Well after a bright start we have just lost 2 quick wickets and are currently 60-2. Need KP and Cook to shore things up as we should rack up 400 against a much depleted Pakistan batting line-up.

Pietersen gone now too :(

A pretty poor morning after winning the toss.

We'll probably be all out for 350, having scored at 5 an over, just after tea

Better than 80 odd for 3 but a lot of work still to do by these two, Bell and Jones.

If it's already turning we are looking down the barrel unless we get 400.

Whatever happened to Key? Is he injured?

He looked decent a while back, notching a couple of centuries. Why hasn't the bloke got a look in for ages?

The H said:
has been injured, but lost his place because he didn't take advantage of being in the seat.

:imwith:

Scored 221 against WI in 2004, the highest score by an England batsman for 14 years, but didn't get to 100 again and barely passed 50.

Got out in South Africa stupidly when well set a couple of times and that was that.

Still a capable batsman and is probably somewhere near the next in line, with possibly Shah ahead, but as Mr H says, didn't take his chance.

161-3 at present.

These two need to put on another 100 or so in my opinion to put the pressure back on the oppo. :sorted:

On a first day pitch once you get in, Mr Strauss :mad1:, there is no reason to get out.

One huge partnership takes you a long way towards a good score, would be good for these two if this is it.

Would also give these two chaps a real chance to cement their ashes place. :sorted:

And the more immediate future.

One of Cook, Collingwood and Bell will be dropped when Flintoff comes back, as England will never drop Strauss despite his paucity of runs recently. These two are in the driving seat now, a big score for each and they are in for the series, and then probably The Ashes.

All going rather well now, 219-3 with both batsmen in and looking towards centuries. Should be 370 odd by close of play.

A very good partnership between these two.

We need at least one to go onto a big hundred and we'll have a competitive total :sorted:

I think 400+ is well on the cards at the moment. Think Jones needs runs and fast if he wants to survive through to the Ashes.

309-3 at the close. The run rate slowed down quite a bit as they approached their tons, but if either (or both) of Cook and Colly can go onto a really big score, then Pakistan could be looking down the barrell by the end of tomorrow. Good news that Hoggy made the side - and a bit more time for his recovery too!

Must be looking for 450 from here as a minimum. I just hope the partnership isn't broken early as I think the innings may subside otherwise.

Well, these two are probably competing with Ian Bell for two places in the Second Test as Flintoff will return. So it's time for Bell to show he's not the nearly man and make the selectors think long and hard about Andrew Strauss.

A dodgy start but a great day. Glad that we put together a sizable partnership and we can build from here.

As Ed says these two still have something to prove, one huge score here cements a place for The Ashes, and Bell and Jones have everything to prove.

If we can bat through until tea, or maybe beyond we should have put ourselves in a very strong position.

Anything less than 450 would be a huge disappointment IMHO.

Cook was sh*tting himself approaching the ton and admitted it afterwards but I think he has the makings of a top quality Test batsman and I should imagine Boycott was creaming himself today.

As I bought his runs for the match at 77, I was also reasonably pleased with Imran Farhat's performance today. :D

So you think 141 for 7 is acceptable ????

From this position anything less than 550 is a disappointment !!

It's not really like that when you have lost three of the top four though is it

As I said less than 450 would be a hug disappointment and IMHO 500 should be the bear minimum from here but 450 would at least give us a reasonable platform.

500 will be par score on this pitch. :sorted:
Pakistan have some excellent batsmen in their line up and some who can score quickly.
Remember Sri Lanka made 500 odd in their 2nd innings at Lords so the pitch may not do much come the final innings.
Perhaps Monty could be the key come 4th / 5th days. :hat:

Im not sure I would agree that 500 is a par score TBH. I would say 400 is more a par score and 500 effectively means we can't lose the game.

:imwith: 500 can never be described as a par score, regardless of the pitch.

You have to take into account that Pakistan are without 3 first choice bowlers (Akhtar, Naveed & some other chappie) being the absentees. That said we have a couple of battie boys missing too.
Maybe I was slightly incorrect and perhaps 495 will be par for the course. :fishing:

371-4, carrying off where we left yesterday with Collingwood scoring quickly and Bell speeding to 24*. Not wanting to bok him but it would be really interesting if Bell went on and scored a century today, who would be left out in the next test

Would be superb for him and for the team. I have said before England batsmen tend not to make huge, match winning, hundreds.

Be good to change that.

Or Plunkett ??

Surely the point of Flintoff is to have a top class bowler who can bat in the top six and balance the team.

Dropping Plunkett is a fudge, they wouldn't have dropped Jones or Giles last year so shouldn't drop a bowler this year.

Maybe but if collingwood bowls, then that is an option

Bits and pieces cricketers do not win Test series against the premier nations, England in the 1990's proved that.
Collingwood is proving himself as a Test quality batsman, his bowling is pretty unthreatening.

What do you do when Simon Jones returns, whenever that may be. The decision has to be made at some point.

If the selectors don't have the balls to drop one of their batsmen then they shouldn't be in the job.

Just about to start after lunch.

426-4, Collingwood 179* Bell 43*

Another excellent morning and TBH it seems as if we can bat until we want to stop. Expect a flurry of wickets :D
I would be in favour of batting normally until tea and maybe having a dash for an hour afterwards to see how many we can get.

We should definitely put them tonight if we are in a position to do so.

I'd declare at tea when Collingwood will be 210 and England 533

I hope we don't hear any criticism of Jones if he is out cheaply looking for quick runs.
