That goal he scored was one of the great moments at GP, I am not sure it mattered so much for our great escape in the end but at the time we thought it did.

Er...what do you mean. It kept us up!

I still count it as the goal that kept us up, because at the time it did.

I think we'd have stayed up anyway even if we'd lost as results went our way but I recall it being brilliant scenes behind the goal at brook rd when it went in....

Iirc he did a lovely flick of the ball with the outside of his foot to take him past the defender before slotting it home, and yes Brook Road was absolute limbs

no footage, though? it's strange, some of that season seems to be "missing" (i'd love to get Tabby's goal at Barnsley that year too)

yes Chorlton Bee, lovely little touch to get through, and a beautiful finish

and there's some mis-remembering here - i am 1000% (ok 99%) sure that our fate was in our own hands, a win guaranteed our survival, so the relief when it went in was real. however, in any case, it turned out that if we'd lost we'd have been alright anyway.

ruislip bee appears determined to live in an alternative universe to me, cos i can assure i was not "flat" after - i'm pretty sure i drank until i fell over that night, with the majority of that at the Griffin in great scenes :sorted: great celebrations of a great team achievement

I’m sure I’ve got a DVD somewhere of this. (I think it was put on dvd?!) Surprised it’s not on you tube. Can’t see it on any BFC site either.

indeed. i tried asking about the tabby goal before, got no reply. we definitely put the following season (MA's first full season) on DVD, "infamously" (it's the DVD with Martin's frequent comments) - i have that somewhere, but not the prior season (the Great Escape)

You are correct, we ended three points ahead of fourth from bottom but we had a much better goal difference, so we could have lost and stayed up but of course we did not know that at the time...

Yep, was actually a really classy goal. The image of that touch with the outside of his boot is as clear as day in my head and the finish

What a young star we had in our hands until McShane ended all his dreams.

Got quite emotional watching that.

Might not got to go inside GP again.

Was right in front of that McShane assault, one of the worst tackles I ever witnessed at GP. I cant recall if he got a red though.

When lockdown rules allow, Alex now turns out for Dagenham United in the Essex (Saturday) Alliance League.

That means @Simon W lost his phone celebrating that goal 17 years ago today, I found it, returned it to him and that was how we met face to face for the first time.

I remember being right behind Rhodes on the New Road and watched it all the way in. What a day. What an end to the season. The Great Escape!
That first touch with the outside of his foot was something, never forget that.
