We have just played 8 games in February (or in 25 days), won 5 lost 3. Probably would have taken that start of Feb. The amount of games we have played in such a short time frame and still be top 2 is remarkable. The most pleasing thing is that our bench was strong today - we had options and come out of February a stronger squad that when we entered it, although losing Rico is a blow.

I honestly think we will win on Wednesday.

Will be in the top 2 mix until the very end and get more points than last season - whether it is enough remains to be seen

Our last four games are against teams who could quite possibly be in the play off mix, so not easy games. But maybe we might get lucky and they'll be certain of a play off place when we come to play them and be resting key players in preparation.

After Sheffield I said we need ten wins out of the remaining fourteen games to get automatically promoted. One down and nine to go.

Winning and losing are habits. After the losing streak, it is so good to get a couple of wins under our belt. It’s one game at a time, but it does feel like a season when there are no stand-out teams in this division, so fingers crossed that we can put a strong run together again now for the remaining games and grab this division by the scruff of the neck this season. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though...COYB.

Just repeating my comments from the Brian Riemer interview thread here:

Where we are currently (regardless of what the outcome of the season is) is remarkable.
To end the season as we did - missing out on promotion by the autos AND the play-offs; which resulted in the shortest pre-season of any team in the country; to sell £55M worth of players; to move to a new ground and to STILL be where we are is incredible.

Yet there's still a sense of disappointment/under-achievement from some Bees fans who seem to have discounted all of this..........

If we actually manage to get promoted this year I think it would be an absolutely fantastic achievement!!!

I think our chance of auto promotion has gone not because we lost at Norwich but due to Barnsley, QPR and Coventry not to mention those games we should have won but conceded silly goals to only draw. Hope we can still make play offs and make fist of it this time

And there goes the most negative post of the week.

We are second and you hope we may still make the play off's, good grief.

The fact we lost some games with a weakened team but since having the full squad back won 2 before losing to the top side Norwich doesn't carry any weight with you?

My concern is for how many more seasons can we continue to challenge for promotion if we fail to go up this year with having to sell on our best players while inspired recruitment gets harder esp post Brexit. Yes, it would be a fantastic achievement and beyond the dreams of many on here who have been supporting the Bees through thick and thin for so many years and yet not quite old enough to have enjoyed the halcyon days of the 30's when we were last in the top flight. I'm hoping, as we all are, that we get automatic promotion and still confident that we will achieve that goal. COYB's.

I really hope that those more positive than I are correct, nobody more than I wish for Brentford to reach the Premier League. Yes we are second but Swansea have two games in hand. I wish I could buy into the "Blue Skies Philosphy" of some.

I hate VAR anyway. Would prefer to win a cup and get into Europe that way. Only want to get in Top Tier to say we’ve got there in my lifetime, which will happen soon. Just don’t feel it will be this season now. I think Swansea aren’t all that and Watford , like naaaarch, have largely retained their top flight squad and have the luxury of the parachute millions. It will be what it will be. I ain’t going to lose any more sleep over it. You reds.

you dont need to :

top scorers
top scorer
best unbeaten run

etc etc etc

"hope we can still make the play offs " isn't a sensible jitter

Herculean effort needed between now and the end of the season to attain top 2.
On top of the performances that has got us there in the first place.
If they do it then clucking bell.
If not then we could not have asked for more.
This has been an unbelievable season and it ain't over yet.

I mentioned on the 538 thread but are people aware that it's Watford vs Swansea on the last day of the season? :censored:
Hopefully sorted before then but that may be very handy

At least they are now very unlikely to both be sitting in the top 2 above us, ready to stitch us up somehow.
Unless one is out of the running and rests 10 players for the play-offs...

Or we could be 4 points clear of both and this talk is irrelevant - or we could be 4 points behind or, or, or

Last season it was the games we should have won but instead lost 1-0. To have turned those to draws is what has put us now in 2nd rather than 5th/6th as we were last season. Even then, last season with a great run we came mighty close to 2nd. We don’t need quite such a run to go one better this season and unlike last season, we don’t need anything like it to cement a place in the play offs. Even relegation form of a point a game will probably give us top 6. Indeed, if over the games ahead of the international break we do drop away a little it isn’t the end of the world. That’s basically what Villa did in 18-19 when they realised they were out of contention for top 2 while having been challenging much of the season and looked like they’d given up but instead were well prepared for the play offs. Ironically if we approach the rest of the season right we might be best placed to break our playoff record. We would be going into them under-rated but with everyone fit and available rather than having to lift a deflated squad after missing 2nd on the last day as last year, 2013 and 2002.

Yep, agree with that, and really thought that this year was going to be the year we struggled to compete, based on the reasons outlined in my original post.
As I said, to have managed to get where we now are, after all that, is remarkable!!! :bounce:
To get over the line would be extraordinary!!! 🤩

Regardless of the result on Wednesday night, I still maintain on our day we are the best side in this league. We are competing with 3 sides that came down and not really changed the personnel of their squad that much.

Our achievements to date like you said has been remarkable. We went what 21 games unbeaten and unbeaten throughout December playing 9 games.

I get what @rodders is saying to a degree. We were poor second half against Rangers and poor against Coventry giving silly goals away. Those were points dropped but we are still 2nd and unless Swansea win their next two games before we play Blackburn next Friday, I expect us to say in the top 2 and confident we will win tomorrow.

At the start of the season I didn't think we would get autos, still don,t due to parachute payments and having to rebuild again.
I thought we would probably make playoffs, but not win them, based on a 25% chance of winning that we have cut in half.
I would still see this as a very good season given the restrictions we have (no PP, small ground)
Premier league would help MB get back his investment, but would it be a good watch having the team battling to get points
look at Fulham,West Brom,Sheff Utd all bigger clubs but struggling to get points, imagine giving Premier League teams a goal start!
It would be nice to get one pop at PL, but I am happy being competitive and staying in the championship.

I always thought top 6 would be respectable and still on target for that. Top 2 very much still within our reach. We are 2nd after all! Lol
We need to tighten up at the back, and get a good run of say 4 wins to get the confidence back in the team and then see where we are after that.

Last time I looked with 12 games and 36 points still to play for we were second? Do you think that a team with less points and 2 games extra over q4 games means we’ve blown it?

Probably obvious but I only just realised, by the time we next play, Swansea will have played both their games in hand and will be back to a straight shoot out.

Doesn’t concern me in the slightest, we replaced Watkins with better from the same country, in fact we replaced Donaldson with gray and hogan all from the UK.

If the pool shrinks in Europe we will will still be fishing in the same pond as the rest and finding the ones they can’t see. Maybe we will expand the search outside Europe.

I genuinely think we have what it takes to go up this season but I wonder if once again the luck and the gods are turning against us. We need to show we have what we didn’t have at the end of last season and today I am not so sure, I get tired of hoping and praying and watching it crumble and the players need to show us we have no reason to feel like this.

if we do fail then I will be absolutely delighted to get in the new ground and watch is do it next season.

Christ almighty, “blue sky philosophy”??????????????

You are hoping we manage to avoid the biggest collapse in the history of this football club as we go from 21 games unbeaten, being second for about a month to losing virtually every game as we fall out of the play offs being over taken by teams we have done the double over and stuck 3-4 goals past,

Good lord, if thinking we may avoid the above is blue sky philosophy what the bloody f*** would you call winning 8 of our last 12 and going up.

We have already achieved more than my expectation before the start of the season. However, I now hope that we will finish the season two places higher than we will probably find ourselves at around 5.00pm today.

After a bit of a breather, we go again!
Players refreshed, others getting over their injuries ...... then start of a 12 match unbeaten run!
We go up Automatically :sorted:

I am thinking of starting a thread complaining about use of TAPs for our games at Old Trafford, Anfield etc. next season in the hope that it will absorb all the negativity recently seen on the GPG.

All to play for. Last 12 has always been the time to step up. We've probably had our wobble. Others will. It's down to us with 36 points to play for.

There's always a lot of batshit results in the run-in, we just need to be involved into the last few fixtures and hope we have everyone back fit. Quite relaxing today, I'd like Swansea to lose but nothing to worry about if they win.

The next month or two will be the usual roller coaster no doubt. So many peoples opinions change like the wind as each round of results go for or against us. I’m sure with us not playing today all the others will win but that doesn’t mean our automatic hopes are over !!
If we are to go up automatically we will need a lot of luck with injuries , something we havnt had recently.
All squads are stretched at the moment but it’s the loss of the really key players that’s hurting . We papered over the loss of Pontus and Noorgard so well and Janelt and Sorenson deserve huge credit particularly Janelt , but can you imagine taking on Norwich the other night with Rico bombing down the left , a fully fit Norgaard sweeping danger up in the midfield , Pontus at the back and perhaps most importantly DaSilva moving the ball as he does so well through the midfield and into the danger areas.
Wouldnt guarantee a win of course but I’m pretty confident we’d have given Norwich far more to think about than we did.
So I think our chances rest pretty much on getting at least 3 of those 4 back fully firing and of course avoiding any more lengthy lay offs for the really vital players, if we can do that and stay in touch over the next few games (maybe a few more postponements might help !!) then anything is possible , with our strongest starting 11 playing well I’d back us against anyone so maybe after all these years we might actually finally do it via the playoffs by beating Swansea at Wembley .

2nd is still doable but I think it would be worth working on the psychology needed to smash the play offs rather than to bet everything on 2nd and be once again deflated and easy to pick off by a careful and negative game plan. If their heads are in the right place they are good enough to enter the play offs positively and without fear. They should be looking at them as an achievement and a challenge they are up to meeting, not a failure.

Loved his Tubular Bells!

Seriously though, I think that is needed. Lots of comments about injuries and tiredness recently, but most teams have that problem. I maintain it's all between the ears for our boys, particularly after last season and confirmed by BR's interview.

I think if we had played today and won which I fully expected us to we would still have been 2nd and not as disappointed with the results as we all are right now. Long run having today off will benefit us and can see us raring to go on Friday night.

Swansea I still don't regard as a threat for the top 2. Every time I have seen them since turn of the year they have been relatively poor and extremely lucky. Barnsley are on some run but can't see it lasting. Let's not forget we are in a better position this year than last year. None of the results today have changed my mind that we won't finish top 2.
