Sorry cant help but good luck. Should be a number of retail jobs about this time of year if you wanted to stay in that area. I used to and have actually known quite a few Directors and other successful people in the industry who started as Xmas temps. Not the securest of industries at the moment so do look at it as short term or do your research into companies. Eg. Maybe not Argos.

Royal Mail are always looking for casual workers at Christmas.

Try http://www.royalmail.com/jobs

There is a big sorting office at Langley which deals with all the overseas mail.

Can I add my own request to this thread? We moved to the Isle of Wight recently and I am coming back to London Monday to Friday to earn a crust at the moment - just spending Saturday and Sunday at home. This was always the plan until I could find work on the island, but I've underestimated two things. First, just how short work is over there and also, I had no idea how hard and what a wrench it was going to be working here, staying with friends and not being able to go home to the family after a twelve hour shift .

So, if anybody is in a position of influence with a company that has a presence on the island and you think you can help me out, you might just make me the happiest bunny that I've been for many a year.

There is one GPGer trying to kick a bit of ass with his company on my behalf. He is a top bloke of whom I think the world and I am eternally grateful for his efforts. If anybody else can join in - please do! I will take anything from cleaning lavatories, serving burgers, driving vans, making tea, full time or part time - for a farthing a day if neccessary just to get a foothold. Despite my sillyness on the GPG, most that know me will tell you that I'm actually a sensible fellow with a great work ethic.

There is only one job I would not do and unfortunately it's the only one so far that has offered an opening - Traffic Warden lol. I am not prepared to walk around ruining people's holidays. But I'll take on anything else .

Traffic warden it's about the improving traffic flow not the people. Remember that and getting ticketing

The desire to be a Traffic Warden should, in itself, be enough to prevent a person from being allowed to be one. Now does anyone want any bogs cleaning or wheelie bins emptying? :suspect:

With the holiday season coming up try hotels, holiday camps and catering establishments (pubs) - once you get a foot in the door you could probably get something permanent.
Red Funnel Ferries are looking for stores assistant in Southampton but I am sure you would be able to commute to and from the island for free or little money if you get a job with them.

Tried Red Funnel for various vacancies. Hoping to hear from them but nothing so far (also tried Wightlink). You apply for those jobs online initially and receive an email to the effect of, "Due to the high volume of applications you might never here from us again. If you don't, it's because we're not offering you a job". :( Maybe one day.

Trouble with the holiday industry is the rut I find myself in at the moment. I'm struggling to pay the bills and working Monday to Friday in London on a self employed basis. If I applied for a dozen jobs and was offered half a dozen interviews on different days, I'd have £100 travelling expenses for each interview and no income that day. That's the pickle I'm in .

There might be a bit of light at the end of the tunnel - I really hope so. I've worked in the cab industry for the past 13 years and I decided to make a big list of phone numbers of cab companies on the island and start calling them. There are about 40 in all, but I soon found that most of them are one man operators. However, I did by chance call what turns out to be a larger organisation and said I was calling on the off chance that they might be in need of office staff. The timing seems to have been perfect because the lady said that although the company is family run, she had been discussing hiring some help with her husband the night before! She discussed my call with her husband and called me back the next day inviting me to go and see them tomorrow - say a prayer for me GPGers!

Also, another GPGer had been in touch to say that he has a couple of possible leads for me. He's just back from holiday so I shall call him later today. :sorted:

If there are any Freight Forwarding, 3PL, Logistics companies out there looking for some independent consulting on IT Systems - selection, evaluation, implementation - or more detailed aspects, like creating new 'products'. pricing, air or ocean freight connectivity, air cargo security procedures... you get the drift, please contact me. Also, if said companies are looking for anyone to write up customer case studies, website extended text or the like. I have experience in many of the systems around, all modes and in many of the countries of the world (even Russian Rail) and have worked on IS and organisational projects for most of the Top 20 logistics companies and many retailers.

Hi vcmazz. I work for greentomato cars in brentford, we have a fleet of over 300 cars and we are recruiting for telephonists and co-ordinators. However, if you wish to work closer to the isle of wight, you could also try Aquacars who are based in portsmouth. Good luck, what ever you decide.

Website stuff is a hobby - I'm not qualified at anything. Re- cab driving, that's what I'm doing in London at the moment as I have the London Private Hire Licence. I have an application pack for the IOW licence and my plan is to go for that anyway because whatever I end up doing it is handy to have as a back up. But it will take a few months to learn the knowledge and another few months to get my licence processed so it's a long term possibility as opposed to an immediate one unfortunately.

Thanks mate - Aquacars sounds interesting. Are they part of the same group?

No mate they are totally seperate to us (we are part of transdev and recently took over Trident Niven) but i have heard Aquacars are the biggest operator on the south coast. You should also read private hire magazine as it has alot of job adverts and news for many companies across the country and not just london. Good luck.

I will have a chat with IslandBee but he is a Cowes Sports fan :spit: where as I am East Cowes Vics. It would be rather much like asking a QPR supporter to help you :D.

He knows I don't mean that - he's a top bloke ;). I will indeed drop him a line and in the meantime please all hold hands and pray at lunchtime tomorrow. I'm not allowing myself to get carried away but it might, just MIGHT, be the break I'm looking for (see post 18). :sorted:

Ah Niven. My brother used to work for him. Had the BBC contract sorted out if I remember. A very interesting character too
