Brentford have completed the signing of Ecuadorian winger César Joel Valencia Castillo for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old completed a medical in West London late yesterday, Tuesday 30 July, and officially joined The Bees today, subject to international clearance. Joel Valencia – as he is best known – joined Brentford from Gliwicki Klub Sportowy Piast Gliwice, the current champions of Poland, and has signed a four-year contract.

Joel spent the past two years with Piast Gliwice and, last season, helped them win the national title for the first time. His performances in a variety of attacking midfield roles earned him the Polish Player of the Year award. He scored six goals in 33 games last term, contributing a similar number of assists.

Like the bit about 'incredibly quick feet' and 'superb one on one attackiing' !!

Ladies and gentlemen we have hit peak Brentford. A short, technical player from an unfashionable country and a league no one else would think to look in. Welcome Joel!

Welcome aboard Joel.

With a name that long, if he gets booked and the ref asks his full name there will be plenty of time added on for stoppages.

If what Banana says about outgoings is true I think I am about to get proper excited about this season

Exactly what we needed. Someone who'll beat a man and create space for all the other talented players we have. Transfer window just keeps getting better and better.

I like a player with quick feet. Hope he settles well. His Spanish upbringing may give Sergi a pal too

In that little interview, he comes across as a very well-grounded person.

Welcome aboard the good ship Brentford, Joel!

I've seen several games of Piast Gliwice last season and I can say that...actually no I am lying, I don't know much about him. I usually base how good a signing is on how they fill in the sentence of 'We are _______ to have him at the club.' Rasmus went with 'pleased', which is a 'happy but not overwhelmed' sort of response. They describe his skills very well though, so in my opinion he'll be one who can offer exciting traits but they may require bedding in to settle in properly. Fortunately it does add more depth to an area where realistically we need it (a true promotion pushing squad needs this depth in case of injuries etc). So hopefully will be interesting.

Cue many Bees fans scrabbling around to come up with a song for him delighted when they realise they can rhyme "Joel" with "Goal"...

The chorus of the Christmas carol The First Noel may provide a framework. Using your suggested rhyme (?):

Jo-el, Jo-el
Jo-el, Jo-el
Give him the ball and he'll score a go-el

Go-el? There must be a better last line.

Welcome.. First Ecuadorian to ever play for the Bees??
I think that's a reasonable assumption!

I was wondering if he was the first South American, but there was someone on loan from Everton a few seasons back. And both Maupay and Marcondes have one South American parent.

The Beesotted Video clip is not the best but it does show Joel is not upset talking heavy tackles

From the few clips there are on YouTube he reminds me a bit of Pritchard.

What an impressive interview. Also, already match fit as he's played three European games and a Polish League game this month.

Statement from Joel Valencia:

“Its an honour to sign for the team I’ve supported since I was a kid. Growing up in Ecuador, I used to follow Brentford religiously. I had a Charlie MacDonald shirt on my bedroom wall.”

Great to see we are HIS club

If that was on twitter, I'd take that with a pinch of salt...
