Who was it who played their gold disc and it turned out not to be their record? I suppose you could also tell by comparing the grooves.

It depends big-time on the record itself.
After 1964, each record that hit enough sales spawned between 10-40 gold mounted discs. In some cases it could be even more; supposedly in many cases each person involved in the record could get as many as 13+ gold discs.
Some gold discs are for sale for around £4-5, but some are over £100 and a Kiss one sold for about £1500 pretty recently.
Bear in mind that in many cases the gold disc won't actually be the record it was presented for.

Thank you for your expert opinion..ive had it looked at and been told around 500.im gona keep it for now as its given me lots of luck..im a big gambler and allways rub it when I leave the house...be lucky folks...bees to stay up.but only just...
