The start was by no means fatal but I think the lineup was just a little bit too imbalanced and awkward for the personnel selected, especially along the back line.

Two left footed CBs, Roerslev at RB instead of RWB etc. Just didn’t look like a set up that was natural or had been practiced very much. Still, I felt there were some positive glimpses of promise from individuals and important minutes in the legs for some new arrivals and fringe players.

Obviously being 1-0 down and wanting to win the tie, Frank moved very early to bring on familiar faces and go to a back three. From then on we would always win the game, and even though it was nice to see I don’t think you can really read too much into the strong performances of starters like Canos, Onyeka, Ajer, Mbeumo etc. because they’re obviously a cut above Forest Green (although they looked better than L2 in many ways).

What I was more encouraged by in the second half was those that did well from the fringes of the first team; Alvaro looking good and Wissa and Forss scoring (for their confidence that will have been important and we might need rely on them later in the season).

Elsewhere, Dervisoglu looked good. And - in the second half as a wingback - Thompson was impressive as he had much more conviction in his forward runs. As a LB he fails too often to make the right decisions in when to push forward and when to keep his shape, but with his defensive responsibilities diminished he was able to be more aggressive and get into positions to utilise his excellent delivery. I do have my doubts over whether either of these players will feature much (or at all in PL) but we will see.

Who would have been the penalty taker if Canos had gone down instead of staying on his feet to assist the Forss goal?

FWIW I don't think any of the fringe players did enough to convince TF, let alone me, that they are likely to be anything more than fringe players. You Reds!

you sure, looks like a complete reserve team to me,

it is what it is, 9 changes, giving bit players a chance to show what they have but to be fair it’s a complete fekkin shambles.

Thompson again just not good enough, always out of position, got some horrible passes into horrible areas but doesn’t have a clue how to get out of trouble, not all his fault but is way short of the level needed IMO

Roeslev having his worst game for us since that Coventry shambles last season.

Ghoddos, enough now, we have given him so many chances, just a fat lump who blobs around doing nothing.

Halil again looks a really good player, would love to see him up top.

Wissa, looks like he has something but a bit headless at times. I think he will be a player for sure when he gets good players around him.

Forss, again hasn’t challenged for one 50/50 or header all night, when we put it forward it is a free header for the defenders every time, if he isn’t being set up with good chances he may as well not be there, reminds of vibe, good finisher but gives the defenders a free ride all night.

The players have got a chance to show they should be on the bench this season and at the moment only 2 or 3 look close,

bidsrup runs his nuts off but has given the ball away so much because there is no one around him,

it is only a kick about for us but Christ it is crap, the high press turning out defence into jelly and long balls just being collected by FGR unchallenged,

Boring to be honest with all the time wasting.
Just got home and reading the comments. Agree with about 90% of this based on the 1st half. My original comment was more of a surprise that we picked 2 first teamers plus a strong bench as I was expecting the majority of our starting XI to be given the night off.

Always enjoy going to these types of games, bit of pressure off, can actually watch the players a bit more and take it in. Of course, cant read too much into a performance against a L2 team but some positives to take, especially Wissa getting his first goal for the club, as well as the impact had by all the substitutes (as they should, but good to see they proved their worth).

On the flip.side, and I'm sure it's been said already but Thompson is not even close to being PL level. His crossing is good when he has some time & space. But then again, mine isn't too bad when I've got half a pitch to play with. Defensively he cannot be trusted and he looks clueless on the ball when he's under any kind of pressure. I just dont see even the potential there and it's a big concern if Rico gets injured.

Which leads me to the other negatives...MBS and Pinnock going off injured. Any word on those yet?

Have to stay it's fantastic to see young families and just generally lots of newish fans here today. Club must continue to grow and if they all embrace the values of our core fanbase then bring it on.

Expect to see a few apologies in this thread from those who posted earlier on, gving the last rites.
I am not apologising for my half time report, it was true. We made 9 changes from Saturday, change of formation and it was a mess and we were played off the park and lucky not to be 3 down, it happens in the cup and did first half tonight,

We brought 4 first team players on, changed formation and we smashed them second half and it could have been 5 or 6 in the end

But…..but…..Ghoddos is ‘just a fat lump who blobs around doing nothing’. Or something. Like making the assist for Wissa’s goal 🇮🇷

“Making Wissa’s goal” is stretching it a bit. He may have had the last touch before wissa twisted and turned and buried it but he hardly beat three players and put it on a plate. Ghoddos was poor first half, for a player who is pushing for the first team he looks unfit and slow and never did anything when we needed senior players to stand up. Second half slightly better when others around him were lifting the game.

I have supported him for a year waiting for him to hit the ground but he simply looks nowhere near good enough to me.

Sergi, Frank, Ajer and the formation change turned the game, Thompson was as good second half as he was bad the first but he wasn’t exposed and was bombing forward and causing havoc. A wing back, maybe left winger but defensively really struggled with positing and under pressure.

Halil must be gutted, he was very impressive but got hooked, he had a goal in him.

Wissa showing the quality second half too.

”Ghoddos, enough now, we have given him so many chances, just a fat lump who blobs around doing nothing”?

Apparently, one player is way short of the level needed and the other is a fat lump - correct?
Seems very Harsh on saman who is a good player but never been given a decent run in the side and im sure he isn't a fat lump as he wouldn't be considered for selection and would also be a failing of our fitness coaches.
It is far better to get behind our players and back them and slag them off as he isn't the only brentford player who hasn't had a great game.

I normally enjoy reading your input Mhead, but I think your comment above is poor about one of our own players.

You're better than that.

Maybe a bit over the top about one of our own players. But he is heavy and slow and a real disappointment so far.

I thought Janelt showed his class and was a cut above the rest. Wissa put in a shift and nice to see him score. Poor performance from Dervisoglu IMO and I agree with comments above re. Ghoddos still (Still!?) looking unfit although he had some nice touches.

Was impressed with Forest Green Rovers in first half but deserved win in the end.

I think most of the players we expected to look good did...and some predictable ones weren't quite up to scratch.

Thompson looked good, happy to have him stick around! Bidstrup wasn't great but I know that he normally looks better. Wissa has something about him but will need a fair amount of time to adapt IMO. Canos changed the game (along with Onyeka) and made me like him even more.

A very enjoyable second half! We played some great stuff and they just couldn't handle us. Good to see how seriously Thomas was taking it by making those half time substitutions.

Spot on, very dissappointing in this respect. Did not come away tonight thinking any of the fringe players should be starting. Bit of a worry as some of them may be called upon during the season, just not good enough tonight.

But you can’t just throw them in for a one-off and expect a 10/10 performance though. Tonight will have been useful for match fitness.

Thing is, fringe players playing in a team of fringe players don't always look that great. But when you have to slip the odd one in here and there to cover in the first team, they can often be surprisingly effective. I think we'll be just fine. ;)

Agreed but, of the fringe players, I'm struggling to think of an 8/10.

That’s a fantastic crowd and in the top ten for a home league cup tie!
Bit better than Brum just over 4 1/2 thousand with a mighty 100 from the Victoria sponge brigade.

Don't wish to criticise harshly as the entire team was disjointed before HT subs changed it but...Roerslev and Bidstrup were utterly brutal to the point their replacement was a big factor in the contrast in the uptick in performance. Some of it was due to lack of options from others, sure, but Roerslev in particular was struggling with the basics.

Actually, off the top of my head I can only think of Norwich in the late 1960s, Swansea in 1982 and Liverpool a year later being bigger.

Thought Saman was impressive this evening. He seems stronger in possession and his distribution is quicker and more incisive. But he seemed reluctant to take a shot - but he wasn’t the only one.

At this point in the season we should take a moment and think back to the negative stuff people posted about Romaine and Maupay - and Jensen too. It doesn’t help. This is the month when players are finding their feet and learning about eachother. A lot of these ’fringe players’ like the 3 Mads, and Saman, will be called on later in the season. Give them time.
