England cricket one day and 20/20 squad

Can't see a thread on this, so here goes.

Squad just announced

Capt: Collingwood
Bat: Cook, Bell, Pietersen, Trott, Shah
A-R: Yardy, Mascarenhas
WK: Prior
Bowl: Panesar, Anderson, Plunkett, Broad, Sidebottom

I'd imagine that we would leave out Trott or Shah, one all-rounder and one of the seamers each time.

Haven't seen enough of Trott to have a view on him. Mascarenhas looks a good bowler (who can bat a bit) in English conditions, and could do well against a poor WI team, but not sure how he'd be on good pitches abroad if we're looking to the future.

Batting doesn't seem too bad (down to 7 anyway) but bowling looks vulnerable

A few surprises there, although another son of Cape Town and Chiswick's very own convict are just the latest in a long trend, I guess!

I'm unpersuaded that Yardy and Shah have what it takes.

Cook and Prior will certainly open and I would expect Pietersen at four and Collingwood at five, as in the WC.

Mascarenhas will play and I reckon Panesar and Broad will be two certainties in the attack, the rest is open to debate.

Saw it on TV, His bowling looked OK in the circumstances: 1-13 off 2 overs, when Surrey were chasing 72 off 10 overs, with Brown, Benning, Ramprakash et al, wasn't a bad return, but he seemed to bat a little early (possibly as he was captaining them). At international level, I'd say he's more a No 8 than a No 7, but I'd expect him to have to bat at 7 because we probably need 4 other specialist bowlers - unless we play Yardy at 7

England have left Bell, probably injured, Plunkett and Panesar out.

England: A Cook, M Prior (wkt), IJ Trott, K Pietersen, P Collingwood (capt), O Shah, D Mascarenhas, M Yardy, R Sidebottom, S Broad, J Anderson.

I hope if this was a 50 over match they would have picked Panesar, hopefully at the expense of Yardy.

The problem is, many of our contracted players are not very experienced at 20 / 20 so I guess this is an opportunity to see how good they are.

It's a tough call as the best players should be the best players no matter what game they play, and international players have not played county Twenty20 so haven't had the chance to prove themselves in the way the players you name have.

I would want Trescothick, Flintoff, Collingwood, Pietersen and Panesar in any England team for any game but I suspect they don't have good county Twenty20 records :shrug:

Enough talent to play international cricket but it's not all there for some reason.

Well I hope he doesn't end up crossing the Thames like Ramps did. I know I'm biased, but Shah isn't fit to lace Ramps's boots and there's no way that he will rack up as many runs and centuries in the next ten years as Ramps has in the last.

Somebody in the commentary box made a similar comment but was put down by the statistician. You'd be surprised if you have a look compared to some of the names you mention.

i'm more concerned about the bowling........ it was 8+ an over... then i got a round in and no acceleration from WI.... 2 wts from Ryan, but still... 180 was a min from along way out... did we close out well or did the WI miss out...

England bowled a bit better, but the difference from the first game was probably that WI lost Smith and Chanderpaul and the 2 youngsters didn't look up to it. The more experienced players could well have got another 12-15 runs in the same time and that might have put it beyond England (though of course we've been missing players - esp Flintoff - in both games)

International Twenty20 will see scores of 180+ on decent pitches, like we saw at The Oval, anyone going for around 8 is doing a good job IMHO :shrug:

Edmundo and I were saying Gayle has to take some responsibility for the result, Shah was hitting everything behind square and he kept third man and fine leg up, if one or two boundaries had been turned into twos we probably wouldn't have got home.

I think we're going to struggle in this one-day series unless someone takes responsibility for the runs, and to be honest it has to come from the top four, leaving it to five and six will not win matches.
