I presume you forgot Canos seeing as you've only named 6 subs.

That would be my starting line. JJ instead of Moses I suspect on the bench.

The starting eleven picks itself now. The bench is more contentious as it's become our enforcers.

Yep, Canos as well. Jeanvier if Moses not fit for bench, but following 90 minutes for B team he can't be too far off a sub place.

We aren't not going to have a central defender on the bench even though barbet could cover. So Jeanvier will be on the bench. Would imagine same team and bench as for Wigan home game. Maybe Dean will swap Benhrama and Sergi

I think it'll be close but we'll stick with Benrahma.
He's more dangerous imo but has just has to refine himself positionally and build up understanding with the others.
So the more game time the better and if/when he gets knackered there's always Sergi.

Team picks itself at the moment unless there's fitness concerns or injuries. Smith says no fitness worries after tues so sure it will be..

Bentley.

Dalsgaard Konsa Mepham Barbet

Maceachran Macleod Sawyers

Benhrama Maupay Watkins

Subs: Daniels. Clarke, Jeanvier, Mokotjo, Canos, Judge. Yennaris

Arsenal game selection will be much more of a challenge! How do you rest key players without making the team significantly weaker?

I think you already know the answer to that question!

I reckon we’ll field a Carabao cup side against Arsenal, look at previous teams in this cup and I reckon we won’t be too far off.

Tempting though it is to keep picking our strongest 11 I think we will come by unstuck from fatigue if we don't rotate. I remember Smith admitting he had made this mistake after one defeat last season. For that reason I would test McEachran as he is obvious injury risk based on his record. I would also leave out Konsa and Benrahma, who dipped in last game, and bring back MacLeod plus Jeanvier and Canos

I think that would be a big mistake resting JM, he’s a very important part of how we play at the moment. We took him off early on Tuesday to manage his minutes so he should be fine for Sat. He’ll likely get a rest for the arsenal or reading games..

Derby will look to keep the ball at home, I think it’s important we stifle their ball playing game and press them so I would give Canos and Mokotjo a chance from the start.

It’s worth noting that Derby have some really skillful players that will hurt us if given space been midfield and defence (Mount, Lawrence etc) - so I think we could well need that extra deep midfielder. If we stick with MacLeod in an advanced role I think we might lose the match.

That’s good news, Mount will give us plenty of problems on his own if we are not careful though!
Bet they are thinking the same about 5 of our players :sorted:

Interesting. I'd been suggesting we might benefit from some top class players coming in for a day and advising us on what they did differently to make it to the very top. It appears they actually did invite Lampard in before!
“We’ve had Frank come in here before and do a talk to our players on his career, and what made him tick and the hard work that he’s put in to his career,” Smith added.

Just play whatever DS feels is the strongest team if all are fit. Surely these players dont need a rest already (except for maybe Daalsgard). I do think a couple need to be fired up for this one, especially with the likes of Rico and Moses soon to be waiting in the wings. Fanny about with selection next Wednesday as we have 2 important and very winnable home gaes in 6 days after.

Yeah i also found that very interesting. I wish Smith would stop being so inspiringly progressive!

What’s going on with all this scratching in pre-match interviews. Getting too much and beginning to bother me, difficult to focus on what he’s saying lol

I was in attendance. It was a fascinating talk, the contents of which will remain in the room, but I left it with an enhanced respect for him.

Sadly I missed the chat with Alex Ferguson as I was on Programme deadline!
