If we draw or win on Wednesday, I'd say that'd probably be the equal highest position since February 1947 when we dropped to 21st in Division 1 and stayed there.

Probably since we were relegated in May 1947.

Still, it’s only taken 74 years to get within 2 places of it!!!

Oh, hang on. Div 1 in 1946/47 had 22 teams in it.

Therefore, in theory, IF - jinxed it now - we go top on Wednesday, then we are, technically, 21st in the pyramid!!

So we match that relegation place!!

We were 2nd on at least one occasion before Xmas 1951 in the 1951/2 season in the old Division Two.

P.S. Just checked and we moved up to 2nd on October 27th 1951 and stayed there for the following two weeks.

We were also 2nd for a week or so a few games in. This is highest this late into the season for quite a while.

Someone questioned on saturday, IIRC on the match thread, if this was the quickest we've scored 50+ goals in the League? (Pld 27 F 52 on 6/2/2021)

The answer is no. There are at least 6 seasons - where I've checked quickly - where Brentford has scored 50 or more goals quicker.

The quickest, to my knowledge, was 1934/1935 - Pld 19 F 51 (on 15/12/1934).

The most recent, that I could find quickly, was in 1982/1983. Pld 23 F 50 (on 3/1/1983).

If anyone thinks there's a quicker more recent season or a better record, then find it!

Great thread. Thanks to everyone concerned. 1982/83... the great "what if?" season. If only Gary Roberts hadn't scored an injury-time equaliser away at Swindon in the FAC Cup 2nd round, then Toney Mahoney wouldn't have been playing in a replay three days later . He and Francis Joseph were scoring at better than a goal a game between them until then. And Kamara, Bowles and Roberts were all banging them in too. Shame we didn't bother defending. If only...

By way of next best - psychologically if not statistically - I offer you the 1991-92 season. Reaching 50 goals took 31 games (February 15th 1992), but it did put us where we belonged:

Did we make it to 2nd place in the league in 2014/15? If I recall correctly we were never top but would have gone top for a few hours on Boxing Day if we'd beaten Ipswich (we didn't). But it makes me think we were close enough that we could have been second around that time.

No. We stayed 3rd.

I think 2nd was best, due to goal difference.

I remember Sri I g back afterwards thinking we are going up - then all hell broke out the following week and we were Stroud-Ed against Watford.

Thanks, wanderer paul. You may be referring to me - I asked "Just wondering: today saw us score our 50th goal of the League season, in the 27th match. Have we reached that milestone faster, and if so, when? Possibly in 62-63 I guess, but I also seem to recall a free-scoring first half of the season in the 1980, maybe when we won or were runners-up in the Standard London Goals Challenge or whatever it was called.

That 1934-35 stat is amazing. I'd never have guessed that we'd have reached the 50 goals mark so quickly.

Strictly speaking after the first day 5-1 defeat of Rotherham in 18/19.

However if you want to look at a proper table it would be pre 1954.

We were 2nd for the first 38 minutes v Stoke (until they scored) and for 7 minutes in the final game of the season v Barnsley (between minute 34, when QPR went 1 up at WBA, and minute 41, when Barnsley went 1 up at GP.......)
Not that any of this is etched into my heart of course.......

Such a shame we went on a five game winless run after that Leeds game, we were in touching distance then!

Conversely after the Leeds game we were on 54 points after 32 played. We're currently on 54 points with 27 played. Good signs but now we just need one of our two main rivals to drop off...

That’s when my dad took me to Chelsea 1947 I was 9 74 years a supporter my school was in Brook Road

We started the day in 20th, but didn't have a game. Huddersfield played and won 3-0, dropping us into the relegation places... never to recover
