Squad just announced. No surprise to see the return of the old guard but really interested to see Harry Brook and Matty Potts. Potts looks a real prospect from what I've seen in county this year. Craig Overton though - doesn't look a test cricketer to me and Zak Crawley needs runs as he's had a terrible start to the season.

England squad: Ben Stokes (Durham, captain), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Jack Leach (Somerset), Alex Lees (Durham), Craig Overton (Somerset), Matthew Potts (Durham), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Joe Root (Yorkshire).

Three observations from me. Ollie Robinson not in the squad - a bit of a surprise but probably needs to get fitter. Not seen his stats in county cricket this year mind you. Not convinced Jack Leach is the way forward for England. He has two balls, his stock delivery and a bad ball. Good however to see some fresh young faces. Let’s see how they get on.

Chuffed for Harry Brook, he's had a cracking start to the season! Could be a real asset for County & Country.

Robinson seems to be a general fitness issue and I gather he will need to improve his overall fitness to be considered again. A shame because he has proven that he can take wickets. Agree about Leach but can't see any alternatives - I guess this goes back to the "state of English red ball cricket" conversation which isn't going to be fixed overnight.

Not sure Yorkshire would agree about it being good for county - if he proves as good as he looks in County at international level, they may well lose him for a long time.

Very deserved call up for Brook, Parkinson is extremely unlucky not to be there.

Parkinson is an odd one - he has spent plenty of time in the international set up now without being given a chance so they must have concerns, Bowls too slowly?

Will be interesting to see how Ben Compton continues this season. Yes, he is part of the Compton family and has made a late breakthrough to County Cricket being 28 now but has started this season on fire for a not very good Kent side. Opens the batting and appears to value his wicket like cousin Nick.

The form county batman at the moment. Maybe he could end up our Devon Conway.

Ollie Pope at Number 3

A bit of a gamble there.....
Would be too much of a gamble IMHO, especially as he's only started batting no. 4 for Surrey this season. According to Strauss in February Joe Root told the then selection panel that he wanted to bat no. 3 in the Caribbean and beyond:

I don't know, though, if Root has said anything contrary to that, which I may have missed, since he resigned the captaincy.

Pope was batting at 4 for Surrey last season as well

I thought that he mainly batted at 5 or 6 last season, but I may be mistaken.
Having just checked this, it would appear that I was indeed mistaken. as Ollie Pope did bat at number 4 for Surrey last season, so apologies to CTBee. I must have been thinking of the 2020 season!

Having said that, I still think that it would be too big a jump for him to move up to no. 3 for England (if selected) as he could potentially (indeed, quite possibly!) be coming in to face the 2nd ball of the innings. I think that Joe Root should stay at 3, given the squad that they've selected.

Still looks a bit light on runs to me but my cricket knowledge isn't what it used to be. I'd love Livingstone in the team but probably won't happen

LL’s in the one day squad which is playing Holland 3 times in Amsterdam this month instead.

long long tail... and whilst an excellent keeper, Foakes isn't a Matt Prior or Johnny Bairstow with the bat. Indeed he is really an eight based on his test record with the blade.

Is this from Foakes’ tinder profile?

Brooks!!! Got to take advantage of his form! What better time to blood a youngster than when he's bang on it? Opportunity missed for England and for player.

I wouldn't read too much into Foakes' test average at the moment. He's only played 11 tests and none of them have been in England. He's also batted at number 5 for Surrey in first class cricket for a number of years now and done very well. In fact he's averaging 98 in the County Championship this season.

With a decent run in the team I'm confident his test batting average will start moving in the right direction.

16,000 unsold tickets for the first 4 days apparently.

Yep and you can see on the Lords website hundreds of tickets available today and tomorrow but nothing under £110 for adults or children.

Tickets for most stands should be £60/£70 max for adults and £10/£20 for kids. Maybe do a family ticket for £150 (2 adults and 2 kids).

Terrible advert for test cricket having the first home test of the summer played in front of a half full ground.

I reckon about 4000 tickets are available for Saturday. The Saturday of a Lords test used to be nearly impossible to get tickets for. Is this because given the last couple of years no one is confident of us reaching the 3rd day?

Agree tickets are too expensive but there's still going to be close to 30,000 there for each of the first four days, more than you'd get for any ground in the country or venue around the world hosting test cricket, barring Australia.

Kane Williamson has won the toss, and New Zealand will bat first.

Jimmy Anderson gets his 19,324th wicket in his 33rd year of playing. Well that's what it feels like.
