Thanks for the reminder of Stan Webb.
Poor bloke was on a hiding to nothing; although that wasn’t the opinion I voiced at the time 😔

How will anyone ever fill Ivan’s boots but no doubt the DoF’s will weave their magic.
Donaldson
Gray
Hogan
Vibe
Maupay
Watkins
Toney
????
Frightening to think how good the next guy is going to be

Murray Jones, actually.

Ivan’s record breaking Championship season, now means that in 4 out of the last 6 Championship seasons, Brentford have had the top goal scorer -
So it’s Toney, Watkins, Maupay and Gray.

Plus in the top 15 Championship goal scorers of all time, Brentford have 4 players, with the nearest being 2 players each from Norwich and Leeds.

That’s quite some achievement for us!

It is, although I wonder how many times the top goalscorer in the Championship hasn't ended up being promoted that season? Suspect more often than to the club with the top goalscorer go up.

Yes, you’re right, and my ‘enthusiastic’ claim about having the top Championship goal scorers etc.. is wrong, although we’ve always been close during those previous seasons. So apologies for that.
I was looking at a football website, which obviously has the wrong data or was compiled by a Bees supporter!😂

Still, we have produced recently some great goal scorers, plus Ivan’s record!

In fact Toney is the first time we've had the top scorer in the league.

Mitrovic beat Watkins
Pukki got more than Maupay (29 vs 25)
Andre Gray got nowhere close (Daryl Murphy got 27, Gray got 16)

Any indication in the post match about his knock?

He links better with Bryan. Start them both on Sat.

Thought he was at his best defensively today. Had a good chance early on and heavy touch put it straight to the keeper. Kind of summed up his game up front. Didn't get much change from their CBs in general but linked much better with Mbeumo when he came on. I think we get suckered into playing it long to him too much and actually it's not that good for him either. We need to play it on the floor more, get it wide and get him in the box, that's where he's at his best...

I'd quite like to see some stats on goals from open play in the past 15-20 games for Ivan. Either defences have worked out how to frustrate him or he isn't as sharp as he was. 31 goals is a great achievement. But I don't see a £40m player recently.

Struggled going forward tonight. Can only assume his early knock contributed to that. Defended well but didn't find any space to work his magic. Hope he's fit for round 2.

He needs to focus more on being in the box, he’s currently spending too much time out of it. Few occasions last night the ball was worked around to swing a cross in and the crosser was him !!

I don’t think that’s all down to him, the team isn’t getting into the positions to get the ball into the box for him, and he’s been asked to help out more and more in that area. We’re also going long to him more often, don’t think it’s a coincidence his best scoring runs came when that wasn’t the case.

We really need to bring in some better wingers next year, to help create the space for him again to operate in.

Toney is a brilliant player, but I’d rather still have Watkins. If a bid of £20-25m+ came in I’d take it.

I don’t think the way we were set up yesterday helped him. We went too long too early and no-one was near enough to pick up on the second balls. There doesn’t seem to be much link up between him and Forss or Fosu just behind him. Sergi again was the only one providing any movement in and around the box and with Roerslev understandably going safety first it meant we weren’t getting balls into the box for him. Things improved a lot after the subs when suddenly you’ve got Sergi going past players on the right, henry on the left, Mbeumo a live wire and EM finding pockets and getting into the box. If we stick with the same starting line up we’re going to end up doing exactly the same as we did first half.

For someone who is so strong in the air, it disappoints me just how few crosses we're willing to get into the box. That being said, he isn't always in and around the penalty spot to be getting on the end of them anyway.

I would like to see us getting more crosses in, allow Toney a chance to bully some CB's; if he can link the play and drive into the box knowing a cross is likely I think we could see some positive results from it.

Has been a phenomonal player for us this season no doubt and I would be surpised if he lined up for us in August, whatever happens in the next couple of weeks. He's ambitious and will be looking to cash in while at his peak. That said, (and I know this is probably hyper critical) but by his standards has looked a bit lost in recent weeks, including last night. He got a knock but also seems to be playing deeper for more of the time and as others have alluded to, while goals from open play have not dried up, they are much less frequent than in the opening months of the season. Let's hope he is 100% firing on Saturday.

Having resigned myself since Christmas to the fact he'll be leaving us whatever happens this Summer, I'm now thinking he's going to stay.
In the current climate, I don't think anyone will match our valuation.........and we don't sell on the cheap these days......

I agree, don't see anyone of the lower-mid table PL clubs stumping up the money we would want for him. If we go up then he needs a season in the PL with us and prove or not if he's the real deal, then he'll go for 40+. He's done it at League one and the championship, the next level is something else ?

I can't see who would pay over £30M for him. Best match would be Palace but they have a massive rebuild over the summer and would not spend anywhere near that on 1 player (although I suspect they may try to come in for Pinnock and Norgaard).

whilst don’t necessarily disagree I think there will be some form of balancing act between us wanting max dollar and Ivan wanting a try at the highest possible level.

Even if the gods shine on us and we get promoted there will be a number of clubs willing to pay him silly money and we need to continue with our policy of showing we are a stepping stone to riches.

I get the feeling he's been carrying an injury for a while and that it was exacerbated by the knock he took yesterday. I wonder if he is mobile enough at the moment to play as a lone striker in a 4-3-3.

Of course he’s going irrespective of whether we go up or not. He’s at the very top of his value and that’s when we always sell.

What if the top of our valuation is £35M and we 'only' get bids of £20M??

Except that if we go up, Bees would need someone to replace him (obv), which won't be easy to find, even if it's affordable.

While from Ivan's pov, he might not want to go to another PL club just yet (emphasise) and not be a regular starter (see eg Said B), when he knows he would be at Brentford.

He’s at the very top of his value and that’s when we always sell.
I'd say ten or a dozen PL goals for Bees next season would easily add £10-12m to his transfer value (see eg Ollie Watkins) and attract offers from bigger clubs than those who might buy him now.

We wouldn’t take the chance. If our valuation is met then he’ll go.

In normal circumstances yes, every single time.

But with the "safety net" of even one season's PL income, maybe the club might calculate that it's worth taking that chance? That is, set his value in helping us survive in the PL against the risk of injury etc, which would reduce, even eliminate, his present worth?

At the very least, promotion would surely raise his present valuation by another £5-10m.

If the valuation is met it’ll be up to Ivan. If we go up he may commit to staying and if so I doubt the club will entertain any offers even if they’re mooted at around our valuation.

If Spurs get something north of £100m for Kane, then I wouldn't be at all surprised if £30m+ of it was reinvested in Ivan.

Unless, of course, we get promoted... :sorted:
More likely to replace Watkins at Villa when he moves to Spurs. Double bubble for us.

Hadn't thought of that.

But Ollie would command £10-15m(?) more than Ivan and while I rate him very highly, I actually think Ivan is his equal.

Also, Ollie may get a "bigger" club than Spurs, while Levy is likely to go for the cheaper option, esp if he thinks it offers better value, "pound for pound".

But you may be right.

I think if Ivan is hoping of a move to Spurs or another top 6/7 team he will need to deliver in the next game and ideally be able to drive us to promotion with a couple of big performances. The big clubs will be watching to see how he performs in the big games when under pressure as that is vital in the PL.

Said not really showing up in the last five games of the season is possibly the reasons why some of the big clubs who were apparently interested in him did not come through.
