From watching him, he seems to possess both the excellent reflexes of Daniels and the strong shot stopping of Bentley. Really exciting signing and I think we will some spectacular saves from him next season, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Woijcech Szczesney.

However, he’s not the finished article.

Like both of our keepers from last season, he doesn’t look the most imposing aerial presence and if we are to improve significantly on league position we must command our own box better against teams that will utilise set-pieces well. That’s a bit of a worry, although we have added height elsewhere with Pinnock and Noorgard.

He has also come under criticism for his distribution at Blackburn, but they have a very different sort of team and I don’t think they have players as comfortable receiving the ball from at the back as we do. So hopefully this is something that will improve organically once he gets used to the way we play.

It’ll be easy to get on his back if there’s early mistakes but let’s also not forget, he is two years younger than both Bentley and Bonham, 23 is very young for a goalkeeper, and last season was his first full season at Championship level. There’s a lot of improvement in his game to come so let’s not get ahead of ourselves but he’s got special potential and we’ve got a Spanish GK coach that has hand picked him, so he’s in the right place to develop.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here. From sources quite a while ago, it was considered within the coaching staff that ( allegedly ) Bentley had peaked. With Raya there’s far more opportunity for improvement. Hopefully we’ll see that over the coming couple of years.

Views of Blackburn mate:

Disappointed he’s leaving. Great shot stopper, bags of potential, not many better outside the top flight.
That said, he had a bad second half of last season (wasn’t the same after breaking his nose at West Brom) and Mowbray lost trust in him.
Hope he does well for you, pal.

Interesting signing. There seems to be quite mixed views on him from Rovers fans particularly about his ability to play out from the back which will be paramount with us. I assume the club have him down as having the potential to develop with us whereas Rovers don't. That may say as much about the comparable coaching teams and styles of play as the player himself.

I can’t believe we got anything for Bentley. I really thought his career was over in November. i was sure it was over with BFC. I was so much more relaxed about Luke in the end even though Dan seemed to be more on track than he had been, by about February. So we get a proven Championship goalie with potential for the Bentley money. Good man management. Good business. I’m in awe of the management team, but don’t expect me buy more than a match ticket and beer from them. BFC1997 says it all for me.
And as for his downturn after breaking his nose, that’s understandable and he wouldn’t have to be Peter Cech to get over that. Welcome David.

personally I'm finding it hard to work out if he is an upgrade/downgrade, or like for like replacement for Bentley. I guess only time will tell.

I suspect in terms of current ability, Raya and Bentley are very similar however the marginal gain being Cana’s relationship with Raya will be a lot more positive than with Bentley. That will in turn help with growth mindset and confidence which seemed to have taken a downturn with Bentley.

At least on a par with Bentley now, probably better. And whereas Bentley may have reached his peak, there's potential for Raya to get better. And he cost less than we got for Bentley. What's not to like?

A bit of coaching and he’ll be our new star keeper for 2019/20. :)

I bow to rebus's inside knowledge. I was just referring to the figure I read somewhere of £4m.
Even the add ons won’t take it to £4m. Unless we have a sell on?!!? And he’s sold for £10m?! lol

Really like the way he seems to be able to shift his body position so quickly and that he is looks to win the 2nd ball automatically. I know it's only clips but those are abilities that are very hard to coach into a keeper that doesn't naturally possess them. Hmmm. Like the look of this lad.

From a Blackburn chap I Know:
Very good keeper mate. Excellent shot stopper and great athleticism. He’s not been the same since Jay Rodriguez broke his nose though. Horrific injury to be fair. You can see his confidence coming out to thwart a striker bearing down on goal has been affected. Hopefully he can get back to his best. He lost his place in the team for the last 6 games last season so £3m is a good price for both clubs and allows us to maybe strengthen elsewhere. Sam Gallagher has been linked so that would help us raise the funds to get that one over the line.

Will be interesting to hear how his Spanish/Lancastrian accent sounds this time next year!

Poor Raya, in the excitement over norgaard, pinnock, Jansson etc he’s been a little overlooked. Will be interesting to see how he gets on. Sounds like he’s an incredible shot stopper and with a couple of beasts in defence in front of him his lack of height/confidence on crosses may not be an issue. Interesting that Frank commented on his distribution being a positive when most Blackburn fans seem to think it was a weak spot.

Guess it depends on what he was being asked to do, maybe his long/direct distribution wasn't very good but his short/quick release distribution is excellent - which is what we need :)

Good point.. one of the most impressive things about young Gunnarsson is his ability on the ball which is probably what’s seen him leapfrog ahead of balcombe so I can’t imagine we’d sign someone who wasn’t at least adequate with the ball at his feet

I think people are/were less enthused because he's small and the Blackburn fans forums seemed quite divided on him, with descriptions of good shot stopping but mistakes, and not being commanding in the box.
Just a lot easier to be excited about some of the other signings on the face of it.
