Interesting that Bolton are appealing Davies's red card. Firstly, he'll be out injured anyway. Secondly, he had been elbowing like mad all game. Hermann was sent off for the elbow that fractured Davies's cheekbone, but the only difference I could spot between that and the elbows that Davies had been landing on Hreidarsson was that Hermann's elbow connected better.

And someone needs to give Alan Shearer a lesson in jumping without using your elbows "for leverage". What are you levering against, Alan?

Of course I've played football and I fully realise that it's instinctive to raise your arms when jumping. But the only leverage you'll get is if you connect with the other person, as you can't lever against thin air.

Davies was unlucky with is red I think, he had his eyes on the ball the whole time and it looked as though he thought he had a free header, as his raised his arms to get up for it he's connected with Faye, but nowhere near as bad as what Faye made it look. I think the referee was a bit guilty of even-ing things up, especially infront of the home crowd.

high jumpers 'lever' their arms, i guess its so they can jump higher...

Yeah I did see them, they did look a bit dodgy, and him and Herman were having a bit of a battle all the way up to Hermans red. But I think for the actual incident he was innocent. With a player like Davies, he needs to win his headers (coz its Boltons Style) and if he played any other way I think he'd struggle to find another premiership club because theres not many like him in the prem. I think he gets singled out (Davies) becuase 9 out of ten times the ball will be played up in the air instead of the floor, and hes more likely going to be involved in these challeges.
By the way arms are a massive contribution towards getting any height in your jump, regardless if your jumping with anyone or not- Ed.

Throwing some mass in one direction provides an equal and opposite force in the opposite direction thicko
That force is applied by the player's boots to the ground and the earth is so massive that you don't notice it moving. If the player wants to get any leverage with his arms, they must make contact with something.

this is why video replays shouldn't be introduced, because you've managed to see two of those incidents in completely contrasting lights to what i see them in...

so it's the term "leverage" that is annoying you, Ed? thanks for ruining what could have otherwise been an interesting thread, btw :zzzzz:

it's pretty obvious you can gain more elevation if you use your arms as part of your upward thrust. so if your point is that Shearer used a word incorrectly, then bravo....

getting back on topic I thought that there was a clampdown on diving this year? I've certainly seen a lot of it in this game (& in the Spurs Everton game where all three of the challenges by the bloke that got sent off, whilst reckless & possibly deserving of cards anyway, didn't seem to make any contact).

In direct contrast how Sam Allardyce has got the front to accuse the ref of bias is beyond me, that dirty little Bolton **** was going in elbows first all over the place & if you ask me, should have walked for the elbow on Hermann in the first place. Leverage my arse, if it's a red-card offence to hit someone in the face with an elbow then using your pointy elbows for face-height leverage every time you go for a header aint a very bright idea is it.
