Maybe I have it all wrong. Maybe the plan is now simply to f*** about in the first half and then turn up in the second with the sucker blow. Has Thomas gone to school on the Rumble in the Jungle?
If it was Rumble in the Jungle at the BCS, it was most certainly 'Rope-a-Dope' for Bristol City today.

I do, always have, and I don't want to see Norgaard playing instead of him, CN and VJ please on Wednesday, get him forward and let him unleash
more of those shots.

I reckon Peter Gilham was sneaked inside before half time to tamper with the tea in both changing rooms.

Can I just get a few things off my chest, quickly...
  1. Thomas, please give your team talk before the first half, not the second.
  2. David, I think you might have misheard Thomas in post-match press conferences. He said if we are going to concede first, better to do it early so we have all match to catch up. This was not an instruction to get the opening goal out of the way as early as possible.
  3. Sergi, pressing high up the pitch does not mean fouling high up the pitch. Wise up!
Ah, that's better!

To turn this on its head, I'd say if I'm a Stoke fan, I'm going to be pretty pissed off with that. "We" bossed the first half, having worked out how to play against Brentford last season. Brentford were poor and ended up expending more energy than us chasing their own tales in the end. So why we faded so dramatically after only 45 minutes, I have absolutely no idea.

And from our perspective. Why the fk does it take 45 minutes to start playing? It's not as if we don't know what's coming. Surely we should be able to change it up quicker than that once we see what Stoke are doing. Sorry for all the whinging. It's not normally my way. It's just that having made it this far through the pandemic, and having queued up for the vaccine last Monday, it would be a real shame to have to peg out with heart failure on a Saturday afternoon.

Brilliant second half though. Another goal for Ivan. Another assist for Bryan. And a thunderbolt from Vitaly which somehow went in shaped like a dipping volley despite being despatched from the deck. Saman was immense. Mattheus was the proverbial cucumber and imperious with it. Back four effectively served up another clean sheet (we can't allow the opener to count against them). And despite his aberration, David was far superior to his opposite number who really lacked confidence and consequently had several mix-ups with his own defence.

Maybe I have it all wrong. Maybe the plan is now simply to f*** about in the first half and then turn up in the second with the sucker blow. Has Thomas gone to school on the Rumble in the Jungle?
I think the difference was that in the first half Stoke had more effective players in Norrington-Davies and Thompson playing those hard tackling/fouling roles but both being on yellows were cruising towards red cards if they carried on in the same way. They were replaced by weaker players and we very quickly realised Tymon in particular was a weak link we could terrify by running at. We could have tried going long sooner but in the first half they had the men to stop us getting those long balls.

I’d have thought MON’s plan would have to have kept those two on for another 15-20 minutes and just replaced to freshen up and keep up the work rate otherwise and do what Barnsley and Coventry did. I suspect had we not gone 1-0 down they might have had to have gone even harder first half and possibly gone a man down, or played a bit higher up the pitch and left more gaps than they did defending a lead.

But on top of that, his positional sense is awful, he's crap in the air and he doesn't come for balls he should be claiming. Good shot stopper though. Sometimes.
Thats slightly over the top. His claiming of crosses and balls in behind is fantastic. Hes had a few sloppy freekicks and pass outs.

I think we have only seen one side of Janelt, filling in for Norgaard. Janelt is a great all round player from what I can see with great technique, and when Norgaard starts I think we will be able to play Janelt further up the field where I think he will exceed what we have already seen. When Norgaard starts we will hopefully be able to let Janelt off the leash, when we will all see how good this player is. Amazing for one so young.

Bristol city are the worst team in the division. how the hell did they win 3-1 at swansea
One reply on Swansea's twitter feed said that Bristol City were the worst team to play them this season, did nothing all game and stole the three points.

Oh the irony.

If he can keep scoring goals like that one today he'll add a whole new dimension. Like everyone else I cannot get enough of him, he's the full Kaiser

Makes good sense. Thought we went long first half though, but more out of desperation than invention, to be fair. Still don't quite understand how they faded so completely, despite the very good points you make about weaker replacements and the lack of the Barnsley approach. Anyway, why should we care? ;) :ROFLMAO:

From reading their board before the match it sounds like their first half performance was uncharacteristically good and possibly a reaction to a gutless display midweek against Barnsley. So unlike Barnsley, who’ve set up and trained into a high energy high press game over a long period and are now getting it consistent, for Stoke it was more like a burst of adrenaline mixed with hope given the goal head start.

I'm a fine one to talk, but I would urge decorum and discipline on the part of fellow Bees to stay well away from engagement with these spikey characters. Let our players do the talking on the field and allow them to melt down and embarrass themselves in peace. We're only really bothered about what Brentford do at the end of the day aren't we?

Absolute shambles. What was he thinking?
Getting a bit fed up of our commentators banging on every game with the 'can the opposition sustain this', like we're some unrelenting attacking force, when pretty much every game they do when teams set up this way against us.
The difference this time being...
the age of our opponents...Allen, Obi, Powell etc. So well spotted Charlie Mac and not so well spotted you Bees fans. Getting a bit fed up with them if truth be told... making such an elementary error early in the game. :fishing:

Going to have to agree to differ. He makes me nervous every time the ball comes into the box. He has qualities, I get that. But he's no Paul Priddy. Just not my cup of tea. ;)

And Chalobah has been booked 10 times which means he misses the next 2 games.
Genuine question - As Chalobah got a 10th yellow that got him a 2 game ban, what happens if he got a straight red later in the game. Does the Red over-ride the 2 match & make it 3 or do they run concurrent ??

I had half an eye on it and they weren’t that bad, they bought a lot of good players in the summer, they got rid of the little fat pig manager and the next one but Pearson has sorted them out.

When you see the goals though, a corner that went straight in and then a pass back that the keeper miscontrolled and got robbed. You think our “fans” gave Raya a hard time, I bet Michu and the gobshites are having kittens tonight.

I think the second half showed us what we want to see

a midfield of Norgaard Janelt and Jensen

So match skill from Jensen, the drive of Janelt and the defensive ability of Norgaard.

Then on the bench Dasilva Ghoddos and Emliano.

Back four as is

Front Line Toney any two from Mbeano Canos and Fosu
janelt came off for Norgaard.

I’d imagine they’d be consecutive as two distinct things leading to a ban each. Which is probably why they took him off.

Bryan and Ghoddos best halves of football for ages. I think TF put fireworks up their backsides. Credit to Thomas for a a marvellous second half
I think Bryan in particular came alive when we became more direct and looked to run in behind. Difficult to press a team that mixes a short and long game. The pressing players soon become disheartened chasing back towards their own goal which then gives us the space to play out from the back.

It’s not the first time a team as played against us, then gone on to run out of steam the game after, and it’ll not be the last, Millwall were unbeaten in nine games until today, but I wouldn’t bet against PNE beating them Tuesday. We take a lot out of teams.

I was feeling annoyed at half time at more of the same recent failings and the lack of a plan B, but can't argue with that second half performance, it was gutsy. Well done Thomas frank and team

Well done to the boys today, after a 1st half that we never got control off and spent so much time in our own half.the boys came out 2nd half and looked different class. It was good to see us change our style of play and we had stoke hanging on all half.every bees player rose to the challenge, and for me a very gutsy performance to clinch the three points. It seemed to me that Stoke had four more players than us in the 1st half
with them closing us down intercepting, and winning 2nd balls. But the manor in the way that we came back has really filled me with confidence that we are good enough for a top two finish. Well done boys so proud of the way you came back today, and gave me a very happy birthday.

Absolutely MASSIVE result!! What a turnaround. Fantastic second half, totally different team. Introduction of Jensen made a huge difference and Mbeumo and Ghoddos simply outstanding second half. Norgaard coming back the icing on the cake. Gave us all the willies with some needless free kicks near the end but well deserved winners in the end and with a bit of composure could well have scored more.. So good to finally get one over on Stoke. Now, please, please, please, no more shooting ourselves in the foot!!
Well said, good report.

I think he was doing that pedantic joke thing some do on here. Morrison had referred to the Premier League as the Premiership.

He said that because one of the guest said premiership (rugby top division) instead of premier league.

I don’t think that is true, the only thing stopping him from being nailed on player of the year is probably Ivan Toney.

VJ has been an utter revelation this season and I don’t why people are a going as if nobody has noticed.

He'll become a full German international, and I agree with your post; he has been good but we might be about to see, just how good he actually is. Exciting times!

And we need a tactically aware coach? DOH!
Well done to Thomas and his coaching team yesterday; I know he made an amusing comment when asked in an interview, if he takes credit for his half time teamtalk. He responded along the lines of no he can't take praise because that would mean what was I ............ doing in the first half 😂.

Look the same teams have been beating us with the same system for 12 months; it cost us promotion last season, and up until half time yesterday had put us out of the top 2 race. I still don't know why it took the coaching set up so long to change things around - it wouldn't have taken others so long (12 months) but I'm the first to praise them for doing so; we finally beat this system, and please god we can now kick on and achieve what this set up deserve.
