Root’s played 20 Tests in 18 months?! When did he last play for Yorkshire?
(Has Smith been banned again?)
These are test matches played by Root since Jan 2021:

I suspect Smith’s numbers are so low because of Australia’s Covid restrictions.

And another one! Buttler behind the stumps would’ve turned that into a 6 not a W.

Not sure why NZ didn’t pick Patel. Would have been far more effective on this flat pitch than Bracewell. Let’s see.

If England can bowl NZ out by the first hour of tomorrow morning then I can see certainly England going for the target as long as it is under 270ish. Still a lot of cricket to be played.
Four minutes to bowl them out …

Are they going to be giving Crawley the whole series? He has one half decent score in 4 innings this test series so far and has failed to get a score on this pitch which is a good pitch for batting. Surely there is someone better out there

I have a real problem with him, always have but he just looks like a child playing test cricket, mentally weak or so it seems and looks like a kid in braces walking off and shaking his head each time. Obvious talent but …..

Agreed. His bamboozlement with his dismissal in the first innings was strange to see. I thought this test would be good for the unestablished batsmen to build confidence and get a decent score but another opportunity passes him by. I don't follow the county game so unsure of any other openers out there that haven't already been tried and failed

His Kent team mate is currently averaging over a 100!

Whatever the result, the fans in Nottingham are going to get a great free days entertainment.
Hats off to the ECB,they could have charged a tenner entrance fee and still have got a decent attendance.

3 down now - what to do? Keep on going for the win or take time out of the game now? We're basically sh*t from 6 down so I'd be tempted to not give the win a lot of thought from here.

The only problem with the new Compton on the block is that he has a strike rate in the mid 30s at a guess. Good old school batting rate but doesn't seem to fit in modern test cricket. A bit like his cousin? Nick

Hang on. I've got Eoin Morgan on one shoulder saying to me "Are you mad?" and Sir Geoffrey Boycott on the other saying "By 'eck lad, you talk a lot of sense."

Spoken by a part-time cricket fan who just dips in occasionally and these are the first two names which came to mind...

England have got their best two batsmen in for a chase but equally if one or both go then a long tail awaits.

Too many chances being taken but Bairstow can’t play time without being on the attack I suppose.

All about the wickets here, 100 off the last 20 overs won't phase us providing we have wickets in hand.

If we are either 4 or 5 down with 100 to get we won't change our approach.

After that I'm not sure as we have a very long tail with Potts at 8 who bats at 10 for Durham.
From what I've seen of Potts I'd have him batting at 12. Confident young man in the field, turns to jellyfish with the bat.

Do they play until all overs are bowled or will play finish at 6.30 regardless?

Surprised Bracewell isn't bowling, looked a lot more dangerous than Leach did and caused Stokes' problems in the first innings.

Stunning counter from Bairstow and England. The McCullum effect.
I must say also stupid bowling from New Zealand. Continuing to bowl short with a short boundary.
