Rico had an operation to fix his shoulder shortly after joining and was out for most of the season. If I recall correctly the options were bite the bullet and have the op or carry on with a known weakness that would keep on recurring

Where did you read that he was released? I assumed he hasn't signed a new contract or we made an offer, although based on Neil MacFarlane's description it does sound like a bit of a punt and dependent largely on how much development is achievable on top of his speed and physical presence.
