Do you feel confident for new season?

Hey guys, how do you feel about the new season with Scottys signings?

I haven't been able to see the Bees yet but so long as the rain keeps off,a little trip to Staines tonight woud be nice.

I'd like to know in general,do we have a chance of the playoffs or even better.

After our dismal showing in the World Cup,it feels abit flat.

But,like the last 60 years of following the Bees,I live in hope.

Impossible to say at this stage. IMHO it all depends what AS still has up his sleeve. If we see a really exciting striker come in I think we are up and around the p/o's - if this doesn't come off, I think we will be anywhere between 7th - 12th

I pretty much agree with that - although I think we need a couple more on top of the striker (so to speak).

Ideally yes, but for me we can muddle along with what we have and a proven goalscorer could see us make that jump of 5 or places updwards. As much as I love the fact that Nicky Forster is back (unless he really does the business of course :sorted:) our current firepower is just not strong enough to go that bit further.

We haven't got enough for a decent season as we speak but there is no way we have stopped recruiting yet. For that reason I am confident but if nowt changes in the next two weeks I will then be pooing it a bit.

if pre seaon to go by then no not at all but on paper yes!

im a realist and if we finish higher than last season we have had a good season, not thinking play offs or promotion untill it looks like happening or possible.

I agree. My only concern is that it seems like we're throwing a lot more budget in this season, and that means there needs to be a certain level of improvement to justify the extra spend. But, as NB says, I'll wait and see where we are in a few weeks.

And, as you say, an extra striker is definitely the most important.

Do you feel confident for new season?

yes, but i'm a happy-go-lucky kinda guy.
by the time i finally get to a game (Sept 5th), we should know which end of the table will concern us most. but given Scotty's record so far, i imagine we'll be looking upwards.

Ah ha! See! You too can join the Worry Club!!!

defintley not got the fire power! and we need a midfielder who will get us 10 goals also.

i do find it strange how AS was a striker although not a great one, struggles to spot a decent 20 goals a season striker!

I went to the Fulham and Wycombe games. Fulham were worlds apart from us so it was hard to judge. Wycombe on the other hand looked like an average league 2 team, nice and neat in midfield, decent in defence, Mark Phillips dealt with our strikers very easily, but they didn't have much up front although Betsy scored a cracker.

Unless we can find a goalscorer I cannot see us doing as well as last year as the quality of goalkeeper and central defender has gone down.

Don't want to rubbish any player especially as the season hasn't even begun but I think AS has made a couple maybe not bad, but poor signings in Lee and McCracken.

The main concern IMO is we just don't look like scoring. Now I know people are saying you shouldn't read too much into pre-season friendlies but we scored once in 3 matches and that was a Hunt free kick.

I don't think we'll be relegation fodder but I just cannot see this squad taking us higher than last season......time will tell ?

Do you feel confident for new season?

Far too early to say, friendlies mean nothing in terms of likely league results.

AS's summer signings look OK to me, Spillane could be a very decent signing and the others quite strong for this division. Early suggestions that MaCraken could be another Mackie are looking distant.

Forster is the interesting one, will he have a golden indian summer to his career or will he be loaned out by Xmas , could be either.

i was confident til i watched that Chesney clip of his saves last season earlier on youtube - he must have saved us about 50 points!!

That's a bit harsh Stoney!
I'm sure he can spot them, it's more a question of availability. A bit like women...all the decent ones are taken ;)

Charlie Mac hasn't exactly been a disappointment.

hahah ghost!

gulidford, hardly been amazing either, i dont think charlie mac is a bad player but not someone id write home about, he isnt a 20 goals a season and the only regular played striker we have had in AS reign. im knocking AS like ghost says a decent striker is hard to come by, but they are out there!

overall we struggle to score and need a 20+ goals a season player and a midfielder who gets 10+ a seaon and for our wingers to be getting more to compared to last season.. FACT

ie for midfield
sam wood 2 goals
weston 8
hunt 3
o'connor 4
saunders 1

thats not good enough for promotion

We will do well I think and we can hope for the play offs but probably two or three quality players off that at the moment but forgetting loans from last season have we improved on the permanent signings this year?
Lee for Bull= Jury out but I should think so.
Woodman for Dickson= No but it was never going to happen and looks steady enough.
McCracken for Phillips= Again its make your own mind up time personally I think they probably both the same standard.
Spillane for Foster= Certainly looks good on the ball and gets forward big improvement.
Hudson for Taylor= Aint got a clue but you hope so
Forster for Strevens= Yes looks sharp and as proven at Brighton can still score goals even at 36.

So overall there probably is an improvement but at the moment most likely not good enough for the play offs but that can be sorted out in the next couple weeks.

You're a tough man to please! ;)
Charlie has done amazingly well to score the amount of goals he has done. His shoulder injury stopped him imo breaking the 20 mark in the championship season. Then to come back from that and score quite a few goals (I can't think how many off the top of my head) in a higher league, along with some of the tactics we were employing and the lack of a consistent strike partner.
Charlie has been outstanding if you ask me.

Mac and forster both got 17 last season.

:sorted: Your right seems lot more, so with that I expect better than 9th.

mate i think he has done well just dont think he is that good, for one he cant take a pen! yeh he needs someone up there with him and the service. if we went up char mac wouldnt make the grade!

just cant se him giving 20+ for a promotion push. hope im wrong! just my view

Where to start with this.

Mac has been an outstanding player for us and he would have got 20 plus without injury.
He got 17 as it was i think.

15 in 39 +1 league games

can you honestly say he would have got another 10 or so in the 7 games he missed?

not saying he isnt good nick just saying we need a 20+ goal scorer. or saying to get rid of him or anything.

every club needs a 20+ close to 30 for them to have a chance of promotion along with a strike partner who gets the goals that mac does, along with a good midfield who get you goals!

Do you feel confident for new season?

The thing I think we are missing is a stand out player we have some good players but do we have that stand out player that is one of the best in the division we had Dickson last year but he was a defender and defenders dont get the spotlight but what player going forward can we say everyone is this division would love to have just look at other teams who are up there which is where we want to be have those players that change games Southampton have Lambert and Lallana and Barnard, Huddersfield have Rhodes, Novak, Roberts, Pilkington. Peterborough have Boyd, Mclean and Smith. Swindon have Austin and other teams have stand players and that is what I feel we are missing or am I wrong?

thats what i mean to lol well done chopper!

Do you feel confident for new season?

overall we struggle to score and need a 20+ goals a season player

15 league goals and above last season in League One:

Rickie Lambert 30
Billy Paynter 26
Grant Holt 24
Lee Barnard 24
Jermaine Beckford 23
Steve Morison 21
Charlie Austin 20
Jordan Rhodes 18
Chris Martin 17
Ian Harte 16
Adam Lallana 15
Charlie MacDonald 15
Luciano Becchio 15

Those in bold played for Norwich, Leeds, Southampton or Huddersfield (who imho were right up there in terms of spending power). I don't think we should write the season off just because we can't quite compete for spending with the very richest clubs in the division. So I guess Scott should be looking for a good journeyman like Paynter who can score well in a good side. It it crazy to suggest that Forster might be that player? Or he should be looking for non-league gems like Morison and Austin. Which I'm sure he is. Maybe the problem is those players never come to Brentford. Except DJ Campbell of course.

So yes, if Scott can't make a signing as good as DJ in the next fortnight then we should bin him...

I second that. Some people say he saved us 10 points - ISB is closer.

Always confident at the start of a new season or I wouldn't bother coming.

We would probably have to break the bank to get a 20 goal+ striker. Someone like Pitman at Bournemouth or Brodie at York or Le Fondre at Chesterfield.

Any that are out of contract can take their pick as to where they want to go.

There's only one thing for it. Get yourself down to MB's office Andy!

Do you feel confident for new season?

we will finish 6th "FACT".

Do you feel confident for new season?

I think either Mac or Forster will get 20+ goals this season, assuming no serious injuries come along. If Forster gets alot of games I think people may be underestimateing him, I keep reading "if we had a proven goalscorer", Forster is that!

Having said that I agree that to challenge for the top two we would need to add a 30ish goal striker (Holt, Beckford, Lambert) to supplement Forster/Mac (Becchio, Austin, Martin).

Do you feel confident for new season?

Will we go up through the Play Offs?

we will win the first leg of the play off semi final 3-1 but at this stage it is too far away for me to predict beyond that i'm afraid.

If Forster and Mac can get nearly 20 goals each then thats not bad.

Do you feel confident for new season?

When was the last time we had a player that scored 20+ a season?

Exactly. MA twice got us into the play-offs without a 20+ goal striker (although DJ might have got there :( ) and we won League Two without one.

Other than that I'm not sure we've had one since Nicky Forster in 94/95. Did Owusu ever break the 20 goal mark?

We need another forward but I'm more concerned about the midfield.

Do you feel confident for new season?

Firstly I don't think we're done in the transfer market quite yet. Secondly I'll wait until we're 10 games into the season. Anything prior to that is guesswork. Uneducated or educted.

Do you feel confident for new season?

In both 98/99 and 01/02 I believe.

Burgess may even have got 20 in 01/02.

Before that, it was Asaba in 1997 - in fact from 91/92 to 96/97 we had at least one player with 20+ every year apart from 95/96 IIRC.

Do you feel confident for new season?

AS will get us in the top 6 by the end of the season, would love it, would absolutely love it if we won at Wembley

Owusu got 25 in all comps in 98/99 and 22 in 01/02. Burgess got 18 in 01/02.

Top 6 is on the cards.I am confident :)

I really do feel that one good striker and a decent midfielder can really swing our season. But certainly without the mythical 20-goal man, we will be rather ordinary i fear. Probably mid-table, maybe slightly lower than 9th, say, in the 12th-15th area.

I really don't get why you think we would finish lower than last year in a weaker division with a better squad.
