Maybe we will move away from the streaky runs now, remember what happened when Uve left.

Met Dean Smith last year and he is a very decent man. He has become a better manager as time has gone one.. even though there were a few dodgy spells... would Villa fans give him as much time as we did during a run like Jan - March 2016??? I don't think so.. unsure about Terry as his assistant... would he be undermined by JT' s status and achievements as a player... bit weird.. . I'm expecting O'Kelly to go there as a first team coach. All the best to Deano though...

As for us, we will carry on.. our structure gives us the opportunity to continue in the same vein.. expect Thomas Frank to step up with King Kev as assistant...

Think he was/is a good man manager (and bloke). Not tactically brilliant.
With Terry organising the defence and him managing all the talent they have they should do better than they have done.
I think it's possible we even benefit in the end, as I believe we could potentially get a better tactician, and hopefully the man-management side is less important now, with the structure/ethos/modus-operandi of the club that's been being established over time.

I have no real qualms about him leaving. I enjoyed him as our manager, he was a passionate coach and brought about a period of calm and evenness to our first team. We played some brilliant football under him at times, and attracted the begrudging respect of many of the larger teams in the division/country. He always spoke well and was a good ambassador for the club. I don't blame him for taking the job - very few people get the opportunity to manage the club they support, and to do it with a salary many multiples of what he was earning before is an easy decision. He had a great deal of trust and backing from the staff, both here and at Walsall, but I imagine it could well be a bumpy ride working for those in charge of Villa at present.

But he was a cog in a large organisation, and he and his career will have benefited massively from the Brentford machine. He made us look good, and we made him look great. Alongside some of the brilliant performances were some very poor runs, and a weak mentality that saw us drop loads of unnecessary points over the seasons. I hope we make a next appointment that keeps us steady off the pitch, and exciting on it. Whether that's Frank or someone else, the DoFs have been proving to us over the past couple of years that they've learned an awful lot and have clearly planned for this at some point.

Wow that was fast. Hope the Villa fans show some patience, it's a slow build with Dean.

Personally I'm hopeful that Frank will get the job and will provide the fresh spark to up our win rate and push us into a more aggressive position.

Come on you Bees.

No way is Terry as assistant a Smith man or appointment. Very much has the feel of we need someone in charge until John has all the required qualifications. Hope it works out for Smith as he seems a decent bloke, but it's full of risk.

Guess O'Kelly will go as 1st team coach and Franks stays with us as head coach.

Do we get a nice wad of compensation from villa? Like Deano, but Thomas Frank has more of a premier league manager look about him.

It does sound, from the Club release, that RO'K is still being negotiated, with Frank taking training tomorrow. I like the use of "structure" in the Club statement that they will make an announcement on the First Team coaching structure in due course. Interesting times.

All the best to him. He gave us a good couple of years and given time and the right backing, could do something with Villa. We knew that if Villa came with an offer, he will more than likely be off.

Obviously Dean will go there full of confidence he will be a success. But he also knows if he's sacked he's financially set up for life and his stock will still be high enough to get a managerial job thereafter.

I wonder if he will tell John Terry that he intends to change the captain on a match-by-match basis and that he stands by that belief so much that he will die in a ditch over it :D

Not too worried about him going even though he did a good job, he had a great structure to work in.

I’m more concerned about him trying to sign Mepham and/or Konsa given Villa’s defence but also Sawyers and Maupay with McEachran a possibility given his contract being up.

Exactly. Anyone questioning why he’s gone there needs their head testing - he won’t have to work again after the Villa job.

If the last three/four years have shown anything it’s that when players move on we get in better and improve. I’ve no doubt the same will hold true re first team coach. Top 6 nailed on; top 2 very possible:)

Sad to see him go but pleased (in an odd way) that an English manager outside of the normal dinosaur group has been given what is still a massive job. Good luck to him. Looking forward to our next chapter.

I am genuinely sad about this. I have liked having DS in charge. I didn't always agree with him and think the success he has had with us has always been about the system as well as him; but he is a thoroughly decent, open-minded individual who tries to treat people and do things in the right way. I fear for him at Villa TBH but hope he does ok, so long as it is not at our expense!

Thanks Dean, a very good man who has done a really good job for us.
However, this isn’t in my opinion a huge setback as we’re not dependant on any one individual apart from Matthew anymore.
Villa want and need promotion this year so the pressure on him will be immense but it’s his dream move to his boyhood club. He won’t buckle but hope he gets time and ends up third as king as we’re above them.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see a bid for sawyers in January, followed by Rico Henry in summer.

Do managerial contracts ever work in the same was as player ones in terms of clauses added by former clubs? Or is it always a clean slate? I.e. will Walsall benefit in anyway? Or, will there be any add on for us clauses based what he achieves at Villa?

Not surprised... other than John Terry as his assistant.

Hope Smith's left his wife down in Windsor - for her sake!!

Don't worry mate they are out of villa price range apart from sawyers. 7 million in January will be the only one.

Trying to work out what ur saying. Couple weeks ago you said nothing to see here. Villa are a chequebook club with no strategy and u fully expected Dean to have his 3rd anniversary with us. Who are u saying needs their head tested?

Is this the rebirth of Scott Hogan? Or will Smith keep him in the sidelines... assuming he's ever fit?

One consolation is that our best players are worth a sh*t load of money now so Villa will need to have very deep pockets - that's if we even bother to take the call.

Meps, Konsa, Watkins and Maupay will be Prem bound if we don't get promoted so unless Villa promoted can't see any of them going Villa.

It seems some people are forgetting that DS was Villa’s 5th, 6th, 7th choice........the feelers went out to all and sundry. One said ok, I’ll do it.

I think he's saying that anyone asking why Smith would leave Brentford for Villa needs their head testing - seems fairly obvious.

Villa are a checkbook side, but with both Henry and Faria turning them down, Smith became a natural choice for them. I imagine Villa's checkbook doesn't make as much an impact on already wealth individuals such as Henry and Faria...

I'm disappointed that he's going. But I can accept it & wish him all the best.

The football was incredible at times, even better than the best we'd previously witnessed at GP, under Mark Warburton. He came in when the club were at a cross roads and has been fantastic as a head coach.

I like Dean Smith & wish him all the best at his & his dad's club, back where he's from. He deserves it & we've helped him!

The king is dead, long live the king. Come on you bees. Cheers Dean/Richard.

Looks like a case of the heart ruling the head, BIG MISTAKE. I wonder how long you will be going home with a smile on your face.It was only a few days ago that Smith was saying he was happy in his job, working with some great people and going home every day with a smile on his face. SO WHAT CHANGED, could it be money before achieved?

That’s not far from the truth mate but it’s a popular choice with the fans for now.
I do think they believe he is solely responsible for our signings, tactics and style of football so they may be disappointed

Mate - it’s Villa. It’s his club. Life is short. That was the only club he would have left for imo. Good luck to him. Cheers Dean. The Dean is dead. Long live the Frank!

He was fourth choice when I wrote that. Just proves a week is a long time in football!

The biggest problem we have is Smith knows who we want to bring in in January.

Not too much of an issue I hope. Aston Villa won't be after a relatively unproven striker.
