Suprised this thread doesn't exist but I suspect there will be a few discussions over the next couple of weeks.

It will be a strange games with no spectators and I do feel somewhat sorry for the Japanese securing such an event and then Covid arrives. It may be a year late but on balance I am glad it is going ahead.

Have to say I am a little underwhelmed by the Opening Ceremony so far.

The Media always go on about one big story pre games

Then once the sports get going we can enjoy two weeks and three weekends of wall to wall sport

2016 was Zika virus
2012 was G4S Security issues
2004 was Stadiums still being built

2020 is obviously positive covid

Are all events not available on the red button?
Rubbish if not. I want to watch the competitions, not have an event cut off as soon as there is not a team GB athlete, so Clare Balding can talk to a PE teacher and man down the village pub about one of the athletes.

The guy who led out Tonga (I think it was) looked pretty 'buff' and was glistening in coconut oil apparently. Certainly caught my partner's eye!

Blimey I remember the last Tokyo Olmpics. Live via satellite. Lynn Davis & Mary Rand - I think. Colour coverage but we only had black and white at home. The theme music was: Dang - Dang - Da - Dang - Dang!

Honestly can’t imagine watching any of this. Absolutely Shouldn’t be happening, which is not the athletes fault. But That significant percentages of the athletes aren’t vaccinated and they’re in a country where single digit vaccinations exist make it impossible for me to enjoy it.

C'mon, the human pictogram was genius!
Yea, I wrote the previous comment just as the athletes were finishing coming in so it was more about what went before. There were a couple of high points...some was just painfully slow.

In hindsight I appreciate they went less for big spactacle and more small and intimate, for obvious reasons.

The athletes procession is inherently dull. Needed more Samurai, more ninjas.

It's not their fault they haven't got a global icon, but the reveal of Nyomi Ozaka at the end was a bit anticlimactic.

Now, if she had had to fight Godzilla for the right to light the flame...

Must admit that I was hoping Jackie Chan would make an appearance.

Paul Nihill was the walker, but it was a silver. Heard an obituary for him a few months back
Just checked this on wiki. It was Ken Matthews that I was trying to remember - he won gold in the 20 km walk, with Nihill's silver coming in the 50 km walk.

It will be interesting to see how many record times and personal bests are achieved in the athletics. You might expect the lack of competition over the last 18 months would affect performance but drug testing regimes have fallen back significantly since the pandemic started and already in the events leading up to the games there have been some surprising results.

Japanese gymnast Uchimura was absolutely amazing on the high bar until he lost his grip on the bar and flew off. No crowd but still the obvious disappointment was a shame for the hosts.
And as that was his only apparatus his Olympics are over

I was watching that too. He was incredible. So sad to end what might be his last games that way.

.. a little village in Herefordshire
Such a shame for all these young competitors having to experience no crowds and the wearing of masks for medal presentations and pics

.. on a plus note .. waking up to Sam Quek on the BBC in the mornings will be nice 🙂

Why are there no top 3 leaders names and flags in the road race? 🤦‍♂️

Just as the race get interesting...lets cut away and go over to Mark Cavendish :banghead:
It was straight back to Eurosport at that point! Two weeks of the BBC x Hello! coverage of the Olympics to come.

But ... What a race. So pleased for Carapaz, who often attacks but can't make it stick. A great time to win your first one day race.

Must admit, I hadn’t realised that BBC had skimped on the rights to such an extent (should have read Judio’s post #7 above). No more than two sports live at any one time, overlaid with BBC’s bizarre mix of populism and wokery. So you can’t even retreat to the peace and quiet of the red button.

Imagine when, for example, velodrome cycling, swimming and gymnastics are all on at the same time (in the real world). We’ll have overlays of featurettes with soccer players doing keepy uppy vs. Max Whitlock (that actually happened this morning) or Jason Kenny changing nappies, while the actual sport gets recorded.

I’m enjoying Brazil vs. Netherlands on Eurosport
Two well organised sides, with some useful players.
Unfortunately, the commentary is from the swimming qualifying 😆🤷‍♂️
