Peter Gelson scored a couple by literally belting the ball full on. The one you refer to was pretty spectacular as he got right under it and it must hold the world record for the highest. Needless to say that was the end of that experiment ! The widest miss for me was Clayton in an away game maybe at Scunthorpe or Donny it was nearer the corner flag than the goal :(

Jason Cousins put one in the Wendy House, and Barbet put one over it.

I think it was in a shootout rather than in a game but Leo Roget used to be the GPG go to on this subject until Barbet Vs QPR

His movement for the second goal. 20 goals already this season. Wow.
Quite brilliant. He fooled the defender, who thought Ivan was making a run towards the centre of the goal. Then as the cross came in, Ivan changes direction and gets in front and gets to the ball first and only one thing was going to happen then.

His attitude is brilliant, never gives up and always wants more. A leader and a goal scorer. Best striker we’ve ever had, well in my time anyway which is 25 years. I know a lot of people on here will be able to go back further but I just think the level we are at now, he’s the best and would do a job in the Prem. Hopefully next season.......with us 😬

Only 5 players have ever scored 30 or more goals in the Football League for Brentford FC

They are;

J Holliday 38 (32/33)
W Lane 33 (29/30)
S Phillips 32 (77/78)
J Towers 32 (58/59)
D McCulloch 31 (36/37)

Toney has a way to go yet but what a top 5!!

and, of these, only the great David McCulloch in the top two divisions?

Holliday 27 (33/34)
Holliday 25 (34/35)
Watkins 25 (2019/20)
Maupay 25 (2018/19)
Blissett 21 (92/93)
Toney 20 (2020/21) to date......

So, 19 goals needed in 20 games... I think the big man would back himself. No probs. 😎

What about Holdsworth, the season he got 37, fair percentage must have been in the league?

Movement for his goal was superb.

Checked his run then ghosted round the back of his man and got himself clear in front. At that point the finish was academic.

It's when he is at his best imo 👍

What a player, God forbid, If we don't get promotion this season he will be in very hot demand, as he has show his ability to make the step up with ease, how much will he go for? 30, 40,or even £50 million?, Who back in the dark days would have ever dreamt of mind boggling figures like that, hopefully it won't get to that stage 🤞

That would be the best thing about promotion.... we get to see Toney, Norgaard, Rico and JDS play for at least one more season...

i prefer to think about the fact that the England squad may legitimately have Watkins and Toney as two of our best strikers in the next year or two, which is just.... unbelievable!!

Really was a great run at the last second - I've felt there are times this season where he automatically pulls to the back for a header when really getting ahead of the man is the best option. You saw last night that when you connect with the ball from that area, it's a goal 9/10. Felt a bit more like something Watkins would do. Still waiting for a screamer, can't wait. Leading the line so well.

That’s wishful thinking

I was saying it with ollie last year too. Both gotta be in the top... 15? And if they keep going, who knows... Not saying it'll happen, but just imagine it, crazy, and not beyond the realms of possibility...

I think I'm in love with the guy. Last night's second goal is in my all-time top ten following us.

On top of that, imagine the quality of player the DOFs will be able to bring in if we have the added lure of the Premier League :sorted:

Bristol City head coach Dean Holden told BBC Radio Bristol:

"We got a bit too wide open.
Ivan Toney's not had a lot to feed off all night but it shows how clinical he is - he gets one chance and puts it away.

Ollie is top 10 now definitely - problem is the strikers playing for the big 6 will always be preferred so he would need to score 20 this season just to have a shot at a squad place

Scored more already than the Championship top scorer in 2008/9 - quite incredible when we have 20 games left and is on course to break the all-time record of 30 held by Glenn Murray

Ivan offers something from any other striker England have got including Kane. If he and we got to premier league can see him making England squad because he does offer different qualities that defenses are not used to these days. Almost like a Malcolm Macdonald

Watkins should make England just because he can play anywhere along the front 3. That is invaluable and should get him a place for the Euros IMO.

Toney is more traditional as a striker, and wouldn't get in yet if he was in Ollie's current position. Maybe in a couple of years but I'm a little more sceptical on that one.

I'm sorry, but am I missing something? By "Championship" do you mean since the renaming of the 2nd tier?

For unless you are, Murray's 30 goal season is nowhere near a record. A quick check for eg Brian Clough shows he scored 251 goals in 274 league starts, including with Boro in the (old) Second Division:
1956/57 - 38
1957/58 - 40
1958/59 - 43
1959/60 - 39
1960/61 - 34

Yes. I think that’s sky TVs take on it. Football before 1992 doesn’t exist in their stats....

This is the website you need. Top goal scorer in each division.

Looking at those stats, they even forget Guy Whittingham with 42 in 1992/93.
Their stats run from 2005!! 😂😂

It seems that the “record” for tier 2 is 59 (George Camsell Middlesbrough). Some way to go yet Mr Toney!!! 😂😂

Thanks, I only chose Cloughie as the first one to mind - I knew there had to be numerous others.

They had fewer teams in the league in those days too.
True, but as against that, strikers couldn't be substituted with, say, 20 minutes to go when already 3 goals up, nor brought on from the bench to nick a goal against a tiring opposition.

The stats for Goals per Minutes Played would be interesting (or at least Goals per Start). In that respect, Forss's figures are very impressive.

Absolutely.

And while Ivan is getting better with every game he plays, so is Kane. Worse, Ivan isn't that much younger than him: July 1993 vs March 1996
Enough to let Euro 24 be Kane’s swansong while Toney comes off the bench and cements his place through to the 2026 World Cup!

Possibly, but a lot of strikers rely on pace, meaning they tail off once they reach 30-odd.

Whereas Kane has never had great pace, so relies on other qualities (nous, preparation, hunger, professionalism etc )which may not deteriorate quite so quickly.

In that sense he's a bit like Robert Lewandowski, who's scoring better than ever despite turning 32 last August.
