4-5-1 For Away Games??

As an exile, I wasn't at the game las t Saturday, but the tactical change to 4-5-1, with the extra man in midfield seemingly kept one of the top sides in the division pretty much at arms' length on their own patch. This resulted in us securing a rare away win & from memory by a 2 goal margin for the first time this season.

So who thinks that Martin Allen should or will keep this formation for future away games, starting in Bos'lem at Port Vale on Saturday?

I wouldn't mind against stronger teams but maybe with Hargreaves out on the left and Tabb as the extra man in midfield alongside Talbot and Hutch.

I suspect that he'll try it for some away games, depending on the opposition and how they play, but I'd be surprised if he stuck rigidly to it for all away games. Only time will tell, but it certainly worked at Luton, so I'm sure we'll see it again in view of our overall disappointing record away from GP.

It was painful to watch for a while and to be fair it was almost as if it bored the pants off Luton. I know that was the plan but they are wobbling and seemed pretty low on confidence, nothing stuck up front and against a better team with a bit of confidence we could be "wallied" before we start playing. However I liked Ben May on the wing as he won all the aerial stuff and showed some nifty footwork.

No thanks!! It's pretty much been our tactic all season away from home to sit back and try and frustrate teams and grab the odd goal and to be honest, Luton is pretty much the first time it's worked at all. And what would have happened had Howard's goal been allowed in the first half??

The team and tactics at Luton was pretty much dictated by the players available but I'd like to see us be a bit more positive away from home than we have been so far this season. We've proved at home we can be more than a match for anyone when we play well so I don't see why we have to give teams so much respect away from home..

I was going to agree with the others,but now I wont .Luton was one of the only times it has worked away from home .I think we had no option as you say .I hope we can get a loanee to replace Tiger now Steptoes been farmed out to get some league experience

I think it has it's merits, but if you concede an early goal it becomes useless.

Playing 3 strikers and getting them to switch was certainly good to see, Burton dropping off was very dangerous.

However I don't think the 3 central midfielders will work every week, and we do lack creativity from the middle of the pitch.

I'm always in favour of a horses for courses approach, and I don't think our Port Vale pose the same challenge.

From where I was, it looked like it was 4-5-1 for some of the match, but at other times was 4-4-2 and even 4-3-3.

Against Luton, this switching tactic seemed to be working, and I would like to see more of it.

But of course, it could confuse us as much as it confuses the enemy...

From the training pitch...MA had said, so hopefully they are all aware. Switching can be a option if it's not working or we need a goal, keeps the other team guessing, the element of surpise?!
