Havant & Waterlooville Reports and Reaction

Thank God that is over! The scoreline sounds comfortable but it was far from it. We've avoided the banana skin, for now, but we made it a lot more difficult than it should have been.

Much prefered the look of this line up than some other one's in recent weeks, notably Halls at right back and not central midfield, Dickson at left back and O'Connor bossing the midfield.

Thought H&W were pretty average and showed their league position and didn't really threaten with the pace of their strikers the only worry. We tried to pass the ball first half but the conditions didn't really suit, and like Rochdale we tended to play the ball too long with it constantly running out of play. Our goal came from a mistake but good anticipation from Marv to get his goal.

Second half we really took control and this was when we should have killed them off, Marvin had the beating of his full back all game and Bean and Kev began to boss the midfield. MacDonald lost balance at the critical moment and somehow couldn't score from two yards out but he made up for it by finishing off Elder's flick on. Looked like game over and should have been but for a stupid error from Halls, he often looks too casual in everything he does and this showed. A crazy five minutes followed, somehow th ey didn't equalise and we looked very ragged, Hamer with some outstanding saves, although he didn't know much about some of them.

Typically ITV were busy showing pictures of the crowd:nono: and missed most of our goal, Elder finishing off a breakaway move. In the end we held out and could have scored more but we were very fortunate not to be facing a replay in ten days time.

Some good signs were partnerships developing, Bean and Kev in the middle and Elder and Mac up top. As much as a good footballer Bowditch is, we need Elder in our starting eleven. Tough choice for man of the match, Williams was our biggest threat and roasted his full back all game, Kev looked like his old self making crucial blocks in the middle, and I thought Philips and Dickson slotted back very well after long spells without playing.

Hamer-7- Almost caught out when trying to let the ball run out of play but outstanding saves won us the game.

Halls-6- Looks much happier at right back and got forward well today, must cut out the errors from his game.

Dickson-6- Overlapped Poole well today and had the pace to recover defensively, crucial header at the end.

Bennett-6- Steady as ever but has to stop with the shirtpulling

Philips-7- Considering he's hardly played the last few years it was an excellent performance, strong in the air and some crucial clearances.

Williams-8- MOTM Just wins it for me because he was our outlet ball and a constant threat. Good goal and second half he really turned on the turbo charge speed.

Poole-5- Ok ish but his delivery wasn't his normal standards, rarely plays full 90 mins.

O'Connor- 7- After Rochdale I feared for his future but he excelled today, nice simple passing and broke up play well

Bean-7- Something near his best today, wins headers and got forward more than usual knowing Kev would cover him.

Elder-6- Always a threat but again frustrating, looked overjoyed with his goal, nice to see.

MacDonald-6- Immense work rate and a goalscorers goal, pulling towards the back post. Will have nightmares over that miss.

From a TV perspective I thought we were never in any trouble until we conceded that goal with sloppy defending both from the short corner and the cross. It was always going to happen if they pulled one back that they would have their tails up and apply pressure. Should have had it wrapped up long before but Nathan and the excellent Charlie Mc soon saw to that.

good pro performance

anyone know what Charlies goal celebration was about?

agree.

Havant were nothing really, we got the opener we deserved through Williams, then in the second half, against the wind, we played more through the midfield with KOC doing well, yes Hamer made 3 or 4 terrific saves in about 30 seconds but we deserved the win.

I thought the goalscorer, the no.6, was a good strong CB, one to get hold of maybe?

MA was good on tv, praising the Bees ant the supporters, well done MA.

Not really too bothered all the game...apart from the mad 10 mins or so in the 2nd half...H/W did not have all that much to offer..anyway we are through..and to see Bees win on Tele..well....:sorted:

it happens in every game week in week out, it's up to the ref's to stop this happening by giving penalties, i just hope we get them before the opposition!!

Job done ... we never looked in trouble really against an average Havent side ... no need for a report really as you all saw for yourselves :D

Nice pleasent away day for a change ! :sorted:

Martin Allen got a good reception from the Bees fans as we had to walk past the ITV studio on the way out .. he applauded us and gave us the thumbs up !

If you think that big dallop of wood the no 6 was good then i seriously question your judgement he kicked lumps out of anything that moved:nono::nono::nono:

Watched on TV here in Greece.

First half was just an awful game of football, maybe the conditions ,but we showed not an ounce of creativity.
Good goal from pressing their defender into making a mistake.

Much better second half for 2 reasons...
1. we started to pass the ball on the ground.
2. they had to come at us and left huge gaps all over the field, we had so much more time on the ball.

O'Connor looked good and very poised.
Williams caused them problems.
MacDonald never stopped and looked dangerous
Elder, shocking 1st half but much better in 2nd, took his goal well.

All in all......job done.

Bring on the next banana skin!

Barrow away at the end of November......yuk!

Havant & Waterlooville Reports and Reaction

a big relief...... well done to AS and the team. and those that made the journey.

shame the crowd was so small given their recent cup run - we can blame tv to some extent i suppose but we seem to blame tv every game be it champions league or whatever!

let's hope eastbourne get through so we don't have to travel right up north yet again.

Havant & Waterlooville Reports and Reaction

Didn't they all.

I think we were lucky to escape with any serious injuries, especially Kevin O'Connor in the first half when their bloke was lucky not to have been red carded. Could have broken his leg with that late challenge.

Lots of those, some even worthy of ared...at least the numerous yellow cards cooled them down second half.

Good job well done against tricky oppo.

Just how bad was ITV's coverage, kept missing the play , inlcuding one goal and the after match analysis was very poor.

Havant & Waterlooville Reports and Reaction

Job well done, couple of sticky moments but dont think we looked like losing, took our chances well, Hamer did very well when called upon. Good to see the strikers score and for Williams to get on the scoresheet. Pleased to see Dickson back, cant remember having this many good left sided players!

Good work all round! :sorted:

Thoroughly enjoyable day.
Bring on Eastbourne Borough please, just down the road from home :sorted:

Martin Allen was shaking his head just before we scored, then was seen by my brother to be jumping up and down when we scored our first goal. He loves Brentford FC for sure. He was having his makeup done aswell ready for half time rofl
On the way out after the game, he was putting his thumb up to us all as we walked out and clapping us fans. The bloke is a star.

Havant & Waterlooville Reports and Reaction

Thought Williams had his best game in a Bees shirt :sorted: Great to see KOC back to his best :sorted: Having Dickson back on form at LB , is great to see...making great forward runs...making Poole seem a much quieter player though. Loving Charlie Mac and Elder also had a fairly good game:sorted:

Praise must be given to the ref though. There are many games where Elder is constantly being penalised for the way he jumps for the ball etcetc (hence his many yellow cards) the ref today let the game flow and the only harsh decision I thought was Newtons yellow.

Only "frustrating" player I thought today was Halls :grey: ..keeping the ball too long. fluffing about at the back...and ultimatley putting the ball out for a corner, rather than throw in which lead to the goal

Hamer had a couple of Nelson moments too :eek:lol

Overall relieved..hoping for an Eastbourne away day as my mate lives on Sovereign Harbour, Eastbourne for freebie accomodation :sorted::wave:

Then a nice big Premiership team...away :sorted:

Havant & Waterlooville Reports and Reaction

Job done sums it up really.

Havent were so poor and we never looked in trouble until they got one back.

I thought Elder was embarrassing, missed chances, every ball he passed was either to hard or too soft, only redeemed himself when he got a goal.

McDonald still in my opinion looks the real star in the side.

Great to bank £75k plus £20k prize money, shame the second round wasn't at home..

A poor game all in all with a ball that resembled the weight of a volleyball and conditions that was never going to allow pretty football...

But as the thread starter said ... Job done and thats all that matters.

He did look poor at times and yet ended up with two assists and a goal. We need him in our side.

indeed

martin allen, what a legend, he loves brentford. maddog IN!!

his "working class fans" comment - could imagine most of the gpg spitting their frappacinos out all over their Friends boxed sets at that comment. HOW VERY DARE YOU. :pizzaexpress:

did he actually say it was his best two years of his career cos of the fans. amazing comment given his west ham career. BRILLIANT. our name is on the cup this year, mark my words.

well done everyone who went.
great result.
good draw for round two too.

It made me realise though why I don't stand on Ealing Road...

The average age of the 'singing section' must have been about 14 today and at times was very embarrassing...

Completely agree. After being very impressed with him at Chesterfield I now doubt whether he is worth his place in the side.

Havant & Waterlooville Reports and Reaction

Not a great showing and signs of a lack of confidence but we never really looked like losing.

First thirty minutes was scrappy but for the next 25 minutes or so we bossed it and could have been more than two up. Then when we got the second goal there seemed to be overconfidence and we were very nearly punished. Once the heads were switched back on we got a third and again looked very comfortable.

I feel a bit sorry for Newton as he hasn;t done much wrong to be dropped IMHO but we looked better down the right in an attacking sense today, O'Connor and Bean ran the game for the key middle half hour and Phillips looked competant.

The world was waiting for us to fail and we didn't - let's use this for the next few games and we can put ourselves back in the top six or so.

Im Happy that we are through to Round 2 Crack on Andy and the boys .few points to make though

1.John Halls dont rate him at all ,he looked very very very uneasy with some of his passes, took to much time to decide what he was going to do
2.Williams either needs more match time or is not up to it ,he looks very very rusty
3.Hamer looked Dodge with some of his kicks today
4.Im Still not sure about Bean or Newton

Havant & Waterlooville Reports and Reaction

Said on the tv that both Newton and Wood failed fitness tests early in the morning so not sure about the dropped bit.

King Kev was back! but hopefully its not just a one off. Thought Williams was poor first half - or was that just the wind.........hmmmm. 2nd half he had a blinder so guessing AS had a word.

Elder - sheesh kebab he was ropey today but we still won. Tough one at the moment he has to change - cant miss chances like that in the league or waste passes when we had 4 on 2 near the end!!!

Explain then Mads????

I hardly think someone who is rated as 2nd at the moment in the MOM table and who ran them bloody ragged is rusty and not up to it..if he is rusty and not upto it...what does that make the others then??? :grey:

And without them it would have been even more embarrasing. We looked stupid today. We were completely silent throughout the whole game basically, bar 10 or so "young supporters" singing. It's not anything to do with the age thing, it's to do with the fact no one else is willing to join in. Why don't you stand on the Ealing Road and start chants off yourself? The more the merrier. But vocally today our crowd were embarrasing. :( I moved to the other side of the stand for the second half and Havant were still louder.

On the pitch though, job done :sorted: Bring on the Barrow..

Everyone makes mistakes, however he outshone the vast majority of the team  and on the basis of your comments by individually picking him out for criticism, especially saying he isnt up to it..what does that say for the rest of the team? I totally agree with the rest of your most eloquant points in your post Mr Casual

My opinion differs to yours ....what's the problem with that? The MOM table also reflects that your view is not the majority of peoples views as well......oh sorry.....you are always right aren't you?

Not up until he scored he wasn't, and I was hurling allsorts of abuse at the tv, well what I could with my kids within earshot, but the goal gave him a lot of confidence and he was my second choice as MOM.

Thank you Tw3bee im glad someone else noted that he didnt get out of the blocks straight away. Well done to Willaims for scoring a goal that set us on are way to victory but he is someone that has to prove himself alot more before i rate him as a sucess

Williams couldn't of had a worse first 40mins, but between the 41st and him going off he was excellent

A thoroughly enjoyable day out, only tarnished by us falling asleep for their corner when the game was all ours.

Phillips really impressed me today, I know it as inferior opposition but he did well.

Elder, we need the guy, admittedly some touches were poor, but he is no Ronaldo with the ball at his feet.

Good to have Dickson back, and the midfield two finally controlled the game.

Leaving soon for Barrow :sorted:

to much use of the long ball in first half but much better when its passed..kev played the simple passes today and bean did what he had to do..williams did good shame he got injured....halls just takes to long on the ball......poole was average did not do much....and macdonald worked his socks off and got a typical poachers goal...

Williams was a joke until his goal and then he took off. He seems to be a confidence player and his level seemed to zoom, he still doesn't know when to cross and he shouldn't really need that confidence boost. He had a very good 20 minutes and lets hope he has a good 90 this weekend.
