NFL playoff fantasy game

The 12 NFL playoff teams are now known. Full graphic details on www.nfl.com

8 teams start in the Wild-Card Round, this weekend. If they win that they will play on the road in subsequent rounds. These teams have to win 4 games to become the Superbowl champions.

4 teams (New York Giants, Tennessee, Carolina, Pittsburgh) have a bye in the Wild-Card Round. They have a week off, and then play their first game at home to the 4 wild-card winners. These teams have to win 3 games to become the Superbowl champions.

The New York Giants and Tennessee will play their second game at home as well, if they get through.

So how about a game of fantasy NFL playoffs? It's pretty simple, you just have to pick a team of 7 players, who you keep throughout the playoffs. They will earn points based on their game statistics.

1) Your team Choose a team of 7 players. You need the following positions:

1 quarter back (QB)
2 running backs (RB)
2 wide receivers (WR)
1 tight end (TE) fnaar! fnaar!
1 kicker (K)

Here's the interesting part - you can select a maximum of 2 players from any playoff team. There's loads of player stats on www.nfl.com to help you.

Post your team here, or pm it to me if you want it to stay secret. You can change your team as often as you like, until the deadline. Then it will be frozen until the end of the Superbowl. If a player loses in the first round, that's just tough.

2) Deadlines There are 2 deadlines.

Deadline 1 is 30 minutes before the first wild-card game. (Saturday 3rd, 21:00 GMT, 16:00 EST) If you want to pick players who are involved in the Wild-Card Round you must enter those players by deadline 1. That part of your team will be frozen at this point (even if they don't actually play). The rest of your team can be left as "TBD" at this point since we won't yet know the schedule for the following round.
eg, at deadline 1 you could enter this team: RB Peterson (Minnesota), all other players TBD.

Deadline 2 is 30 minutes before the first game in the Divisional Round. (Saturday 10th, time TBA) This is the final deadline. Players who weren't frozen at deadline 1 can be changed until this point.

3) Scoring Points are scored as follows: (it's the points scoring system of the nfl-uk.com fantasy game)

- Players score the points that they score in the actual game.
6 points for a TD
2 points for a 2 point conversion
1 point for a "point after" conversion kick
3 points for a field goal kick

Note 1 - the receiver scores the points for passing touchdowns and conversions, not the thrower
Note 2 - touchdowns scored on kick and punt returns also count

- Players score 1 point for every 10 yards of rushing, and 1 point for every 10 yards of receiving during the game.

Note 1 - if a player rushes for 35 yards and receives for 35 yards in a game, that counts as 6 points, not 7.
Note 2 - yardage from kick and punt returns do not count.

- Players (usually quarter backs) score 1 point for every 30 yards of passing, and 3 points for each touchdown pass.

- If a game goes to overtime, players continue to accumulate points.

I will calculate everyone's scores at the end of each playoff round (based on the game stats on www.nfl.com) and post them on here. Though of course you should check them yourself.

4) The prize What? Eternal glory and the title "over-padded jock-meister of the grapevine" not enough for you? I'll think of something.

Have I forgotten anything? I'll post my team tomorrow.

OK, looks like there's at least 4 of us in, so I know I'm not talking to myself.

My computer has been chuntering away overnight, and it confidently informs me that the Superbowl will be contested between Indianapolis and Atlanta. So my team is:

Las Abejas Tontas
QB - Peyton Manning (IND)
RB - Michael Turner (ATL)
WR - Roddy White (ATL)
TE - Dallas Clark (IND)
The other 3 positions are deferred until next week.

So post your team name ASAP to show interest.
Then get your team to me by this Saturday if you want to include wild-card players.
Or leave it till Saturday 10 if you're only going to pick players from the top 4 seeds.

NFL playoff fantasy game

I'll sort my team out later on this evening

NFL playoff fantasy game

I'll follow your strategy of deffering some players

My Team

Bees United
QB - Peyton Manning (IND)
TE - Dallas Clark (IND)

I had my fantasy last night with the Dalas Cowboya cheeleaders. (Well, the two blondes anyway)

 Have you thought about getting your own cowgirl outfit? Then you can get your "dates" to dress up in it.

I thought in the NFLUK game QBs got 3 points for a passing touchdown. You've also missed off the team defense (with additional points for sacks & turnovers). If you include those I might be interested in putting in the following:

QB P. Manning (IND)
RB A. Peterson (MIN)
RB D. Williams (CAR)
WR S. Smith (CAR)
WR R. White (ATL)
TE A. Fasano (MIA)
K D. Carpenter (MIA)
DEF Indianapolis

It's up there, in pretty purple.

I left out the team defence because my score estimates never matched the actual scores given by nfl-uk. I think it's because on nfl.com stats it's not clear how many fumbles were recovered by the defence.

Anyway, your strategy is clear enough. You've picked Miami and Minnesota players to lull us all into thinking you're bonkers, then you're going to change them for Giants and Tennessee players just before the deadline.

Tennessee will be one and done :sorted: The Giants are a team rather than a few superstars with an able supporting cast. I suppose Brandon Jacobs could be a possible but he's part of a 3 man RB platoon who share carries and has been banged up towards the end of the season.

The teams that will win on the road this week will be Indianapolis & Atlanta so I should hopefully have a full roster of players competing for me in the divisional round.

:nono: Only 3 teams in. Maybe my dazzling graphics will inspire the rest of you.

London Otters have players from 7 different teams, and all playing in the Wild-Card round! Of course that means at least 3 of them will be out by Monday.

The teams can be viewed here. Sadly it looks better in IE. Teams can still be entered or changed until Saturday's deadline though.

I'll update the scores at the end of every game.

The most popular player is Peyton Manning. (5 out of 7 teams)
The most popular team is Indianapolis. (11 picks, 3 different players)
The least popular team is Baltimore. (bugger all picks)

You make a good point, but I based my team on the NFL.com playoff challenge team I entered! Maybe I will make changes now I see I cannot make any changes after the Wildcard round!

If anybody else is playing the above game and wishes to enter a "buddy group" (ie a minileague) then pm your email address and I'll invite your team!

I didn't enter nfl.com fantasy because of their stipulation about being a US or Canadian resident. But if that's not a problem, why the hell am I going to this trouble to organise a league here?

pm on it's way.

They dont care, but you won't get a prize if you win!

NFL playoff fantasy game

OK, I'm buddied up. It looks like a good game.

I'm a bit confused about the rules though. The rules say you can make 8 changes throughout the playoffs, but Michael Fabiano gives a different definition of that rule.

Also, there's a squad salary limit but it's not clear if you should hold some money back for your 2nd round purchases. We can't see the prices of the "bye" team players yet. If, say, LeRon McClain loses to Miami, and I want to swap him for Chris Johnson, I may have to sell 2 other players to balance the books.

I'm only a poor abeja tonta.

Selections don't reflect who I think will be contesting the Superbowl so God knows why i'm picking them ;)

QB Rivers (SD)
RB Tomlinson (SD)
RB TBD
WR TBD
WR TBD
TE TBD
K TBD

Edited before posting .. Just realised there's no point in including those players not playing in the Wild Card Games

Good game so far, after a bright Arizona start, it looks like Atlanta are settling and Matt Ryan is having a decent game after a shaky start.

NFL playoff fantasy game

Great win for the Cardinals, their defense was awesome, stuffed Michael Turner and also forcing Matt Ryan to make some critical mistakes. However Boldin's pulled a hamstring so I do not rate their chances next week. Going back to the running game was key Edgerrin James had a decent game.

NFL playoff fantasy game

Double pah! Stay up till 5:30am, then Indianapolis give away 25 yards of penalties on the first drive of overtime.

First day and I'm already down to 3 players.

Table updated

NFL playoff fantasy game

SC looks in a good position in the table with all 7 players left .. but not for Pixie with 3 left :D

Yes the mighty Pixelator's hopes for a double look bleak.

I wonder if Darren Sproles is worth picking, his performance was amazing and LT is pretty banged up.

NFL playoff fantasy game

My nfl.com challenge is going even worse. I lost all 6 of my starters yesterday, with just McClain and the Eagles D to come today. Porgey had 2 winners out of 4 starters.

NFL playoff fantasy game

Well, one gamble paid off but the gamble on LT didn't work out. Why oh why didn't I choose Sproles. Still, here's hoping LT still plays some part in the rest of the action.

NFL playoff fantasy game

Table updated, and it's not pretty viewing for most of us. Between us, 25 of 28 starters have lost. Only SC's 2 Chargers and either Peterson or Westbrook go through to the next round.

As for Anthony Fasano, did he forget his boots?

NFL playoff fantasy game

Table updated with all the wild-card games. And here's the summary:

standings.gif

Simon W looks to be in the strongest position, but I think the favourite would be anyone who enters with a new team for the divisional round.

Star player in our league was Brian Westbrook with 17 points and still in the playoffs. In fact he was the only player who was worth picking.

Star player who no-one picked was Darren Sproles with 26 points and still in.

Intertesting match ups for the Divisional playoffs

Eagles@Giants - you would have to favour the Giants but Westbrook does own the giants so he could have a big game

Cardinals@Panthers - Probably a high scoring thriller, I think the Panthers would edge this one - I expect most people to have Panthers players in their team

Ravens@Titans - Will be an ugly game, I have a feeling for the Ravens here, their Defense is just awesome. Not sure anyone is fantasy value in this game to be honest

Chargers@Steelers - I wonder how Pittsburgh will fare if Big Ben is not 100%. Could be an upset in this game. Fantasy wise, Hines Ward might not be a bad bet if you think Pittsburgh are superbowl bound. I'm backing San Diego to cause another upset.

Well, just in case I forget to update this later in week, here's my initital selections so at least i'll have a full roster. Will try and remember to update later if changes needed

QB Rivers (SD)
RB Tomlinson (SD)
RB de Angelo Williams (CAR)
WR S Smith (CAR)
WR D Mason (BAL)
TE Boss (NYG)
K Carney (NYG)

I've upgraded Philip Rivers from 7 points to 8. (Hadn't spotted his 13 yards rushing.) I've downgraded Reggie Wayne from 19 points to 18 (129 yards, 1 TD). This is already reflected in the table above.

It was 5:30am when I did the original calcs.

Final deadline is Saturday, 9:00pm GMT. You can fill out your rosters, and you can change any players from NYG, CAR, TEN and PIT. Or you can enter a brand new team if you don't have one already.

The most popular players in this round are:
DeAngelo Williams - in 7 teams
Steve Smith - in 6 teams (and maybe 7 if I have a last minute panic)

WR - Derick Mason (BAL)
K - Matt Stover (BAL)

Jam Jar, you're gonna have to lose one of your Baltimore players... Only 2 per team.
