Another penalty shoot out, another win!

We were the better team throughout but struggled to create any clear cut chances until the final fifteen minutes. First half Alexander should have scored with that header and Simpson's free kick forced a decent save. Karleigh flicked a shot onto the bar, Charlie slid the ball past the post when clean through and Wood somehow volleyed wide the goal at his mercy.

I thought it wasn't going to be our night but what a shoot out. You will struggle to see three better saves in a shoot out, clearly did his research for the first and stood up tall. Got a strong hand onto the post for the second and dived full strech to his right for the third and then had the initiative to make sure the rebound stayed out. Just a shame Spillane took such a poor spot kick as it would have given us a full set but well done to charlie, kev and gary for their spot kicks.

Thought both teams played reasonably well and defences were largely solid all game and you felt set pieces or a mistake would be the only way either side would score. As feared I didn't think Bean on the right worked and Scott will have to address the best way to set out his team for home games. If saturday is on i'd like to see Wood on the left and simpson on the right if weston and saunders are still out.

Not sure what those explosions were, were they flairs or bangers or what?

Pitch invasion looked fun but sadly another fax from the fa will be on its way no doubt :nono:

Roll on Exeter and then hopefully wembley, seeing us win at wembley has always been an ambition of mine, we are in touching distance.

Brilliant outcome. We deserved it overall and created more clear cut chances than Charlton, albeit all of them came late on in the game,; god only knows how Charlie contrived to poke that one on one with the keeper wide of the post. I think it was Wood who had out last chance from the edge of the area. Karleigh also clipped the bar after a corner scramble saw the ball fall to him.

However, three top saves from Lee (second and third ones in particular!) and ANOTHER victory via penalty shoot outs. Incredible that there have already been five this season!

The only real sour note was the knobends in Ealing Road letting off bangers on three seperate occasions - absolute idiots. And the pitch invasion was a little sad (and wholly unnecessary) considering the context of the match, though I am obviously delighted that it's a step closer to Wembley!! :D

I didnt think the pen that spun back onto the post would/should have counted. Isnt it once the ball stops going forward it is deemed to be dead??

Good performance overall and we good have grabbed it in the last 10 minutes or so. Charlie had a great chance which looked offside but wasn't and somehow went wide, KO hit the bar and Woody whacked a good shot wide, which if it had good in would have matched the one up at Brum.

Great saves by Lee in the shootout, although I will need to see that 3rd one again the telly!

I can now feel my toes again.

Onwards and upwards bring on Exeter! :bound: :bound:

The Beeb reckons we're already at Wembley...if only.

'That left Gary Alexander to convert the winner and send his side to Wembley.'

From the Tv view I thought we looked a bit rushed and frantic and tried to play the final ball to early and we suffered by not having natural wingers, but we put in some good tackles although the defending was a bit suspect at times!

Commentators (1 of anyway) were very biased toward Charlton. Maybe its because they were in the premier league once and we all know thats the ONLY league t.v people know about :(

There were a few miscued clearances towards the end of the 1st half, that's for sure! There were also one or two 'meaty' challenges!

Next Stop Cowshed, Then a Grand Day out Awaits

It seemed the prize loomed large for both sides tonight. Tight tussle and Charlton seemed a little more set and organised than the League encounter two months back.

Parkinson, the Charlton manager was edgy on the touchline, set off by Wright's early imprint "let him know you're there son, tackle" on Reid their winger. Parkinson being restrained by the 4th official, clearly agitated bellowed f*ck off, f*ck off to Scotty, as Andy gave him a "sit down shut up" retort to much amusement from the New Road. :D It set the tone and the New Road baited Parkinson for the rest of the game.

3 good chances in the final 5 mins went wanting, Karleigh crashed an exocet volley off the bar, Charlie missed a one on one poking it past the onrushing Elliott and the post and Sam Wood smacked a volley from the edge of the six yard area wide. Was that the chance gone...

Nope, this team likes penalties and destroying the old Bees myth of we never win shootouts from seasons past. :) Jackson hit and hoped and struck a thunderbolt which Lee stood tall and parried off like a boxer blocking a haymaker.
His 2nd stop was low to his right, complete with cartwheel, whilst his 3rd was just as impressive, diving low right, he stuck a strong hand up to stop the ball's direction diverting it up and rolling the opposite way along the line and he was up and across to kick the ball way just in case.

Our pens, Kevin, low left, converted, Charlie likewise low left, gave breathing space, Spillane went not low or left enough, well saved, whilst Alexander sidefooted powerfully right to seal the deal.

Solid, solid, solid at the back, Lee and back four played well, Bean wide right still looks as if learning this role, Simpson was off colour, left wing not his bag tonight. Dave and KOC were good, covered more ground and sat higher up the pitch. Charlie was neat and tidy, bar a poor miss, Alexander a tough tussle with Doherty. We were the better side and carried more threat than the Addicks.

So three hours from Wemb-er-lee, take nothing for granted, but do make sure the wife or girlfriend doesn't plan a spring break for you around Sunday April 3rd, as we may be having a right red and white party to attend! :)

We were the better side, Lee did not have any real saves to make in normal time apart from the one that bounced up and hit his face.

We were generally competent and passed the ball better than them, their final ball was woeful whereas we tried to pass it in the box at least and created far more chances. Both defences were strong.

Not the greatest of games but one of the best penalty shootouts, Lee was simply amazing. From the Ealing Road end that second one looked impossible to save.

I thougt we deserved to win.

we were the better team and should have won it in normal time.we have some right numpty fans in ealing road, think we need some infiltration in the stand to weed them out.the stewards running for cover was a bit Ott:pitch invasion was a bit embarrasing too..RIchard LEe....3 great saves, top man

I thought TV commentary was more balanced than in other Bees games I've seen on the box. Gave the (correct IMHO) impression that Charlton slightly had the edge in the first half, but that we dominated most of the second, though only really threatened from set pieces until the last 5 minutes.

We lacked width - Simpson can get by wide right, but not wide left - but competed well and our forwards looked potentially dangerous when getting the ball on the ground.

Commentators said that the choice of ends for penalties was because of the fireworks let off in ER. Whether or not that was true (might have been tossing a coin otherwise) we need better stewarding there

Thought the game was played at a high tempo, and some good (but clean) tackles flying about. Good game in general. Apart from 20 mins in the first half thought we were in control although Charlton looked dangerous on the counter. Defence looked good, and Osborne had a good tussle with Abbot, good learning curve for him as Abbot was very niggly and physical. Charlie should have finished it off near the end, but Lee made sure in the shoot off. Lee has turned out to be one of the buys of the season considering who he had to follow (similar could be said of Woodman also). We played some good football especially around their box in the second half and thought that if anything Charlton played more of the hoofball last night. Well done Andy and the boys...Ka sera sera...

Pretty dire match until the last 5 minutes and pens I thought.
Not a bad performance but not much to catch the eye from either side.
First time in New Road for ages. It feels very small.

How can anyone watch it on TV and listen to the commentators.....what do they know that any proper Brentford fan doesn't. I gave up after being told all of Robbie Simpson's goals this season have come in the Cup and then watched it on mute.

Karleigh was said to have started his career as a right back but converted to centre half!!!

Cut them some slack! They can't possibly be expected to know every last detail of the past of all 22 players, not counting the subs! They're expected to be informative, striking a balance between saying too much and saying too little, and I thought they got it about right. I didn't notice any bias. They credited Brentford with being the better team overall, in particular for their ability to get the ball into the box earlier and oftener in order to set up chances. I thought they added to the interest of the event and earned their crust.

Well done Richard Lee-again!

A deserved win, and justice was eventually done.
But take another bow, Mr Lee!:sorted:
I cannot ever recall seeing two better penalty saves than his second and third .And intelligent judgement for the first. Good to know Richard and the management really do their homework and preparation thoroughly.
Woodman's quality crossing and set piece delivery also very worthy of praise, and was a class above anything Charlton could offer in that department.
And a special mention to Leon Legge for that decisive-but clean-tackle/clearance in his penalty area in the closing minutes:)

I agree and i think the pens were at the away end due to the C0ck that threw them on the pitch!!!

What i loved about last night was there was very little hoofball and we tried to play football which is encouraging. Simmo looked out of sorts but he hasnt had much game time lately so was to be expected but all round we seem to be playing alot better football or at least trying to. Lets not forget Charlton i think were 2nd at the weekend before they lost i think and we by no means under pressure and i feel we later on in the game had the more clear cut chances!!!

My god you have an opinion about everything don't you.I don't think i've ever seen anyone love to see themselves in type as much as you.

Oh well at least for once your opinion is based on what you saw and not what you read :sorted:

I hope you are not claiming that to try and dampen my, and I suspect several hundreds of others, fury about the stupidity of the mindless idiots who threw fireworks/bangers on the pitch last night and invaded the pitch at the end. Just for once I would like to applaud the players off the pitch for the sterling performance they put in - but yet again that was denied us because some juvenile t**sers decided to spoil it for the rest of us.

I doubt very much it was decided before the game started from which end the penalities would be taken- and doubt even more your assertion that Sky would have chosen to have the penalties at the Brook Road end, given that they had a fixed camera position in the Ealing Road, but not Brook Road, and this would have given them much better camera angles.

It's based on what I heard, not what I saw. Be precise. Avoid personal abuse.

Apologies i was trying to give your last post some credibility because everything else you type IS based on what you heard and at least this time you had both ;)

Interesting we now have the scenario where we play Exeter in the league on 15th Jan and then again in the JPT on 18th Jan. Always seems to happen that way!!

amazing saves from Richard Lee. surely he is worth Capello having on the bench just for penalty shoot outs!? uncharacteristic miss from Charlie in the 91st minute. we deserved to win it overall. will the video be out in time for Xmas?

Sour grapes from charlton website
"Quote"

The 2nd penalty appeared a very good save from a decently struck penalty. Keeper guessed right.

The 3rd penalty the keeper clearly jumped forward off his line before the ball was struck. The laws of the game say he must not come forward off his line before the ball is struck. The keeper CHEATED!

But then most keepers do cheat when a penalty is taken, and referees seldom enforce this law of the game.

Imagine the ball not placed exactly on the spot or a rolling ball........would referees ignore that?
So what is the difference?

Encroachment is another issue seldom properly dealt with.
