Jude Bellingham called up......really????

Have England had a player who can drop a shoulder, run from his own half and turn a defence toward their own goal like Jack Grealish since Gazza, I know he isn’t a Gazza but do we have anyone else like this who can earn 10 free kicks in England danger territory.

However I expect we will see Phillips Henderson, cork, mount and all the other negative side way passers.

Have we another forward who runs the channels and turns defences like Watkins other than vardey who has been discarded? What has Jude B done?

Anyway, why are we playing these upgraded friendlies this season.

Maddison and Harvey Barnes should’ve been called up rather than Bellingham.

There’s no justification for playing any international football other than the Euro 2020 play-offs at the moment

Jude Bellingham is a regular starter for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League. Just 17 years of age. Potentially a generational talent. Given the lack of attacking impetus in midfield from some of the regulars you mention I can’t see his inclusion as a negative thing.

Find it strange you would criticise our forwards as well. Kane, Sterling, Rashford, DCL, Abraham, Sancho would be the envy of almost every other national team.

The negative double pivot in midfield I can understand the frustration. Less about personnel (we have Grealish, Foden and Mount) than it is about Southgate’s selections. Hope he scraps it for something more positive.

If you’re going to have the Euros next summer then National Teams needs these camps to prepare. Maybe scrapping the tournament would have been better but no one wants to lose money.

They don't 'need' them. They could easily adapt and go into the tournament off the back of a revised schedule in the same way the rest of football has had to adapt. There's no justification for players to be needlessly criss-crossing countries for international friendlies and even less for the Nations League to be going ahead.

As ever it’s all about the money.
National federations can’t afford to miss out on the TV monies due for these meaningless friendlies/nations league games. Opting out would mean losing this cash and incurring the wrath of UEFA.
Not saying it’s right, just the way it is.
No one is far sighted enough to realise that the overall impact (other than risk to players) is to further devalue non-tournament internationals in the eyes of the ‘consumer’ and therefore lessen the TV monies in years to come.

That's certainly part of it.

The friendly against ROI is an exception, in that neither team is involved in a Euro Qualifier play-off this week, like eg Scotland or NI, both of whom have huge games at the same time.
Whilst the 2 other England games are Nations League, itself an attempt to replace Friendlies with "tournament" internationals.

Tbh, UEFA/FIFA are in a cleft stick, since as well as the need to raise money, they also need to support the international game in the face of the ever-grasping club game.
But in doing so by eg introducing the NL, they fall foul of the "Bigger doesn't necessarily mean better" rule which you correctly identify.

Of course, the clubs could do their bit for this too, eg by reducing the PL to 18 teams; accepting slimmed down Champions League and Europa League tournaments; scrapping ludicrous pre- and post-season tours to the Far East etc.

Is Cork in the squad, Phillips is not in squad either as he's injured. Jude B is currently regularly playing for a top team and champions league team from Germany and wouldn't consider him a sideways passer either.

England's 1000th match v Ireland?
Not exciting at all is it?
Pretty sure Belgium will be ready this Sunday.
Wonder where the Iceland game will be played?

Joe Gomez seriously injured in training. Predictable and utterly avoidable. I can only imagine what state these squads/players will be in come the Euros in June.

Don't see any criticism of our forwards in my post, more about what players like Watkins and Vardy bring that the others don't, the running the channels and turning defences.

But f you want some, here it is.

Kane, our only truly world class player.
Sterling is a very good wide player who gets goals.
Rashford is very quick but makes bad decisions and I wouldn't even bet each way on him scoring a 1 on 1.
Abraham, scored a few for Chelsea at the beginning of last season, what else has he done since?
Sancho, seems to be another one off the conveyor belt of young England players that all seem to play in the same position, attacking midfielders that seem to have an abundance of potential but never really does it for England.

As for the midfield we definitely agree. It is pointless having any decent forwards if we have a complete safety net in midfield who can't create, set up or start a decent attack. Two holding midfielders and sideways plodders and the forwards are wasted.

Real shame for him, but to be honest he isn't international class. Has looked awful for Liverpool every time I have seen him.

Good news.

Probably why he won't start and won't get brought on when it is deathly dull at 75 mins.

How many times is the commentator going to mention Calvert Lewis’s clothes and fashion taste. That must be the 8th or 9th time he has gone on about it.

Just shut up man.
Very annoying.

Genuinely only realised we were playing now when I read to the end of this thread. I really could not care less about friendlies.

Very comfortable win for England, played on the front foot most of the game. Commentators were awful as usual

Sam Matterface is dreadful.
Doesn't commentate on the match at all just reads out long anecdotes from his crib sheet. Combined with director showing replays while the games going on just leaves me ranting at the telly.

This has creeped far too much into games and Sky have also been doing it. The worst offender is when they show a replay of an event leading up to a corner and by the time they switch back to the match, it’s already been taken.

Big decision coming up for Southgate as to whether he plays the in form Grealish in place of a bigger name and more experienced player. Doubt he will though.

Sterling and Kane will definitely play. Then it's a straight choice between Grealish and Sancho. Either way we've got a very talented front 3.

I’ve no idea who Phillips Henderson is and I’ve certainly no desire to see him cork or mount anyone ! 🤮

Remember him playing against us as a kid (for Notts County, on loan) and thought he looked a bit special even then.
:imwith:
I think he came on as a sub and looked so comfortable on the ball. One of the best opposition players I've seen in a league game at GP.

Drives me mad, can't discuss a player on the bench or manager without the camera lingering on them while a script is read out.Sometimes you can guess where the ball is from where they're looking. Goals are followed by replays from every camera in the ground, eventually you cut back to the play which restarted about thirty seconds ago. Sometimes they miss important action and have to show it in a replay and miss another important bit of action, which they replay and so on ad infinitum. I think its the only major sport where the camera cuts away from the action while it is going on.WHY?????

Because nearly every other sport has frequent breaks in play - eg Rugby (esp), Tennis, Golf, Cricket etc. And didn't I read somewhere that American Football can take 3 hours to play a one hour game? (Don't watch it myself)

That said, you're quite right, with "proper" football it is both infuriating and unncessary.
