Good result but the game turned on Sterling scoring at a time when Croatia were threatening to take a grip on the game. It altered the dynamic for a while but Croatia regained control of the mid. Typical hype going on about our performance. Phillips was excellent in mid but Mount has a habit of going absent for periods and Rice just seems to be absent. How the team needed Grealish to take on a player and open the game up and introduce some creativity. IMO if we are to progress we have to accommodate Grealish or it will be a familiar story. I don't get the Trippier thing either. Shaw would have been better IMO.

Post-match interviewer to Sterling (didn't catch the name):

"Have you justified your selection?"

Wtf? I thought Sterlings reaction - or lack of - was admirable (he just smiled bemusedly).

Had it been me, I think it might have been:

1. I didn't select myself;
2. You might ask the person who did;
3. Of course I bloody did - now sod off, you fool.

I think as soon ask she asked that question she realised, by Sterling's reaction. She then answered her own question by saying "of course you did". 😆

The first time England have won their opening fixture in the Euros. Can’t argue with that.
Phillips, Sterling and Mings impressed me.
Mount did a good job keeping Modric quiet. He had to collect the ball from the CBs in the end.

Tournament football is about pacing yourself.
Yep first opening win after 9 failures. 10th time lucky. Ring any bells?
It’s in the stars. Come on England.

Can’t believe some of the negativity here; we’ve just deservedly won a Euros opener for the first time ever - and done it against a top side, that were WC finalists last time out and knocked us out having outplayed us in the same tournament.

And we’ve done that with no Maguire, no Henderson and Kane coming off early. It’s a young squad so to have those two/three out of the team and still have the leadership and game management skills out on the pitch to see that result out was fantastic.

Scotland will be a different challenge than Croatia.

An evening game (so cooler) and a Scotland team with maybe fewer technicians than Croatia but plenty of energy and motivation. Would therefore expect a higher (or at least more sustained) tempo. They’ll do everything for a result and we need to have the same mindset. Frankly worried we might slip up.

Not sure there’s Too much negativity. Some said it was boring though

I'd like it if she now asked Mings "Do you think Sterling justified his selection"

Would be hilarious! Twitter would go into meltdown.

She was really struggling trying to come up with questions that weren't just completely obvious. I know pundits, presenters and interviewers have to be female or bame nowadays but they need to earn their stripes before they get the biggest games. It was like watching SMTV at times. Alex Scott is good, Jermain Jenus is good, Wright, Shearer, Lineker and lampard are good as they have all played at their highest level but some of the people they have in just waffle on about nothing.

Totally agree. Foden is a serious talent but after 10 minutes he was on the peripheral of the game as well, we needed someone to run at them and that person was not Rashford and I don't care how brilliant he is outside of football.

Bellingham added the energy missing, Rashford added nothing IMO. All in all job done and a better start then we have ever had but that papers over cracks. Fair play to Sterling for getting the goal and fora couple of decent runs early on but the game was fairly nostalgic and took me back to my childhood for a while, watching England play at an snails pace that is so alien to us whilst other teams do it so comfortably with our no1 flair player watching from the main stand.

So classy.

Personally I rate the new female/black commentators on football/cricket as being brilliant.
There are no bad female cricket commentators for sure. Most of the men and women in football are rubbish but then, there is so much of it on, nobody is going to be original.

Cricket have some excellent female broadcasters.

Isa Cuha is my favourite. Intelligent, has great cricketing and a great sense of humour.
Alison Mitchell lead the way I believe and has a true passion for game with excellent knowledge. She never played.
Ebony-Jewel Rainford-Brent (recently made an MBE) is fantastic role model and one of the best broadcaster in the game.

All three have been allowed to gain experience and added to my enjoyment of listening and watching cricket.

btw Alex Scott was excellent yesterday when asked about the Erikson situation. She is doing a great job in a difficult sport for Black Female acceptance.

I couldn't believe that question. One of the most stupid inane lacking in knowledge ridiculous questions I've ever heard asked of a player. FFS!

Is having played at the highest level a prerequisite for being a good pundit? Michael Owen has won the Ballon d'Or yet he's one of the worst around.

The best in the business were the former European football gang on BT, IMO, James Horncastle, Honigstein etc...all journalists and not players.

If you have ambitions of winning a competition you need to focus on that above putting on a show. And you need to be capable of going up a few gears in the later stages. So going gung ho in the first match against the WC runners up rather than patiently preventing them from having many/any scoring chances and getting what turned out to be a comfortable enough win is the right approach.

Superb at what exactly?! It surely can't be co-commentating!!

The sooner Shearer, Hinchcliffe, Souness and Savage are moved on, the better, in my opinion. They add nothing to the experience of watching football.

Not sure who the commentator was on 5 Live during the second half of the Denmark game, but she was brilliant at name-checking the Bees at every opportunity. Jensen never once got the ball; but "Brentford's Matthias Jensen" seemed to be heavily involved 😁

Shearer is a big headed egotist but I quite like the clichey mateyness of him, Lineker, Lampard, Rio for a tournament as they are all England fans. Bet the other 3 secretly hate Shearer but have never said it to each other.

I thought it was exactly the type of performance and result we needed for the first group game of a major international championship and one which we routinely fail to deliver. We were compact, organised, created half a dozen good chances and created a superb goal and saw the game out without a blip. You can't ask for more from the first game, the more dramatic higher tempo games will hopefully come later.

Problem with Shearer is, apart from his lack of real insight, he has the voice and enthusiasm of a man trying to remember what day to put the bins out.

Bad example as people get very animated about that decision, especially if you get the day wrong. I’m already dreading next years double bank holiday. ‘The Queens 70 year bin collection day confusion celebration’ I am calling it. ©

Sort of performance we needed. Takes a bit of pressure off the next two group games and we can play with a bit of freedom and confidence.
Great performance from Kalvin Phillips and from a Bees point of view, gives me the belief that Jensen, Da Silva could make the step up to the PL.
The only negative was Pickford's hair. It's like when you're allowed to go to the barbers for the first time and when they ask if it's ok, you say yes to be polite

To be fair, that matches nicely with my level of enthusiasm for international football.

it was a win and a wins a win but we need to be a lot lot better in round of 16 game....the next two will be no competition for us and i can see 2 or3nil in each.....but playing prob portugal....or germany in knockout is going to be a total change of philosophy,,,,,these next 2 games arent helpful for us at all and will lead to too much false hope of actually winning the comp (which we can do)......would like to see grealish in that midfield for the knockout game ;)

Sorry - but I really hate this attitude. Football is still (despite the money) a sport and an entertainment - for the fans at least.

*and I usually agree with our posts!
if we won 1-0 playing dull all the way through the tournament and actually won the thing you wouldnt get many complaints, if any ;)

:imwith: This! Yesterday was just about the perfect first game of a tournament performance! And, wow, how good was Kalvin Phillips!? :)

Really impressed with England. Tactics absolutely spot on.
Thought the midfield of Rice, Phillips and Mount were exceptional - Modric was almost non-existant because of them. Cannot see how Henderson can get back in as they are the perfect blend of defensive midfielder, playmaker and box to box (in Brentford terms Norgaard, Jensen and DaSilva).

I don't understand Southgate's love in for Walker

Also I don't think Kane is that great and wish he'd gone off earlier
