we could not make them pay for it, a lot of long-range pot-shots and that was about it. Comedy defending - yet again - for their goal. Smith was probably the only player to come out with any credit.

Hamer did what he had to do; Sankofa did not contribute much; Bennett seems to have sunk to our level quickly; Osborne made his usual mistakes; Dickson seemed OK until he went off injured; and Charles looked lost. Mousinho was powerful but aimless; W. Brown came on and jogged about; O'Connor was solid at times but held the ball too long and made errors; Smith showed enthusiasm in bursts; Poole seemed content to take long-range shots. Up front, Connell did his flicks and tricks with no result and Shakes was not just a dead weight - he was a sea anchor! I can't believe anyone thinks he is worth a contract, I hope I don't see him again. That miss at the end was unbelieveable and the only cross into the box I remember was straight at the first defender after Connell was screaming at him to hit it early!

I do hope that I will be learning the faces of a new set of players again next season.

Because it was sh1te. I would've sung but a) my sodding feet hurt too much and b) there was little or nothing to get remotely excited about.

I'm normally pretty generous in my assessment of our performances, but I thought it was a dreadful, turgid affair. Seeing how many 1st teamers Stockport had rested, I thought we had a good chance of coming away with a positive result. Instead, we looked completely aimless going forward, desperately missing a target man, lacked any real bite in the midfield, and failed to defend one of the few decent chances that fell to the opposition.

Dreadful. I appreciate that it was an end of season nothing game, but I expect out team to go out and play like it's the play-off final every week, especially when fans have taken the time (a week in my case) and paid the money to travel all that way to watch them off the back of several previous poor performances.

AS invited us (the walkers) onto the Team Coach after the game to meet the players. Being honest, of those that I spoke to, only one seemed genuinely disappointed with the performance they'd turned out and that spoke volumes to me.

Much to do in the close season to turn us from mid table also-rans into anything approaching a promotion chasing side I think. :sad:

Because it was poorly organised and badly managed. Now last season when I sorted it out it made the ****ing nationals thankyou very much!! :thumbs: :wave:

I'd tell you if I knew, but being honest, I have only one working eye and my eyesight is therefore sh1te ! I wouldn't know any of the more recent additions from Adam tbh :) I'm not 100% but I'd hazzard a guess it was Wayne Brown. :scratch:
