Hard to judge a centre back when he has a left back playing outside him at right back and no defensive minded player in front of him in midfield.

More than in any other position, IMHO, you need to give a CB time to gel with the team. Working as a unit, being able to anticipate what your teammates are doing and that you can rely on them is absolutely key. Will take some time...

Really gobsmacked by the criticism on here!
Cant see much criticism at all. Most say he did ok, 1 or 2 saw something a little more detailed. He's new and ok, nothing more can be seen from a couple of games imho

As TF has said he has things to learn about how we play but I didn't see anything alarming about his performance yesterday. The most noticeable thing about him is that he makes Pinnock look small.

He was always going to need time to adjust to our style, he's just come from the most agricultural style available! He'll hopefully be behind a fully fit Pontus and Pinnock though for a while, and can work on those elements of his game in the meantime but it could take a while.

I'm not.

Remember a lot of these characters wanted Ollie out last year as he didn't try and had a sh*t attitude.

I am sure every club has its set of complete belters.

Just as well that the critics on here aren’t in charge of our club policy and our transfer policy!

Otherwise, if we listened to them we’d be propping up League 2!

I simply can’t believe how quickly people can jump on Goode’s back, or indeed some of the other newcomers.
When did players like Maupay or even Ollie really shine from day 1?

Answer never!

Oh, I forgot, this is the GPG, where some expect any new signing to be performing at the highest level immediately.

It’s good that the club’s transfer in policy is based on developing potential, to then maximise the transfer out premium.
We’d be bankrupt if the critics on here were in charge!

Needs a bit of time to learn the link up role and how we play outside the box, however he got into lots of great positions in the box and you can see Mbuemo and Jensen dropping some lovely crosses in for him to finish off. Is also a massive bonus when defending free-kicks/corners etc..

I could tell Goode would live up to his name by his interview. I don’t expect the miseryguts to understand that. Or anyone else, necessarily.

Really solid tonight! Not much passing out from the back but probably not the team to be doing that.

Goode (ahem) to hear the positive reaction to him. I didn't watch the game but the ...positive reaction is ...nice to hear.

Southampton played a pretty strong team! Passing out from the back hopefully he'll develop, but I think everyone acknowledged that when he joined.

Maybe we only need one CB and Sørensen got the nod, with Thompson the other defender (and Fosu as well!).

Makes me laugh. Now even Scousers want our players  taken from a Liverpool FC forum for van Dijk's replacement/cover.

New centre back – Yesterday,10:10

Has nobody thought about Charlie Goode, the centre back currently playing for Brentford ?
Last season he played brilliantly for Northampton Town and was then snapped up by Brentford
for 1.2 millioin. In my opinion he will continue to have a meteoric rise to the Premiership. It
won't be long before a big team comes in for him. He is a player very much in the Van Dijk mold.
Tall, strong, dominating in the air and good on the ball too. Can carry the ball through into midfield and
beyond, just like Virgil. Good header, can score and possesses a very long throw.
What more could you want? Forgot about your Koulibalys at 70 million plus. I'm sure
Brentford would let him go for a fraction of this!
Come on Liverpool. have a good look at him before it's too late!

They'd struggle to have a good look seeing as he is injured and hasn't started a league game for us yet. By all means bid £50m!

And at moment he is our fourth choice Centre back. Remarkable but just demonstrates how bloody good our directors of football are. We genuinely have two players competing for every position even if a few of those (Forss, Thompson and Roerslev) are early on in their career development

Interesting to hear Henrik say in his post match interview that Goode and Mads Bech are competing for the 3rd centre back spot.

That is what I would have expected, unless one of them was injured?
I just assumed that Goode would have naturally been 3rd choice considering the amount paid for him. Not complaining at all though - delighted to see more progression from the B team and MBS has really stepped up in his last few appearances. Looks really assured.

I’d say the investment in Mads Bech is probably greater than Goode at the moment. Goode has a lot of decent basic attributes but he’s not looked as proficient technically in the few moments I’ve seen.

We will soon find out over the next few weeks for both of them, the improvement in Mads Bech is clearly there and Im sure Goode wont let us down if needed. Out of the four Pinnock is the main man now, fingers crossed he stays fit all season.

I think Phil and Ras basically give TF free rain to pick a winning team from the squad and don't tell him he has to prefer player x over player y

On today's showing, Goode is a long way of being good enough to play first team football. His distribution got us into an awful lot of trouble (Stoke weren't bothering to press him in the first half as he wasn't passing to his own team most of the time anyway) and he was so, so weak for their third. Work to do...

He looked much more comfortable in a back 4.

FWIW, we started last season playing 3-4-3 and many similar comments were made about Pinnock.

From what I've seen of Goode in a handful of games, he looks absolutely fine when it comes to 'body on the line' type defensive situations, (hence why he was a success at L2 level) but does not currently possess the technical ability for a team aspiring to reach the Premier League, hopefully we can coach it into him but it will not happen overnight.

Not in a million years!! Pinnock should never have been dropped last season for JJ. TF dropped a clanger there early on. Way better than what Goode has offered so far. At 25 he should be at his best. He’s L1/L2. No more.

So why have we signed him? Not disagreeing with your assessment btw.

No idea. Shame JJ wanted first XI football and not to be 3rd choice here. 🤷

I’d have liked another RB too. Oh well!! 😂

He didn't play well but I am going to risk a prediction and say he will be a very good player for us.

I certainly think he will look better in a back four. I don't think he'll be the same quality as Janson or Pinnock, but coming in to do a job in a system he's familiar with will help. An okay back up, I would say.
