Back in 1947, Harry Curtis penned a series of articles which were printed in The Brentford and Chiswick Times. I obtained a scrapbook last year which had some cuttings from this series and WandererPaul just jogged my memory about it, so if I can manage to scan bits and pieces, I'll post them here to read. Some of the stories, eg "Bathgate" are common knowledge but there are some other quite interesting ones. I'll try and do what I can when I can as it was a broadsheet publication and the articles have been cut out and part stuck down

You should see about putting a book together. Thanks for sharing the articles.

Wasn't Rebus trying to put together a book on Harry Curtis?

Forgive me if I've got the wrong name.

Very interesting stuff!
Is there anything in these articles referring to Brentford players being selected to play for their country?
In those days, International matches often clashed with League fixtures , and club call ups could result in key players thus being unavailable for their club.
The daughter of one of our best players in that era told me that Harry Curtis once told the England selectors not to pick her father, as we badly needed him for a vital league match!
Sadly, the player never got an England cap, although he was often referred to as the best uncapped player in the country for his position...

Joe James?

England team was a 'closed shop' back on those days. It was about who you played for and how much the chairman of that club knew the selectors who selected the International XI.

Not sure how many more I'll post in this thread just in case other projects take off but will start another thread of other press stories etc at some point. However, this famous story and Harrys take on it, has to be mentioned. A bit patchy the way I've had to scan it but the only way possible

As often as not, the player wasn't available for his country.

I was reading the Harry Gregg story recently and he says how he was kept back by Man U from playing in a vital NI Qualifier for WC1958, because MU had a European Cup game coming up.

The daughter of one of our best players in that era told me that Harry Curtis once told the England selectors not to pick her father, as we badly needed him for a vital league match!

I'd guess it was more common that way round.

And being seen to "snub" England might indeed have ended his international career before it even started.

Another thing which sometimes held players back in those days was how they deported themselves on international duty. It was even so ridiculous that one player (can't remember who now) claimed the Blazers used to watch how you ate at the Official post-match Dinners etc - using the right cutlery etc!

And I'm pretty sure that Dagenham-born Alf Ramsey (incidentally of Romany stock), was so self-conscious about his humble background that he took elocution lessons, which accounted for his curious* style of speaking.

Hopefully this is the correct place to mention this, but how is the Harry Curtis book progressing?
