Looks like I am first one back, and good job as the rain has started.

That is what you call a BIG point. Very happy with that. Great battling performance. Referee got two big ones wrong for me, penalty yes but red card no. And I thought we should have had a pen. too.

Classic game of two halves and we could have won it at the end. Thought moses had overrun it but great pace to lift it over the keeper, button kept us in it before then.

It is tough this division!!

Roll on the scum.

Why not a red card?

Surely if it was a one on one and foul is committed the only way the red card can be avoided is if Craig was judged not to be the last man?

David Button kept us in it with a fantastic save and sure handling. And Harlee really stepped up to the plate when he can on. Thrilling match, which we could have won

a very emotional game for me, sadly my dad passed away last Saturday and he was buried on Wednesday, he took me to Brentford when I was 3 years old with my 2 brothers, he will be sadly missed by us all.. RIP Stan

any way back to today's game.. Button saved us in the first half - it was terrific fight back today..

Clayton backed into Craig and was looking to go over. Because of his movement it wasn't really a goal scoring opportunity IMO as he would of taken a touch before shooting which means there would have been cover.

However sometimes you can have a very biased memory, so I'll watch FLS and decide.

Good performance in the end though, probably should of won. Shame to see Jota off so early but made sense.

Brilliant second half which showed all our skill and battling qualities.

Clark made a huge tactical error in going defensive when winning 1-0 against 10 men,it just handed the initiative to us. MW promptly took off a defender and put on Moses whose moment of magic got us a point.

Thought the crowd became the 11th man second half.

Jota sub didn't make sense to me and I thought it was a waste as Smith was always going to come off , heyho.

Well done Bees. Great fightback.

Very sorry to hear this but he would have been immensely proud of the Bees in the second half, we were simply phenomenal. I am actually disappointed we only got a point.

My god I love this football club - got heart and come the end of the season this will be a huge point.

What a fantastic second half performance such passion and pride. We would not give up.
Thought all players were fantastic especially Judge.
Wont see a worse team than Birmingham at griffin park this season.

Agreed. Great team spirit. From where I was near the dugouts looked a straight red to me. As for our claim in second half hard to tell. Benefit of doubt went to defender I guess.

Must have taken a lot out of the players. Hope they recover for Tuesday.

Depth of squad evident today with Harlee, Stuart and Moses showing just how good they are. Before the sending off,I thought, we were playing some lovely football at a slightly higher tempo than last season. The transfer across the back four was good today better than last season where we were ponderous at times.

All in all a great performance.

Stonewall pen and red card to me but Mr Madley was very consistent today - as consistently appalling as he was to us at Leyton Orient.

Gave us absolutely nothing. Let them steal yards at throw ins with impunity, ignored three very decent penalty shouts. Every n50/50 went their way.

What have we done to upset him?

I will wait 12 hours before writing a considered match report for the blog.

We were very poor in the first half and owed everything to Button and the back 4. Second half we started to pass and move and were brilliant.

Looked like a penalty to me from way back behind the Brum dugout. Clayton was always fairly keen to go down in the box for us last season. Was a foul but he didn't need much encouragement. Craig probably should have just conceded rather than vainly try to stop him.

Our whole plan was out of the window from there and Button repelled 2 or maybe 3 very good chances. Brum should have killed it by half time. We huffed and puffed but basically didn't create anything to half time.

Dallas seemed to make the difference after the break combined with Clark's seeming preference to settle for 1-0. For long periods it was all Bees and it didn't look like 10 v 11. Chances and corner started to come as we dominated. McCormack came off for Moses and that made the difference. Moses capitalised on a slip at the back and slotted nicely. Him, Judge, Pricthard and Dallas look terrifying going forward.

Momentum was with us and we possibly could have nicked it

Thought the penalty and red card were both justified, however it looked a clear penalty for the foul on Bidwell to me. Silly from Craig, misjudged the bounce of the ball and should have just left CD to fluff his lines instead of putting us in the unenviable position of being a man down for most of the game.

Thought we played well, weathered the storm and owed the score line to Button at half time. He was awesome today, great shot stopping and really patrolled his area very well. Other than that, every player deserved at least a point today, as they all worked incredibly hard and were disciplined in their approach. Lastly, excellent tactics from Warburton - he read the game far better than Clark, and showed his ability as a manager today. We'll do fine in this division.

Hopefully Jota will get the chance to impress on Tuesday.

second half work rate and commitment was phenomenal and IMO ( perhaps biased) we deserved 3 points. We played the better football and don't have anything to fear this season, we look stronger, fitter and really do have some VERY good players.....

We need to settle quicker into matches. We were uncomfortable for the first 15 minutes and Birmingham looked more assured and more up for it. There is so much quality on our side that once we do get our rythmn we look very dangerous - even with 10 men.

I reserve judgment for the penalty/red card until I've seen it again, though had I been down the other end, I'd have been shouting for a definite pen I reckon.

I thought generally the referee had a terrible match, as did the first half braemar road linesman. While it's easy to get worked up about a ref, given his performance at Leyton Orient and now here... it is just incredibly frustrating. He got a number of big decisions wrong, and let a lot of minor things slide (OK if you do that, but if you're going to do it, do it equally).

For me, Dallas and Odubajo made the difference after they came on, and Warburton was tactically magnificent. Button was my man of the match though with a couple of fine saves and a couple of beautiful passes too from the hands.

I understood taking Jota off, as he is more creative and probably less likely to be a big presence when defending - but I have to say I was glad to see Moses along the side later on to give us some real pace.

Andre once again was quite isolated, but I have to give it to the man, I thought he worked tirelessly and did a great job generally holding up the ball and making some good runs. It must have been a difficult game for him today, but I thought he did a fine job considering.

All in all I was extremely impressed with our fighting spirit in the second half. Many teams would have crumbled from 1-0 down in 16 minutes with 10 men to a big defeat. It makes me proud that we didn't, and that we came back into it. Fantastic job, and a frankly embarassing result and second half from what I think are an extremely poor Birmingham team. They had their moments and looked decent in the first half, but it is absolutely criminal to be throw it away like they did in the second. Clayton Donaldson sir, I won't be surprised if you are in for a more difficult season than us this year.

So proud of the team! However, we need more muscle in midfield, so so obvious. What a team we'd be with someone in the Sidwell vein. If we can sign a physical and strong ball winning midfielder on loan we'll do even better. Take nothing away from the lads who were superb and tactical nous from Warbs. Toums still has value in that role and after today I think we can get Alan Mc back in there.

Condolences to you and your family fella.

Terrific fight back as you say today.

I know the ref got a lot of stick for it but as much as he was brilliant last season, the only one at fault for me was Tony Craig. Unfourtunate as he may have been with the bounce, it left Clayton in behind him, in the box one on one with the keeper and Craig pulled his arm back. Definite penalty and if the striker is one on one on the edge of the six yard box it's a goal scoring opportunity so definite red as well. Sloppy from Craig, no choice but to send him off sadly.

Gave us a mountain to climb. Jota was looking classy but made sense to take him off given his first league start over here and compared to the experience of Smitha nd Pritchard and Judge able to mix it up a bit when needed.

Aside from some nervousness we made Brum work very hard in the first half and it was a very even contest despite only having ten men. Our one fault was our seeming lack of confidence in front of goal. Button was terrific and was the MOM for me.

Second half we bossed the game. Smith was getting out muscled so a good move to bring Dallas on.

I feel sorry for Gray. Does everything right but doesn't have anyone to give the ball too in dangerous positions and was being pushed and pulled all over the place today. He will score goals in this league and deserves too as well.

Lee Clarke was doing his nut as the game wore on and you could see why. A newly promoted team down to ten men, had Birmingham on the ropes and I'm a little disappointed not to have come away with all 3 points.

Very proud of the performance we put in today again. Likely a much changed line up on Tuesday but if we have the same team spirit and play the way we did in the second half today, we'll be in Round 3 comfortably.

I thought that's where we caused them problems. That's why they took a forward off and brought a midfielder on.

Birmingham City's manager had a shocker as well. What was he thinking taking two strikers off against 10 men at only 1-0 up? Terrible terrible. I'd be raging if I was a brum fan. Should have tried to kill the game off. Awful from him.

To be honest I thought birmingham were generally poor. They made lots of chances in the first half, but we were playing nowhere near the level we can. Once we started to get our rythmn going - with only 10 men - we outclassed them.

Difficult to judge as Craig's sending off upset our game plan and of course gave us an uphill struggle. Smith looked very ponderous and IMO he should have come off insead of Jota. They should have buried us TBF in the first half but we always looked in the game as long as we kept our passing game going. Tremendous spirit in the second half and all credit to Dean and Moses who may well feature again on Tuesday as they did well. Craig was gulty of a silly error in letting the ball bounce and I would leave Dean in until he loses the shirt. Moses is so quick we really have to accommodate him too.
On another note I thought Clayton did nothing other than get the pen. Not fussed that he's gone.

Great fight back. To be honest, a lot of those players need to be rested v Fulham. The spirit in the second half was immense.

Very slow start by us. Are we showing you much respect? When we went for them we looked great.

Pen was totally Craig's fault. Looked like he let the ball bounce which is a cardinal sin. We have to stop giving soft goals away. It was a straight red for me.

We could/ should have been 2/3 down @ half time. Poor finishing and superb keeping kept us in it.

Second half - Brum gave up after 55 minutes and we pushed and pushed & got a deserved equaliser. Unfortunately I missed it as my youngest who is 5 had skulled a bottle of fanta ago needed the toilet ;)

Thought Pritchard, Dallas & Moses looked a real handful for Birmingham. Gray looked OK. Made some good turns when he got the ball to feet.

Couple of thoughts:

- we must be the smallest team in the league. We lack physicality.
- I think that we need another CB along Tarks (although I thought Dean did well when he came on).
- Donaldson was pretty quiet. Although he was in the right place to win the pen.
- don't think that Smith should be starting games.

Overall a point gained.

RE: Jota, I suspect that if the same happened with 10 games under his belt, he wouldn't have come off. I see MW's point.

On to the game, I honestly think the best Brentford side I've ever seen put in one of the best halfs. There was a lack of belief in the first half and too much panic but if these players believe in themselves, they can be a match for anyone. Final whistle and it was Birmingham blowing out of their arses after being run ragged by 10 men for half an hour - the pace and intensity was incredible.

Condolences. I used to go with my dad in my teens 40 years ago. My dad died (in hospital) minutes after the Huddersfield playoff in 2002. I still tell him about the Bees games I go to as I walk back to the car. This is such a special club in a special game that brings dads and their sons and daughters together

Anyone else disappointed with a point? On another note I've never understood the ruling for a red card and a penalty. Red card for denying the goal scoring oppourtunity but then given a penalty which is a goal scoring oppourtunity?!?double edged sword imo

Best wishes mate. When my old man died, someone said "they never leave you because you have your memories". Didn't get it at the time but as time has gone on; so true.

How Button got that header over the bar I'll never know. I was just waiting for the back of the net to bulge.

To be honest I thought birmingham were generally poor. They made lots of chances in the first half, but we were playing nowhere near the level we can. Once we started to get our rythmn going - with only 10 men - we outclassed them.
They were the "better" (i.e. more effective) team in the first half, even before the Red Card. And if they had been more accurate with their finishing (esp Thomas), not even David 'Superman' Button would have kept them out.

Tbh, I thought the difference was in their physicality - our back four (and Dougie) aside, we are a very small team, whereas they had some very big guys, who bullied us in the first half.

What made the difference in the second half - brilliant substitutes aside - was that when we got in their faces individually, they were shown up as lacking basic skill. And when we went at them at pace, too many of them were ponderous.

As I've said before, I'm still worried that we lack a couple of forceful big players in midfield and attack to give us more physical balance. So that if we meet teams who have both strength AND ability, we might struggle.

But Brum certainly aren't one of those teams, and as the second half proved, we lack for nothing when it comes to skill, pace and 'bottle'.

Happy Days! :sorted:

Thanks for the reports, checking in from hols where limited WIFI and live Premiership games on Ben Ghazi TV galore but no reference to our game.
Sounds like we're giving it a really good go which is all we can ask for, Clark won't last too long and Brum will finish out of trouble this season regardless of how they played today.
Don't know Bees 66 personally but a regular on here and one of us so sorry to read about your Dad but sure he'll enjoy watching from afar and he'll still be there mate, trust me.

Be good boys and let's not get too psyched up about Fulham in the Two bob cup, save the big team and fans performances for the league games.

A cracking game. Excellent entertainment. Button kept us in it first half with at least one fantastic one handed save but Brum were wasteful with their chances as well. Silly penalty to concede- particularly by a player of Craig’s experience. Although Donaldson made the most of it, it looked a clear penalty and a deserved red for Craig. Warbs brought Dean on (for Jota) and Harlee was fantastic for the rest of the match.

A good half-time talk and a tweak to the tactics. Dallas came on for Smith and was dangerous. Bees mounted a spirited fight-back and were the more likely to score as Brum focused more on defence. The more the game progressed, the better Bees got and the worse Brum got. The crowd played their part , roaring Brentford on and every Bee found new reserves of energy from somewhere.

A brave sub by Warbs bringing on Moses for Mac 15 minutes from time and Moses ran the Brum defence and chipped the goalie for a well deserved equalizer. Only one team would be a winner now, but Brum held out.
Great spirit and teamwork second half, credit to Warbs for whatever he did at half time and the Moses substitution, and well done to the GP faithful for trying to be that 11th man.

Dreadful inconsistent refereeing. Why no pen when Bidwell was brought down? Why no yellow card when the ball was kicked away preventing Bees taking a quick free kick? Why no foul for the constant holding by Brum defenders yet Bees penalized for trivial incidents?

Well done Bees, Dean and Button were key for us today. Jota looked interesting for the 15 mins he was on. Maybe more of him on Tuesday.

Agree with just about all of this.
This was my first game this season. Overall a great fightback and really could have won it second half, but Brum should have been out of sight by half time.

Negatives :
- Lacking confidence at start, misplaced passes and defence letting the ball bounce too often, which led to the pen and sending off.
- Felt sorry for Gray. Ran his a**e of all afternoon, but so often he was looked for with the long ball with 3 defenders on him. Maybe it was because we were a man short, but I've read on previous reports he's had similar service.
- Ref. Right about the pen and sending off. Wrong on everything else.
- Didn't understand why Dallas was dropped for Smith, particularly given Smithy wasn't in the game till he was subbed.
- Do we practise any corner routines? I know we are physically a smallish side, but like last season, the defence deal with our corners with ease.

Positives
- Thought the defence looked more assured with Harlee on, but then again, I was surprised how often Brum play the long ball.
- First time I've seen Pritchard. Looks very skilful and dangerous. Also Jota, who showed some lovely touches early on and also a willingness to track back. When Hogan's fit and Odubajo's on song, once we learn to get the final ball in at the right time, we really should frighten some defences this season.
- Dallas looked a different player to the one I saw last season. Changed the game, along with Brum seemingly settling for 1-0.
- Moses at makeshift right back. Eyebrows raised in New Road when he came on for Mac, but maybe that run and goal today will give him the confidence to run at people more now.

I didn't think we looked out of place in this league, but echoing comments on previous games, maybe there is still a bit of a confidence issue, as illustrated by the defence waiting for the first bounce and too many misplaced passes. Crowd definitely gave the team belief second half, but we've got to find a way to get our striker(s) into the game. As Warbs has said, we need to make the most of our opportunities in this division, as we won't get as many chances as last year.

For what it's worth, I gave Clayton a clap when he came off. He got a mixture of boos and a round of applause from NR when he came off and he didn't help himself with the interview the other day. However, he looked ok for them, will score goals and we wouldn't be in the Championship now without his goals last year. Just surprised he's gone to a team that look like they'll struggle this year.

Am open to correction, but I thought for the starting XI, we switched from our customary 4-3-3 to a 4-4-1-1 (with Smith the "1" midfield and Gray up front), or even a 4-4-2 (i.e. Smith and Gray up front).

Anyhow, as I saw it, Dallas was dropped for Jota, who started on the right of midfield. So that when Jota had to be sacrificed to allow Harley to come on, there was a gap down the right which Dallas filled at H-T (to allow the team to go a straight 4-4-1).

In which case, Smith was the obvious player to come off, esp since he had been pretty ineffective anyway, as you say.

Same here.

Same as Ealing Road.

With Novak playing we always had a chance as that made it 10v10

On a serious note that second half was outstanding, every single player have everything they had. Before we equalised I was already proud of our effort in what looked a defeat, but for Moses to then take that chance and for us to then keep on pushing after that, amazing effort.

These championship games are superb, there is so much riding on every single game

A great battling 2nd half performance where the 10 men did us proud, and we nearly pulled it off, it just shows the fitness of our lads, Brum were all done in, you could see them huffing & blowing with 15-20 mins to go, with this showing I think we will do OK, as our fighting spirit and fitness will see us through this season.
