Brentford have completed the signing of teenage defender Dominic Thompson from Arsenal. The left-sided player, who turned 19 during pre-season, joined The Bees late last night. He signed a three-year contract after passing a medical and there is an option for an additional year.

Dominic is a North London lad who joined Arsenal at the age of 12. Previously a central midfield player, the 19-year-old has been playing at left back in Arsenal’s Academy set-up and was part of the team which reached the FA Youth Cup Final in 2018. He signed his first professional contract last summer and played for The Gunners in Premier League Two last season. Dominic played 13 games as Arsenal finished second in Premier League Two Division One last season.

Thomas Frank, Brentford FC Head Coach, said: “Dominic is a very talented young player and over the past two years the speed of his development has increased. He is a technically very good left back or left wing back. He can pass the ball well and deliver good crosses and he also has a very good mentality and wants to defend.

“Dominic is a player that can continue to develop, and all the coaching staff here are looking forward to helping him get to the next level while also competing with Rico Henry for our left wing back position.”

Phil Giles, Brentford FC Co-Director of Football, said: "We have been looking to add some strength to our full back options and we hadn't thought that Dom would become available until the very end of the window. When it became possible to sign him, we closed the deal quickly and we are very pleased that he has chosen to join Brentford in the next phase of his development."

Arsenal fans seem to be a bit annoyed about this. Hopefully good competition for Rico.

Lovely interview with Dom. Seems a very pleasant young man with, hopefully, a very bright future.

So glad we've addressed lack of LB cover, Field has not moved on quick enough i don't believe. Definitely addressed a weakness here.

Welcome aboard Dominic

I guess despite his age, the fact that TF is quoted means he is a first teamer from the off

Carry on at this rate we are going to need a new Welcome mat in Braemar Raod

What do we think the fee is for a deal like this? c£0.5-0.75m with a big sell-on % or completely different ballpark? Interesting to know what the top clubs look for in these sorts of deals.

A "nominal" £1m. No doubt there will be a sell-on too.

Thanks Nana. I must remember to use this new terminology next time I ask my nice bank manager for a loan. “Don’t worry, it’s only a nominal amount”.

This Thompson lad hasn't got the hang of it at all. Says he's delighted to be joining a 'big club'. Hasn't he done his research? :bees:

Welcome on board - loving the fact that most Arsenal fans are genuinely upset he has left. Rate him highly.

Brentford has nine letters, Arsenal has seven so we are a bigger club

The Arsenal fan reaction says something (as ran reaction often does...when it's not just spammed with memes), they felt he could play for them at some point. Even the posts that say 'he's not great at this' all end with 'I was expecting to see him play for us at some point'. Shrewd bit of business IMO...

Great piece of business. The AFC fans prove we’re onto a winner here.

Yep.

The one here is more upset that we have Thomson than he is happy about them signing SideShow Bob from Chelski

Lyall Thomas Tweeted saying £1m rising to £3m, Beesotted seconds later saying £3m plus add ons. I believe the former to be honest, makes more sense and it does seem to be based on more specific information.

Arsenal said a "nominal fee".
I don't think even they would say that if it was £3m up front.
£1m with addons seems much more likely.

How did football end up in a place where £1m is a nominal fee?

besotted brentford is reporting that it is thought to be a fee of £3million. surely that can't be correct, for a player that has never made a senior appearance?

edit: as usual I posted before reading and then realised everything I said was old hat.

Lyall Thomas has tweeted an initial £1m with addons making up a potential £3m.

This is an interesting one given Arsenal chose not to offer Bola a new contract last summer, presumably this was based on the fact they had another LB academy graduate at a similar age who would step up to their B/u23 side. I presume they went with what they felt was the 'better' option last summer and retained DT. The irony is were in for Bola last month and have ended up with lad who replaced him in their u23 side.

Like the fact that he is a converted midfielder, with a strong technical game. Should fit in perfectly at JR then.

Good Luck Dominic.
