How to Watch Saturday's Match: KICK-OFF 15:00

Round 40 Recap.

I'm sitting here still shaking my head. Watford drop 2 points, Swansea drop 3 points. The golden platter is presented to us....what an opportunity to make an impact and a strong, strong claim to 2nd spot.

In the early kick-off Watford went ahead through massive deflected goal, but were ultimately pegged back for a single point. Later in the afternoon it was karma not so chameleon for Swansea as Preston managed to bring on what must be the Billiard World Champion who cannoned the ball off TWO Swansea players before finding the rather oversized snooker pocket in the last minute. It's well worth a watch if you haven't watch that. It was the best laugh I had for a while.

and here's your latest regular massive penalty appeal. Top marks from the referee for not getting out the tape measure for this perfectly executed long jump.

1617911253893.png

All of that left the door to the Top Two way more than ajar as Tuesday evening came ever closer. Another massive opportunity to close the gap and put it all in our own hands again. Another chance to remind the rest of the league what a free-flowing football team we are; and another occasion with which to increase our mighty goal difference. You know the rest. No lucky deflections for us and Sky could only make the highlights last 90 seconds as opposed to the regulation 2 minutes.

So, so frustrating and so, so infuriating. For the record I would still have had Marcondes start instead of one of CN/VJ. Fosu didn't pull up any trees when he came on. Canos had a superb game - yes a shame he didn't sneak in that 1 on 1, but he more than made up for that IMHO. Toney didn't take his chance (albeit a difficult one indeed). They had two defenders on Pinnock for Ye Olde Corner Routine. And Birmingham took 3 minutes over their first throw-in whilst the ref sat in his sun-lounger ignoring what was going on around him. Anyway...enough venting.

Round 41
As usual, another set of fixtures comes around quickly in these parts. Before we go any further and I suggest that this season isn't over yet, I'd like you all to take a nostalgic journey back in time to 1992 when, with 7 games to go, we went on our "greatest undefeated run ever" to achieve promotion.

If we do the same this time around, then it's very likely that we will get promoted. But that is the measure of the challenge that we now face in terms of the results that we need to achieve. Anything fewer than 6 wins and a draw and our chances of the Top 2 drop below a third.

This is the set of fixtures where things start to get interesting for Watford. They entertain Reading at Vicarage Road where they have an unexplainably good home record this season (see last weeks preview for more details). It's live on Sky on Friday with a 7:45pm Kick Off if you fancy some tension in your locked-down life on a evening. Now, I guess some of you are wondering what the best outcome is in this game. To assist in this the GPG Supercomputer has been performing some scenario analysis which is summarised in the table below. Right now we have a 7% chance of auto promotion and a 98.1% chance of finishing in the Top 6. A Reading win will almost DOUBLE our auto promo chances whilst having a immaterial effect on our Top Six chances. Meanwhile a Watford win would have a devastating impact on our Top 2 chances, but a minute impact on our Play-Off security. So there's your answer! Tomorrow we are all Luton haters.

538 make Watford heavy favourites for this one, unsurprising given their giant erection of a home record. This is 3rd v 8th in the Justice League with 7 virtual points separating them. To be honest, Watford are well worth the numbers that 538 have originated, especially when you look at how "unspecial" Reading are.

1617913414091.png

Swansea travel to Millwall when no Top 7 team has managed to do anything other than draw this season. Swansea have plummeted to 23rd in the Form Table whereas Millwall have risen to 4th after wins against Derby, Middlesboro, Rotherham and Stoke. Swansea's form makes beautiful reading L L L L - isn't that lovely?

1617914158889.png
Perhaps unsurprisingly 538 have Millwall as favourite for this one. Nobody East of Port Talbot would disagree, and possible lots West of the Steelworks too judging from the Jacks's outpouring of grief at the moment. Shame.

The evening before Brentford take on Preston, Thomas will know the result of the Watford v Reading match. Will that outcome influence his team selection? Maybe it might have at home, but I don't seriously believe that he would have taken more than 1 spare player for a 400 mile round trip to Preston. Mind you I suppose they would have added to their frequent flyer tallies! Other than that I haven't got a lot to say about this one. We won't see Rico until the post-season fixtures (if there are any of course 🙃 ) and I can't see DaSilva coming back before Rico if there is nothing worthwhile playing for in the last 4 or 5 matches. That rather hampers Thomas's selection for the starting XI. Fosu is clearly nowhere near displacing Bryan (who elevated his game on Tuesday), or the MotM Canos. Meanwhile in midfield it's three from five: CN/VJ/EM/MJ/SG. Will Thomas make an adjustment to play two attacking players rather than CN/VJ + 1 other? Probably not to be honest. But I wouldn't object if he did. The back four won't change unless Henrik is 100% fit, which I doubt - maybe another to rest and "see how it goes" over the next 2-3 matches - both us and Watford.

I would remind regular readers to take a look at the table. We are 9 points behind Watford with a game in hand. Win that game and then we are 6 points behind. Win the fixture against Watford and we are 3 points behind. That leaves 5 opportunities to peg back those 3 points - and Watford still have Millwall (see above), Swansea (always good for a dive), Luton (local derby), Reading (yeah ok) and Norwich (7-0 winners!) to play. It's not over yet, but we need the Spirit of Holder. Who wouldn't pay good money for a "Where are my Doubters now?" reprise if it all falls into place a la 1992?

538 makes us evens to win, and WhoScored reckons we will score with a fast break - go on Senor Canos - slam dunk it this time!

Looking at that form table just emphasises how frustrating this run has been. We could (and arguably should) have won all 4 of those draws which would have put us 1 point behind Watford with a game in hand v Rotherham.. .sigh....

Ouch that Rico and JDS news hurt, I wasn’t aware that they are possibly play off only players now

We know that Henry has a Hamstring injury which can be difficult to overcome. It was said originally that Dasilva had a hip injury., do we know what type of injury this is.

I know this is a long way away but you only have to look at all the hassle Andy Murray has and is having with his hip problems

Your points about Watford are a bit off, last week you said they were missing their manager (that was Darren Moore, not Xisco), they dont travel to Millwall so the Swansea comparison doesnt scan. And their home form isnt inexplicable, they have a very solid defence, and keep scoring more tha the oppo is lots of games. One quoted game of xg stats doesnt explain a season.

Why doesn't the very solid defence happen away from home then?

One of lifes great questions, not sure what that would have to do with their home form though? I suppose you could look at the fact they have conceded the least goals away from home as some indicator that its not a bad defence though? More of a valid question is why they wouldnt attack at all under Ivic.

Not trying to pretend otherwise, a watford fan with a wife from Brentford and a soft spot for them. To confuse my emotions even further i lived in Bournemouth for 4 years at university and quite like them too! Interested observer on here for a while, and just wanted to correct some of the incorrect stuff being said. I would very much like to see Brentford go up, but it doesnt make the comments on Watfords manager being missing, or not having a good defence away from home any truer.

Like i said, watford are my first and indeed main team, but i do like Brentford and support them v anyone else bar Watford. wasnt trying to pull the wool over anyones eyes, but also probably thought i’d get some stick if i put Watford down so didnt directly charge into a forum saying “hi i support your rivals”... which appears to have happened anyway and clearly
My posts were too watford centric. Dont think i was rude, aggresive or wrong though?. Will leave it there if upsetting you, wasnt the aim, just wanted to point out some info about Watford that you seemed to have wrong. Cheers and good luck.

The key is to say “Hornet in peace”, trust me all is forgiven as soon as you do 👀

Is there a style guide for visiting supporters on the GPG? There perhaps ought to be.

Yeah, like i said i didnt approach it right, wasnt trying some big ruse, just didnt want a “here comes someone from another team lets abuse him” thing. Which i guess i’ve made worse. C’est la vie.

We generally don’t mind fans of other clubs coming on and commenting honestly and with sensitivity. We don’t just turn on away fans just for having the misfortune of following someone else- we’ve had perfectly friendly discussions with many. We don’t need “in peace”, just for it to be obvious you’re not on a wind up.

Pretending to be a Bee while just talking positively about your own team is just a bit lame and doesn’t add much to our knowledge or perspective. So is unsurprisingly not very welcome. I’d actually be interested in Watford fans’ perspectives if they weren’t obviously being a bit snidey.

Watford look very good, going forward with Sarr and Zinckernagel? They've got players willing to drive at, and commit defenders. The stats say they're not bad defensively either but they look like they've got a mistake in them here.

Gutted that they sacked that haddy of a manager earlier in the season.

If Bournemouth don't make the play-Offs, I really fancy us to do it.

Bournemouth will make the playoffs :(

Our form can't be much different than Reading? Lose tomorrow and its a 4 point gap with Bournemouth able to make it even less tomorrow

I think we will be in the play-offs. It's Hardly comfortable though is it?

Reading have some dangerous forward players aswell, Ollise looking fantastic if he gets space.

If you spend 30 million plus on a player that is what you get.

Reading actually playing really well , look quick and skilful but Sarr ruthless and Prem quality in taking those 2 chances . Next goal to Reading makes this really interesting, not sure what the best result is for us , a win for Watford pretty much ends automatic but if Reading make a dramatic comeback gives them a load of confidence going for the playoffs.

We had a 30m striker last year and probably have one now. It's about the whole team and we aren't at the same level as Watford, Norwich and Bournemouth ?

Autos were gone a couple weeks back for me (I know, I know), so a Watford win is the preferred outcome this evening as Reading occupy the last play off place. Be great (not as great at automatic promotion granted) to be able to play a changed team for the last couple of games of the season before going into the play offs.

Reading have actually had more chances than Watford, and both teams are playing better than we are at the moment IMO.

Be better to have the same team if they were winning.
