I'm not sure about the penny dropping. Whenever I've watched his effort has been fine, and in most games so has his performance. He makes space well and is creative. For me the only question mark is over his physicality and pace. Reading the Swindon forum, their fans were impressed. I think he could be a player who takes a bit longer to develop physically compared with some others.

I don't think that's fair? Never seen any doubts about his commitment or work-rate. Has trained regularly with the first team I think..

Didn’t really mean to infer that. More that time is starting to run out and he needs to get noticed. We’ve all seen decent Bs get cut at the end of their time.

A chap that I work with who is a Swindon fan was very impressed with him on Saturday. Although they lost he had an assist and generally was at the centre of most good things that Swindon produced apparently.

Loans are so difficult. It sounds like Swindon are trying to play in a similar way to us this season (which I don’t think was the case last year). Sounds like they’re a bit lightweight in midfield though so that could change after a poor run of results which would obviously impact on Gilbert. Their defending for Vales second goal was laughable..

Interesting on the BBC he played as part of a front two yesterday from the start. Guess it didn't work at he was one a double substitute on 54 minutes at 1-0 down. Swindon then scored on 57 minutes, and went on to win 3-1.

Just looked at the Swindon forum. One fan criticised his performance yesterday and another replied "That was his poorest game but he has been very good lately. I think we need to remember this is his first ever experience of professional football at 1st team level. He has made a bigger impact than many players have after 4 league games for me."
Young players like him and Pressley can take a while to adapt to real competitive football. We'll be able to make a better judgement on their progress at the end of the season.

Hopefully a good experience for him, although he seemed to play more minutes at the beginning of his loan spell. Fans seemed to like him too. Then it all dropped off...
Crucial that he gets more minutes for his development so I suppose he'll either go out on loan or permanently at some point this window

Shame it didn't quite work out for him there. Seemed to follow a very similar path to recent B team loans. Started well and impressed but then faded and dropped out of the team when results weren't really going their way.
Reading Gerrard’s comments Villa seem to be having similar issues with their youngsters and have recalled a few.

I had heard that Gilbert was well liked by the coaching staff at Brentford and apparently would have been more involved in first team games in the Championship had it not been for the outstanding tribunal decision for compensation due to WBA.
He still made the bench a good number of times and played in the FA Cup though so you thought he might kick on this year. I was therefore surprised to see him loaned out as low as L2. Even more so to see him struggle to make an impact.
I believe his contract is up in the summer, although there is a one year option. Be interesting to see what happens next.
